Night-time concealment?

Post by Alexander Seil »

Is the enemy AI genuinely in the dark about your positions at night? I'm observing a rather peculiar thing right now - an enemy armored company is literally 30-50 meters away from an entire battalion, which actually partially surrounds it. My troops aren't firing and are dug in. Is it safe to assume that the AI thinks there's no one there?

Some things to keep in mind:

(1) Differential sighting is implemented in the game (meaning visibility need not be symmetric).

(2) There is enemy FOW. So, just how reliable is that contact report which you have?

---

If you really want to be sure of the situation for both sides, then save the game at that point. After you are done with the game, reload the save and surrender at that point. Thus, you will lift FOW and know for sure what was what.

Well, it was a real report and I later confirmed that it was an armored company (by 6:06am they surrendered behind my lines). Can the game generate actual fake reports, or is a reported unit always a unit and not just someone's imagination or a herd of sheep?

No fake report AFAIK. A reported unit is a unit. It's size, equipment, even nationality are not very acurate though. And depending on your settings, you can have very old sightings on map. You can display all, recent or only current reports. I usually only display recent report. Some are too old to be reliable.

At the start of scenario, initial contact reports can, if the scenario designer chooses, be completely bogus.

Can u explain these terms? I'm not sure whether I understand those english terms.........

Differential sighting....as in: Player Unit A reporting about the appearance of a tank squadron at a certain distance, while player unit B tends to think that it's a mechanized Coy, screening from a different location, for example?

Symmetric visibility: As in reports having the SAME level of accuracy for friend and foe, corresponding to the distance?

Ahhh, just tried to move up to the first post by holding the right mouse button...I shouldn't play COTA that much [:-][:D][;)]

That explained the sighting perfectly, but I still fail to understand the term "symmetric", in the context above.

My use of the term is as an opposite to that of differential. If sighting is symmetric, then if I can see you, you can see me. In the original use, I was being redundant in the hope that those reading what I wrote would understand one expression or the other.

Dammit, never mind, it's my german brain that got messed up. Also, it was meant the other way round, symmetric did make sense to me, but differential didn't....it was a typo....I gotcha now, though.
