No.. reinforcements are not available!

Post by *Lava* »

Hi!

Since you all are going to be doing another major revision to TOAW, perhaps you can address the casuality results screen.

As it is now, equipment is listed as "available" if they are in inventory. That's okay, but not very helpful since almost everytime you look at the screen "reinforcements are (always) available."

I think it would be a lot more functional and informational, if reinforcement availability was based not just on inventory but on supply status as well.

Thus, a unit that has been encircled or has it's supply lines cut, for example, should show "reinforcements are not available."

It's a small thing, and perhaps requires too much time for the benefit, but it would be great feedback to the player that he has indeed isolated the unit in question.

thats already in the game, a unit is either 'supplied', so receives supplies and new equipment from the on-hand pool, or is 'unsupplied', than it won't receive supply or equipment. The equipment listing only shows whether that type of equipment is generally available, once the unit reestablishes a supplied status [:)]

Then it is of no use.

Which is my point. Make it useful.

Hmmm? Why isn't is usefull? In unsupplied status every equipment would otherwise read 'not available', so would yield you no new information, as you already know that from the general 'unsupplied' status.
On the other hand with the current begavior you'll get the addition information which equipment is generally available to replenish your losses, whether this unit will get these reinforcements is again easily visibly by observing the supplied/unsupplied status.

I fail to see how your proposed changes would give the player any new informations?

Ah, I think you want to know the availability of replacements for the _enemy_ unit in combat result dialog?

Fog of War, you are not supposed to know that ;) Even a fully encirceled enemy unit can be supplied, as long as they are able to fly in supplies by plane for example, so simply crush them ASAP, just in case ;)

And as for your own units, just look up the unit informations for it's supplied/unsupplied status, or enable the full supply display.

Well..

Indeed, on an operational level you shouldn't have any idea whether or not the enemy has reinforcements of any certain type of equipment. So on that level the statement that "reinforcements are available" should not be shown.

But my point is, that it ALWAYS says "reinforcements are available" which means either 1) it is a function that does not work or 2) says absolutely nothing about the situation even if it is working and thus provides no information.

So why have it?

Granted even an encircled enemy can still get some supply, but operationally it is insignificant and I believe it is not modeled in TOAW.

The only logic that would serve would be for the function to be tied to the units ability to resupply itself with needed personnel and equipment.

To be precise, it NEVER says that. It sometimes says "Replacements are available." It sometimes says "No replacements are available." Sometimes, as shown in the picture below, it has a nice mix of the two...[;)]

Pre-1950... that simply was not the case. With few exceptions, encircled troops are cut off from communications and supply. At Stalingrad, even the Luftwaffe was unable to fully supply by air.

This assumption is based on complete air supremacy, while ground troops are surrounded, and further assumes that there is adequate transports to haul supply.

We supplied several divisions by air for extended periods of time on more than one occasion during the first half of 1944 in Burma. Substantial reinforcements were even airlifted in to the pocket at Imphal.

This information isn't tremendously useful, though. I think that's the realy problem. "Replacements are available" might mean there's 1 squad in replacements but your forces are 10,000 short of TO&E.

Like I said, "with few exceptions" it was just not logistically possible.

Well...

Guess it depends on the senario, but I don't really check the screen very much because it offers no real information to the player.

Now this OTH would be far more effective and informative:

I wouldn't go that far. I check it in perhaps half of combats to get a glimpse at what losses were like for the two sides in detail. I usually only glance at it, but sometimes I take a detailed look, to see how losses break down between the major types. The report is particularly useful for air losses.
Now this OTH would be far more effective and informative:

Thinking along the right sort of lines. I'm not sure if I agree with the exact information you've put in the view, but something like this would be good. The overview of the contents of the hex I do definitely like. Perhaps one could even get a before/after snapshot. Obviously this is only useful if the hex is "spotted", and wouldn't work for the attacker losses dialogue. Perhaps in that case, one could just add additional columns as on the replacements report currently (on hand, rate and total lost so far).
