In French there is no rule about which word will be female and which will be male (there i no "it").

As for ships, carriers, battleships, cruisers, DD, DE, PC, AO, TK, AP, AK, LST, SS, CS, DM, DMS, MSW will be HE.
PG, PT, barges will be SHE.

You just have to know...

There are no sexes in hungarian for items (or even for persons he/she is the same word, only it is different) or for absolutely anything. We dont differentiate between 'male' or 'female' words. So if someone would call his ship 'she/he', that person would be treated as not mentally healthy or at least overpassionate over an object. IIRC it is the same in finnish.

So you have two gender, a neutrum (IT) and a non neutrum (HE/SHE)?

Even more simple. Õ which means a third person (living excluding animals and plants, basically used only referring to persons or maximum for pets or creatures with a soul), ez/az meaning it or this/that (everything not included before). So someone to suppose his ship to have a soul means very-very deep connection. In hungarian What is it? What is this/that? is the same Mi ez/az?
Oh BTW we use is/are only in special cases. LOL. According to the grammar when you speak of something you automatically suppose its existence. Not to mention we 'stick' letters to the root of words instead of putting them in a specil order. IIRC fiaiéi is world recorder word having 5 vowels in a row (it means things which belong things owned by his/her sons). [:D]

Strange language.[;)]

Strangely enough, the noun for ship in russian (КОРАБЛЬ) is masculine, but has a traditional feminine ending (a soft sign). Another word for ship (СУДНО) is neuter. Go figure...

Here's the traditional answer...

WHY IS A SHIP CALLED "SHE"?

A ship is called "she" because,

There is always a great deal of bustle around her;

There is usually a gang of men around her;

She has a waist and stays;

Her rigging cost's more than her hull;

It takes a lot of paint to keep her looking good;

It is not the initial expense that breaks you,

It’s the upkeep;

She can be all decked out;

It takes an experienced man to handle her correctly;

And without a man at the helm,

She is absolutely uncontrollable;

She has her topsides, hides her bottom and,

When coming into port,

She always heads for the buoys.

fair winds,

Finnish is doesn't have he/she difference either...same language group than Hungarian.

BTW, when Bismarck sailed first time her captain said they should call her male since nothing as powerful cannot be woman... Well, we know how that maiden voyage ended...

Kinda reminds me of that sci-fi movie Species...:

Quote from movie:

Xavier Fitch: We decided to make it female so it would be more docile and controllable.
Preston Lennox: More docile and controllable, eh? You guys don't get out much.

That's exactly what I have always understood about why we refer to a ship as a SHE,
In English we don't generally have masculine and feminine nouns as some languages do. But a ship is called "she" because of sailors affection for her...not because of language structure.[;)]

Maybe I am wrong.

I seem to recall: In English, we refer to our own ship as "she", but an active enemy ship as "he".

"He's turning to port. Reset the TDC..."

Am I correct?

Not sure who the "he" refers to here - the ship or the enemy skipper. i had always assumed it was the latter.

In Romanian the generic name it's a she (nava/nave). The various ship classes can be feminine (fregata/fregate) or neuter - masculine for singular, feminine for plural (distrugator/distrugatoare).
