CHS 2.05 + Nik Mod - Jagdfluger (J) v. AdmSpruance (A)

Post by Jagdfluger »

The scenario: 157 -- CHS 2.05, AB extended map 6.2, Nik Mod, patched to 1.801.

AdmSpruance and I have been waiting a long time to start this game. He is approximately 12-0 as the Allies and I am 8-0 as the Japanese. We waited until CHS upgraded to 2.05, so we are anxious to get started. Thanks to AdmSpruance for playing me and for the CHS team, especially Andrew Brown and Nik, for all their hard work making this game better.

We have a long list of house rules that I will have to post later, as I am currently on vacation and on my laptop.

Starting options are:

Historic first turn, historic set up, historic reinforcements, Dec 7 surprise on, Both sub doctrines OFF, PDUs ON (with some restrictions in the house rules), Allied damage control ON, Advanced weather ON, Auto sub ops OFF.

The opening (historic turn) was a little sub par for the Japanese:

PH strike only landed 4 torpedo hits with no BBs sunk.

Wake Island invasion repulsed with heavy casualties (0 to 1 odds).

Total of 158 allied aircraft destroyed vs. 47 Japanese.

Still, Japanese elated over decisive defeat of the Allied fleet at Pearl Harbor. Initial Japanese landings in northern Luzon are unopposed. Troops rapidly move inland to consolidate their gains.

I had about the same results as you. [8D] Allies lost 175 aircraft to my 45. [X(]. Scored about 6 torpedo hits. I think Tennessee will sink soon. She had 2 /3 fish in her.  Wake fell and some strange ocean sighseeing in and around HK [:D][:'(].

Lucky for you, tonight it's just me

Is this the NikMod with the AAA enhancements? The aircraft losses look about double what one normally might see.

12/8/42

Repeat attack on PH yield 42 Kates and Vals shot down by flak - only 11 aircraft destroyed on the ground and BB California sunk.

Everything else uneventful, except that all aircraft around PIs attacked one ML sitting in Hong Kong harbor.  The worst was when 60 Bettys and Nells attacked it after it was already sunk.  It was a single ship TF as well.  Could this be a mod bug?

I don't think that has anything to do with the mod.

Thanks for checking our AAR Andrew. It is obvious you have done a lot of work changing the CHS OOB from 1.6 to 2.05.

AdmSpruance reports that his transports cannot drop off or pick up troops.  He has some other problems as well, such as not being able to ferry planes by selecting the base on the drop down list (he has to select it on the map).

AdmSpruance also pointed out that my second attack on PH had 4 out of 5 Kate squadrons dropping torpedoes, but 18 bomb hits (and no torpedo hits) registered.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-9-42

CENTRAL PACIFIC:

Pearl Harbor is rebuilding after getting hit hard by KB for 2 days in a row. BB California was sunk off Ford Island and CA NewOrleans was sunk while trying to escape.

KB is nowparked about 420 mi NE of Pearl Harbor to prevent any ships from escaping back to the US.

KB lost 32 Kates and 13 Vals in the Dec. 8th attack on Pearl. Overall Japanese losses were 56 AC to 26 Allied AC yesterday.

The brave Marines hold out at Wake and Japan is forced to withdraw.

A Japanese invasion force is spotted approximately 120 mi N of Kavieng.

MALAYA:

Japan invades at Khota Bharu but hasnt attacked yet.

Singora was opened up as a forward Japanese airbase and the RAF hit it with 50 bombers the last 2 days.

PI:

Japan captures Batan, Aparri, Tuegagaro and Vigan but an apparant paradrop was repulsed at Naga. Other paratroops land at Puerto Princessa and Taytay and capture the airfields there.

ERRATA:

Ive dled AB map 6.2 and we are using CHS 2.05 but the hex at 21,53 is still a Ls hex and Ive got 2 TFs trapped there.

So far Ive not been able to transfer carrier capable airgroups from a land base to a CV(and there is plenty of room on the CV).

Im having problems with transfering fragments of air groups...I have to click on the base on the map and Im not allowed to pick a destination from the transfer box. When a fragment does transfer and joins its parent group I get the following screenshot:

It sounds like you have a problem with the map data file. Does the map data match the map when you use the 'F6' key and the '1' key?

I checked my map with the F6 key and it shows hex 21,53 to have 4 blue and 2 green hexsides. Calcutta is a Cu hex and and I have the RR running inland from Sawahloento.

Still, I had 2 TFs that the game sent from Palembang to Singapore get stuck in 21,53 and the fuel remaining was marked in red with a 5 digit number. I had to reroute both TFs to the SE to escape hex 21,53.

You do have the right map data then.

I have tested hex 21,53 a few times now and I have never had a problem moving TFs out of that hex. But the map data should be changed there, and maybe a few other coastal swamp hexes, to make it more "correct", so I will be updating my map packages very soon.

SITUATION REPORT: 12-11-42

The speed of Jagdfluger's advance through the PI and SRA is nothing short of breathtaking considering that we used the historical 1st turn. I can only assume that he is making maximum use of his fast transport capablity and his paratroops.

In his first attempt at CHS Jagfluger overran the PI, SRA, Malaya and _AUSTRALIA_ by March 1942. Australia represents the largest concentration of Allied LCUs outside of China.....6 divisions and 6 brigades. If you cant hold Australia then you surely cant hold India, New Caledonia, New Zealand or Pearl Harbor against a determined Japanese assault in early 1942. Obviously there is nothing in the Allied land arsenal that will stop the Japanese juggernaut so the only way to defend Oz and India is a good up front defense in Malaya, PI and the SRA. The Allies here in this game will take calculated risks(and losses) in shipping, LCUs and and aircraft to attempt to slow down the Japanese expansion.

Curiously, in all my previous campaign games Ive held the USN CVs back until summer 1942 so they could upgrade before facing the "Black Hole" of the KBs CAP. Here we are playing with the Nik mod so there is an opportunity for the Allies to create a "Super Midway" if they can mass enough land and carrier air at the point of attack. The Allied ground OOB cant stop Jagdfluger in early 1942 but fortunately all the areas of conquest require control of the sea lanes....so it will be up to the CVs to save the Allies in early 1942.

MALAYA:

The IJA landed at Khota Bharu on 12/7/42 but so far there has been no major assault...Jagdfluger may be just pinning my troops down so that they cant be used in the defense of Singapore. There appears to be 1 division at Singora and one division at Khota Bharu but no sign of the Imperial Guards SS Panzer Division at this time. Ive attempted to pull SEAC and Dutch LCUs out of Rangoon and Sumatra to reinforce the critical bases in the SRA but the Nells and Bettys have been taking a heavy toll on Allied shipping.

PI:

Japan captures Tuegagaro and Lamon Bay.

Mindanao is heavily defended now in CHS but the the strategic situation has changed as the only Betty bases (Level 4) are Clark, Manila, Cayagan and and Jolo. The strategic significance of Jolo now is HUGE in CHS but now there is no base force there....100 paratroopers could easily take it. An emergency Allied transport TF is ordered to reinforce Jolo and arrives just as Japanese surface TFs approach on 12/10/42.

Force Z begins the war split up with BB PoW in port at Singapore and BC Repulse 60 miles offshore. Both groups are ordered south at full speed to rendezvous at Kendari. The sudden appearance of Japanese TFs south of Luzon forces the Royal Navy to divert to the north and attack piecemeal....the BB PoW Battlegroup with CA Houston is ordered to Jolo to intercept IJN invasion forces. Other IJN surface TFs are running down Allied shipping in the Sulu Sea and the Straits of Makassar so the BC Repulse Battlegroup is ordered to intercept offshore Borneo just north of Samarinda. Several IJN DDs are sunk in the 2 engagements and the Japanese troops on Jolo are heavily bombarded.

DEI:

A Japanese invasion force invades at Amboina...with over 10,000 troops landed it appoears to be a major Japanese objective so they can base Bettys there.

Japanese BBs and assault transports are spotted in the South China Sea heading for Kuching. IMHO Kuching is critical to the Allied defense of Palembang and Singapore so at great cost of Allied AKs an Aussie brigade was pulled out of Malaya to reinforce Kuching. With Force Z south of Borneo there is nothing to stop the IJN BBs. A group of Dutch PT boats and the RN CL Dragon are ordered to Kuching to protect the AKs offloading the Aussie troops...they must protect them at any cost...."They Were Expendable". Vildebeests are staged into Singkawang to help cover Kuching.

Japan captures Miri.

SOUTH PACIFIC:

Japanese transports land assault troops at Kavieng while IJN surface ships sweep the seas offshore at Rabaul. Nells pound Allied AKs attempting to pull troops out of Kavieng to reinforce Rabaul.

CENTAL PACIFIC:

After 2 major attacks on Pearl Harbor the KB appears to be withdrawing towards the Marshalls. The USN loses BB California and BB Maryland in the attacks and CA New Orleans was sunk attempting to flee from Pearl Harbor. All quiet at Wake after the Marines heroically repel the Japanese assault(read lucky die roll).

Here is a screenshot of the action in the southern PI and the DEI:

Troops continue to pour towards Singapore.  Commonwealth forces are in full retreat.

But Wake Island continues to hold out against the entire South Seas force and a full tank regiment:

Here is the general situation:

Central Pacific

The Japanese Navy successfully captured Johnson Island yesterday.  The U.S. Forces were caught completely by surprise.  Over 70 diver bombers and torpedoes bombers did not have time to fly back to Pearl Harbor and were destroyed by their crews.

South Pacific

The Japanese have captures Tulagi and Shortlands, but are still engaged with a small Austrlain force at Rabaul.  Fortifications are being systematically destroyed and capture of the strategic base is only a matter of time.

SRA

The capture of Kuching and Jolo Island has establsihed Japanese air supremacy around Borneo.  Palembang and Java are under threat.  Ambonia has also been captured.  A blockade has been established around the Phillipines.  From Kuching, Jolo, (soon Cagayan), and Ambonia, transports heading to Manilla will not likely survive.

PI

Japanese troops are 60 miles from Clark Airfield.  Bad roads have made the march to Manilla from northern Luzon a slow ordeal.

Malaysia

Commonwealth forces are no longer defending major bases in northern Malaysia.  The Japanese have captured Georgetown, Alor Star and Khota Baru, all lvl 4 airfield or higher.  Taiping will soon fall.  General Yamishita, already being called the "Tiger of Malay" by the press, estimates that the brave Japanese troops will continue to see only the backs of Commonwealth forces until they reach Singapore itself.

China

Now without Mongolian calvary divisions to free up garrison forces for active service, the war in China is already a stalemate.  In the extreme north, some Chinese units have gotten themselves in a small quadry.  It remains to be seen whether the Japanese have enough forces to achieve an encirclement.
