No Hamburger hills?

Post by hakan »

Ok, I love the game... But... I noticed yesterday that there were no topographic lines in the game. Why? That’s one of the most important information when you are planning a defense (Hey, I have been an ranger, teaching how to make the life ugly for advancing soviet infantry, T-72 and MTLB etc. :-)

In this game you may click on LOS, but why not also add normal topographic lines?

I believe contour lines are now on the wishlist.

Personally I find the height colour coding fine.. the contours are where the colours meet! [:)]

What he said...there are topographical lines in that the colours specify the change. I know what you mean, so I'm not being pedantic...you can distinguish elevation is what I mean, albeit not in the same sense as "topographical" maps

Oh, ok! Usually different colour symbolizes different terrain, not difference in altitude. Well, you learn something new every day!!! (I compete in Orienteering - or whatever the sport might be called in English - that’s why I misinterpreted the maps.)

Still... Wouldn’t it be nice to plan the defence of Lower Village using a map looking like this: [:)]

Anyway... It was just a rookie comment. I will adopt.

Some of our source maps were basically printed in brown on white paper.... that was about it. [:)]

Yes...I think they would look nice...and agree. I was just letting you know that the colours differentiate the levels and so it is "kind of" in the game.

I'll second the contours thingy, though.

PS It is called orienteering in the UK also. [:D]

you might ck out the map graphic mod I did w some screen shots.......

tm.asp?m=1175059

the closer zooms really make the brown shades 'show' the contours better to my semi-old eyes [;)] and I cked on a map and the the darker shades denote a 40 meter change in elevation.

That map does look good hakan! [:)]

One of the things I love about CotA is that it's maps look similar to the map you posted. It feels like they are begging you to look at them and strategise (is that a proper word?!)

But, yeah.. definately I wouldn't complain if future maps ended up looking like that.

The French (which topo maps are great) also have a coloured layers for their 100,000 scaled topo map. So CotA doesn't actually deviates from standard practices.

Really? Did you use the original German maps from the war, when making the game? Gosh... You guys must have the most interesting job there is... How the hell did you get those maps??

I acually saw a documentary on Discovery some years ago, where a fallschirmjaeger, who participated in the Crete operation, acually complained about the maps. (The same thing happended for the US paratroopers fighting in Grenada 1983; the poor bastards had only tourist maps without topographic lines, making it almost impossible to use indirect fire. :-)

I have been playing all night... Very interesting game!

But now my wife is really upset ... I just accepted to visit Rome, just to keep her happy... :-/

Actually we used a variety of different map sources. Where possible we relied on the Brit GSGS maps, which in turn were based on original pre-war Greek maps updated by aerial survey in 1940/1. But even so some are woeful when it comes to terrain details. We have access here to the Australian National Library, which has a top rate map room and they digitise the maps for us for a fee.
