Supply suggestion...

Post by captskillet »

this may have been already covered but here goes anyway..........I think to add the final touch of realism to the supply model (for patches and future games) is the addition of assigning a supply 'level' to each command ala the old V4V/World at War series.... I know its already abstracted to a point with the ROF setting but me thinks a commander in planning a battle would allocate more supplies (thereby allowing said units to rapid ROF longer) to unit that is going to attacking than a unit in a defensive posture, but the real kicker is how much is available to distribute........you may want to attack but is there enough stuff to supply (if it gets thru [;)]) I guess the ROF's would then be available for certain period of time based upon suplly level or not at all (no rapid ROF if you are on defensive or minimal supply, reduced somewhat for general and maybe not wide open but close for assault level.

Am I talking poop here or is there merit to be found???? [;)]

I think the hooks for high-level player involvement in the supply chain were incorporated as part of the design. So, the potential is there for such evolution. If and when, that is another matter.

A similar discussion popped up in one of the supply threads, if I remember correctly. I expressed my wish for "some" control over supply assignments, but it had been degraded/disposed by other users (devs too?, can't remember), replies pretty much like "..I'm happy with the current blahblah...", and "no need for creating more 'paperwork' for the player, by adding enhanced supply-management, as it would be processed by CO stuff anyways." Kinda like that.

Wellllllll...........A General would issue orders to

a) attack/defend in certain regions, he would priorize targets and the allocation of reinforcements, but he would also

b) assert on his right to assign vital supplies, in order to ensure that the most important troops (e.g. the first line of a thrust) would get the best supplies (first). Rear guard units would'n get shyte, initially, IMHO.

So, I really want an enhanced supply system that reflects this behaviour, as it adds to the realism in this game (for the next title BFTB, at least).

It would be nice to be able to allocate supplies. Maybe there could be a supply tab for the HQ's that listed what supplies were being requested for the next supply run with some up/down toggles to amend the figures. It could lead to some mayhem if the player over-used supplies but that could be half the fun.

Imagine getting cut off from your SEP - there is only enough art ammo left for one unit - which one gets it? Or do you send a small portion to all of them? It could be interesting!

lol, if the conversation gets around to 'too much supply floating around - convoys have too much capacity and airstrikes are too effective' then I will be seriously getting deja vous! [:D]

I actually toyed with providing a supply "priority" setting to each of the player's orders. But I backed away from it mainly because it involved a lot more work. I agree it would be a nice touch for those budding "loggers" out there. But again it's a question of time and developement priority. Do we do this or some other feature ( like a resupply pathing tool [:)] ). I'll add it back in, but it won't be a priority right now.
