In secret negotiations with the USA and for a substantial military and economic aid package, Israel agreed to disable Iran's nuclear research and processing facilities. The USA promised to assist covertly with ECM support and, if absolutely required, a long range surgical strike.

Somehow Iran managed to get hold of this information and readied all available assets. In addition, Iran alerted her only friend in the Arab region: Israel's neighbor Syria.
