Iron Storm - NY59Giants (A) vs 1EyedJacks (J)

Post by 1EyedJacks »

This is a joint forum between NY59Giants (AKA ADM Benoit) and 1EyedJacks (AKA Cap'n Jack) in an alternative history Mod that Alikchi came up with.

Soooooooo - turn 1 starts out with a bang and some interesting numbers for me.

I hit PH but did not get the results I wanted. I did nail down a BC - The Constitution but I really wanted a few BBs and the Carrier Lexington (that my superior imperial japanese spy network had dug up information on).

Some of my Transport TFs failed to get INF Divisions to their proper locations for invasion... That must be on me as I'm still learning the subtle "tricks" to a proper turn 1.

What was cool was watching all of the AKs running from Hong Kong - I pounced on some of those. Anyway - there are a lot of cool toyz to play with and from the last couple of e-mails it appears that ADM Benoit is licking his chops.

Talk about heavy flack - this sucked! But they did some butt-kicking with 30Kg GPs. The slightly over 2/3rds pilots that made it back were extatic over catching the ships at half mast - so to speak, but were totally bummed over the losses to their squadron.

Captain Ionatsu of the CL Jintsu weilds his Imperial Task Force like a katana, sweeping thru the Hai Lee with quick, brisk strokes. The Jintsu plants a big fish into the Hai Lee's flank; blood, smoke, and fire are the results of the torpedo; Ionatsu's first kill!

The TF closes to 1200 yrds - point blank range. Even the 3 inch guns of the Jintsu poor death into the steel flanks of the Chekiang... Captain Ionatsu doesn't bother with the survivors.

Ionatsu's TF spots smoke on the horizon and charge towards the tell-tale signiture like sharks on the scent of blood... Haraldsvang is already heavily damaged from an earlier air attack - there's little honor to be had in sinking this ship - it's already a wreck - any fool can see it will shortly sink on it's own... A sharp-eyed sailor points towards the horizon; again the TF is on the hunt!

AK Soochow, Shell hits 3, and is sunk

Barely managing to stay above the lapping waves, the Soochow is put out of its misery. Ionatsu has the cooks come up on deck and let off a few rounds in order to better cross-train his men for when they meet a real opponent. Again the sharp-eyed sailor spots sign of an enemy vessel! Captain Ionatsu lets loose his dawgs of war - the hunt is on!

The TF pumps rounds into the Halldor, clearing the fore deck of it's piddly gun in a hail of scouring fire. Surely the gods of war sing praise and toast saki in honor of Captain Ionatsu and his might Jintsu!

RE: Iron Storm - NY59Giants (A) vs 1EyedJacks (J)

Post by ny59giants »

The Imperialist Aggressor has attacked the peace loving people throughout the Pacific and will pay dearly for these foolish acts.[:D]
We decided on a non-histrorical 1st turn, so I went around the map and changed CAP levels from 10k up to high teen's and into the 20's, which seemed to help and set LB's from 15k down below 10k to help in the anti-shipping role. I re-routed some TF's with large capital ships to try to save them.
The bad news is the Japanese have 2 CV's, 2 CVL's, 8 BB's, & 8 CA's at CamRanh along with 2 BB's and 2 CA's at Palau. I will counter with what I have - some British CV/CVL and BB/BC to slow down the "rice eaters." Plus, he will "love" to see BBB again (Big Bad Boise). [:D] [&o] [:D]
It will be interesting to see if he has learned how to use his subs around Hawaii - previous PBEM went until 1/16/42 and he lost 7 plus subs off of Hawaii [:D][X(][:D]

More smack to follow. [:-]

Things 2 ponder:

- Oscars are not 2 bad in this mod - @ least not against the current allied aircaft deployed in Malaya/Philippines

- This is my 2nd game of Iron Storm II. Both times now I've used a fairly conservative Surprise turn on the 7th. Michael could maybe share more from his end but in my other game Darren tells me he really has some tough supply problems starting out. I'm gunna have a tougher road to got in Malaya/PI with the additional troops the allies have. I will most likely have to use a heavy does of air support with additional troops sent to Malaya to offset allied assets in Malaya and the PI.

- In China I'll probably pull as many Manchuko troops as I can and spend the political points to use them. I'll try to use China as my training theatre for air units. The China campaign will probably need to be a brute force method of assault as the forts are going to be tough to overcome...

- I have some sweet carrier strength - carrier raiding will most likely be necessary to keep ADM Benoit hamstrung in the supply department.

- I'm loading up on cheap kills from merchies running from Hong Kong but this won't last. In truth, the more I can smoke, the less chance he will have of pulling supplies B4 I can capture bases.

TTFN,

Mike

So a BB goes down @ PH this turn, the runway looks like swiss chese, and Guam falls. Mop up action continues from the Hong Kong Excedus. Some of my troops seem to be traveling slooooowly - 3-7 miles per day. It's hard to assault the allies when your troops are dragging their heels...

RE: Iron Storm - NY59Giants (A) vs 1EyedJacks (J)

Post by ny59giants »

The Allies have lost their second BB/BC at Pearl with the sinking of the Nevada. [:(] I have three more BB's at 99 sys along with the Lexington. They will probably all go down after the next attack. [:(]
Thus, I will have only two CV's in the East Pacific for a while, but not too long.[;)]
I have a few British CV/CVL's running around SRA/DEI with Sea Hurricanes along with Dutch, Australian, and New Zealand BC's to keep him honest. I feel him going after those lone AK/TK running away from Hong Kong will be a mistake, as I was able to do other things with his CV/CVL's busy.
He did not land on Malaya on turn one and I was able to make adjustments in LBA disposition to make anything without sufficient CAP potentially dangerous. [;)] I have two Spitfire squadrons at Singapore with a replacement rate of 50 per month, so I will not be running out of those soon. [:D][:D]
His last two attacks by Zero and Nell at Singapore have turned out well for me. The last attack saw the lost of 11 Nell and 1 Zero to my Spit's and Beaufighter IC's and the previous saw 11 Zero and 9 Nell. Plus, his number of Nell's went from 105 down to 43 with the losses and high damages and I have lost only 1 Spit pilot per attack (plus Beaufighters being higher). [:-]
AK/TK's are headed to supply sources to start building up bases and get LBA up to full strenght.
More to follow!!

Victoria Point, Tavoy, and Tarawa were expected... I would really like to C the forts dropping hard @ Hong Kong Tho (plus I'd like to kick those Chinese troops outta Yangku and send them packin' [:D]

So @ PH ADM Benoits BBs and CV are not sinking fast enough for me. @ Singora my troops are not moving fast enough for me. In the PI things are still getting "sorted out." Not a bad turn - not a good turn - just a turn.

I'm kinda delaying sending Michael my turn to see if anyone has an answer to the slooooooow movement issue I'm having w/troops. If I don't see answers I can use shortly then I'll be sending the turn off for Michael to do his thing.

One game related question regarding the extended map - what is realistic or fair regarding subs and the "maze of gray" over by Panama? I was thinking I should keep my subs no more then 3-5 hexes from the mouth of the maze to give his AKs a "reasonable" chance... Any good house rules on the extended map that people would like to share?

you might wanna ask your opponent to fly either 6k or below, or 10 k and above, because the Flak gap at 7, 8, 9 k is a "bug" so to speak, ie a design flaw...

I am not sure if 6k is inside or outside this flak gap thing, but 8k sure is...

So places where I've been trying to attack my troops are sluffing it. So I give them no orders this turn so I can get them to get a move-on next turn? Strange things going in Malaya/PI...

It was cool to see all of those torpedo misses by ADM Benoit's subs - we kinda had a thing going in the last game where he was pasting my subs near PH. Blowing rasberries @ him right now works 4 me - lol. He calls me Hero-san in our e-mails. He's funny - he makes me laff[:D][:D]

So is there really a flakless window in this game - or is that just a boat-load? I've read around a bit but I don't C any moderators confirming this...

Oh well - I gotta turn from WALKERD, my other PBEM oponnent. Talking smack is fun but I think I'd rather play a turn - [:D]

With the war only one week old, I cannot do much excpet runaway to fight another day. [:@]
However, I will tell all that the "Old Lady of the Sea" - CV Lex is still afloat in Pearl with unpublish sys damage, but float is only at "1." How, I don't know, but more hits doesn't seem to raise it. [X(]

He has his 2 CV's (each with 81 planes - 27Z,27V,27K) and 2CVL's (each with 36 planes - 18Z,18K) steaming of the North coast of Borneo. Where he goes with them is subject to debate - strike at Singapore and risk one of my torpedo carrying Beauforts to put a CV back in the shipyard [:D] or head down the Java Sea and give my Dutch planes targets. He doesn't know where my British AC TF is with 2 CV's and 1 CVL are located. Plus, I have 5 BB's and 5 BC's in or around the SRA to slow him down.

As the Allies I get 100 B-25C's per month and their range of 6 and 8 will help in a few months along with the early P-38"s to give me some offensive punch beyond 5 hex extended range of some fighters. Right now not much is going on for me.

1EyedJack - Where are all those subs?? My stockpile of DC's is growing and my ASW DD's need some target practice...[:D][:D]

That was very fortunate to not get one of my ships torpedoed NE of Borneo. Very lucky.

I'm having problems moving troops from 1 hex to another - not just slow moves - they can't go from one hex to the next to attack allied troops - it's a control issue.

So like, my TF is crusin' down the Java Sea, ya know, enjoyin' da sun and fishin' and looken' for them British CVs. I mean, ya know, if the Brit and Dutch pilots can't hit my TF with a CAP of 10 and like, ya know, their gunna talk trash and stuff, well then, bring it on! [:D][:D][:D]

Yes, my British CV/CVL's have not been close enough to go toe-to-toe with his 4 CV/CVL's at this point in the war off of Java. He has the Zero bonus in full force, higher experienced pilots, better planes (Jap vs. Dutch), and my unit morale is still recovering from their low start from the beginning of the war. Time is on my side and I will delay when possible and run when I feel it is the wiser strategy. [;)]

It seems he has left Pearl after one week of bombing it back to the stone ages. [:(] Aircraft damage was high, but most of my planes where "stand down" after the first day as airfield was closed down and the most a squadron could put up was 2 planes. He divided his forces to have the Vals keep the airfields closed and used the Kates to attack the port and "TRY" to sink the "Lucky Lex" The amount of sys damage remains classified (this is joint AAR after all), but it seemed to not take on float damage to sink it. It stayed around 0 or 1 even after repeated attacks. He did sink 1 BC and 2 BB's. Not bad considering he spent a week there.[:D]

Low damaged ships with enough speed have been sent back to the WC for repairs on divergent routes to avoid any subs (which seem to be nowhere [&:]). LCU's and planes on the WC are filling out and will be loaded on AK/AP for transport to various points in PTO.

The SRA/DEI has him in control of northern Luzon and just getting across the border into Malaya. No seaborn invasion of Malaya. [8|] I do not know if it will hamper his conquest, but I will not look this gift horse in the mouth. [:D]

Mainly, it is getting AK/AP/TK to places that I can get supplies moved forward, troops and planes moved, and evacuate what I want (or can). Build up forts in rear areas to make the conquest costly.

"Patience is a virtue" - but for an Allied player, not following this spells disaster for the first 6 months at least.

Paratroopers, 2 Rgts... I haven't really played with 'troopers B4... Hmmm, what can I mess with next[&:][&:]

Unfortunately, ADM Benoit is having pretty severe computer problems with WITP and has withdrawn from this game. It's too bad as I think we wer both having fun with this mod.
