our task force continues to still move in a square in the ocean -waiting, and looking
Our commander still apparently believes that the allied fleet must come back to the Indian front, we will wait for a while longer
To increase pressure, our battle wagons are going to attack Tricomalee -good luck Brother -use your great guns well.
We are told today that our planes continue to strike Akyab island, and an invasion fleet is soon to load -the british fleet certaintly cannot interfere now!
We hear also of "brave herioc resistance at Tulgia"
and "effective" air strikes at Lunga.
But once again the war seems to be so far away.
At least the weather is improving.

yet another day of stooging around the ocean
Life has become very routine.
The ship goes to Dawn action stations at 0400, we pilots make our way to the ready room -and are given our assignments for the day.
Some 6 kates are spotted, and 6 Vals are spotted as well.
These are launched at around 4 30 -to be well out as the sun comes up.
dawn arrives suddenly here near the equator, at around 5.30, and one can watch the 1st seaplanes take off on search
The ship stands down for breakfast at 6, and we settle into the routine
We are flying about half our fighters on CAP - funny how what once terrified me has quickly become the norm -a CV landing though is still nothing to laugh at.
CAP duty has been delightful -for the 2 days I have scored it I have revelled in the pleasure of flying.
Many big thunderclouds develop in the afternoon -these one has to avoid -yet also check carefully -they could easily hide 10000 planes .
But the skys and sea remain frustratingly empty.
But all the signs are that we may be out here a long, long time - today at the extreme range of my CAP I saw our tanker fleet - and the battle line.
The war grinds on - in the solomons the allies are bombing away -no sign of there fleet -and bangkok was raided by long range bombers today.
The admiral again addressed the fleet today - he still believes the British must return to Tricomalee at some stage, he is going to be very patient.
I suspect he wants to force their hand -Tokyo rose has begun to taught the troops on Akyab - promising -"A storm of destruction is coming to you poor isolated abandoned troops".
moral remains high -we have had little luck in coming to grips with the enemy, surely this must change soon.

Tokyo rose speaks of continued resistance
High command obviously is now not going to fight for the solomons.
Another long day of flying cAP over endless ocean, still no sign of the british -or any body else for that matter.
I go to bed tired, yet happy.
We can out wit the enemy yet.

The morning is heralded with the blast of trumpets.
We eagerly gather around the speakers, men pause at their meals, the ship await the announcement
"Today units of the imperial fleet delivered a heavy naval bombardment to the key British base of trimcomalee -surprise was total, and the enemy retaliation only inflicted minor damage to a heavy cruiser.
Our navy also bombarded Akyab yet again, that is all"
An excited buzz flows through the ship.
We still can fight back.
Butterflies in my belly.
Are we really on the edge of something very, very big?
I do not fly today, glad for the rest.
Spend much time on the bridge wing - everyone loves to watch the action from there
despite the again bad weather -we have not lost anyone to ops this week -a good feeling.
One can feel the crew -despite the heavy work -gaining in moral as well, as we get more and more efficient doing what we do - flying from the sea.

very little news today
Rumours of our battlewagons being bombed south of Trimcomalee.
Actually the rumour mill is going over time, some say an actual invasion of Trimcomalee is in the wings -with the british fleet no longer in the picture ?
But who knows?
For us, its another day of low speed stooging, and waiting, and waiting.
Where are the British?

I am no sailor, but even I can tell when ships are being driven hard, the rust is in great streaks on their fat hulls.
We will refuel tomorrow
Our ships hit Adaman island again today.
Still no sign of the enemy.
Little news on the war today - the enemy continues to bomb in certain areas , and China seems to have gone quiet.
Who has the greatest patience -We are sure the British are aware that we are operating in the Indian Ocean -radio intercepts from Allied SS today reporting our Vals on Patrol near Adaman.
We remain undetected though.
its hard not to grow restless out here in the endless wastes.

The enemy Battle ships south of gassmatta are reported heavily attacked today -the Army is claiming several hits on a BB, but I severly doubt if anything a Sally can carry can hurt one.

So much faith placed in these torpedoe bombers before the war, so dissapointing now.
Other than the POW and repulse, its been a long time since we sunk a capital ship with one
Today the fleet turned sharply east, and we sail that way at a good clip.
Reports of many dakatos shot down by Junyos zeros in the last 2 days.
More rumours -some one heard the Admiral exclaim "#$#@! it!, lets go home" a mere 5 minutes before we changed course.
Appears that once again we have been out smarted by the cunning Kiwi Admiral.
This war is rapidly going to hell.

I'm playing wobbly also, and he's a sly one - that's for sure.
I don't know how he does it - but I never can seem to detect his ships before they strike.

A deep feeling of depression falls over the fleet.
The mighty operation has been cancelled.
Once again the Kiwi Admiral has slipped the net.
Our CV heads due east, back to singapore.
Even the prospect of some shore time fails to rouse our spirits.
Tokyo rose reports Sag,Sag naval bombarded today -the americans crawl slowly up the Solomon chain..

We count the cost of this failed Indian ocean sweep/ thrust/ fishing exped
Down south at least 20 AKs sunk, and 5 air groups savaged as we were out stepped by the Kiwi
Here, 3 Aos lost, 2 Bbs now with heavy system damage, and vast quantities of fuel and supplies expended.

The fleet sails south back down the straight towards Singapore
We are in radio range of many stations, and it has been interesting to catch up on the rest of the war.
Tokyo rose tells of "heavy reinforcements" enroute to Burma, we debate what this means, probably the dispatch of several divisions.
In China there is a report of very, very large fighter sweeps by the allies, involving P38s, the twin tail devils.
The allies report that in Burma as well large numbers of them are in operation there.
I can remember that only 4 months ago our Tonies seemed to be in the same position, what has happened to them?, have they gone into reserve, are they defending our vital areas.
Or, disturbingly, have they simply been shattered?
The solomons are fairly quiet, we do not seem to be fighting very hard at all there.
For myself, one really should not get too depressed over the failure of this mission -its not our fualt, we did our duty.
Maybe next time.
