p.s. although I personally would not agree to a house rule in Karachi thats neither here nor there as I have nothing to do with your game.

I would point out that the Urban bonus goes both ways. i.e. even if you dont take the city if the allies attack you you also gain the urban bonus as it is independent of the base.

2 or 3 prepped Japanese Divisions backed by an HQ or 2 could probably bottle up the allies there for a long long time allowing you to redeploy now.

4x on defence will be hard to overcome plus the ofrts your units build.

The harder part will be that at some stage you will find it hard to keep the AF shut which means paras and a naval assault to your rear once the allies regain air superiority probably sometime in 43

I would consider just cutting your losses leave 3 or 4 Divisions and a few small garrison bns for rear areas and go take the next objective

Harlock,

You are correct that the situation isn't entirely one-sided. After all it is a war ;). My engine production is being increased to cope with the increase in fighter and bomber production I've recently ordered. Essentially I am producing approximately double the number of fighters and almost double the number of bombers as I was two months ago and since my transport and recon flights are no longer taking place as extensively over as long a range their losses have fallen also.

I think I'm in fairly good shape as regards the engine production with my pools increasing rather than decreasing and with the vast majority of my squadrons now in training and no longer in active combat I think I can develop a sufficiently large, skilled, pilot corps to hit the Allies extremely hard once more. I think the time for such an offensive would be October to November 1942 at Hawaii.

Once that offensive is completed it is true that my air force would probably be incapable of a further massive offensive for another 6 months ( 3 months for disbanded squadrons to return plus 3 months for them to train their pilots to 80+ experience) but it won't be asked to undertake any really major air offensives during that time period and should have enough to operate an essentially defensive force. This would allow me another major offensive pulse in April to May 43 ( Australia) and another one in October/November 43 ( the Soviet Union). After that no further offensive pulses will be remotely possible and all effort will have to be focussed on defending in strength. This will segue nicely with my planned conversion to a kamikaze-based defence in 1944.

Andy Mac,
I hadn't thought of them as transfers from other theatres. That makes a lot of sense. Thanks for that. When viewed in that light the situation isn't, necessarily, a bug. I do, however, wish the manual was a bit clearer on these things so one wouldn't have to guesstimate everything and assign reason to seeming chaos when reason could be provided by a clear, simple, online design document listing what the game mechanisms are and why they were created as they were.

Anyways, thanks for that input on that.

As far as Trey using the Soviet Union for basing and rebuilding aircraft ( he's doing a lot more than just transferring them through in 1 or 2 days. They are resident on a few airfields there). It isn't a violation of newtonian physics or a clear exploitation of a broken game mechanism ( which are the two thresholds we agreed to) so while I might question it a little I'm happy to let it continue. To be fair though one of my reasons for this is that I WANT him to base four-engined bombers into Bombay so I my Zero CAP, army bombers and bombardment TFs can destroy them before they can make their escape.

In short, I have a counter to this strategy and intend to use it to hurt the Allied cause. I have NO counter at all to teleporting units and supplies which is why I am so exercised about it. Anything which can be countered is, IMO, allowed but something which cannot be countered is, at best, questionable in my opinion.

Well, there you go. Two more submarines, three merchants and a minesweeper are sunk with this bombardment run in addition to over 11,000 support troops killed or wounded. If I assume 15,000 support troops for every division there, 5,000 for every Brigade and 2,500 per Base Force/Engineer/Artillery Unit etc ( some have more, many less) and assume Trey has 5 divisions, 5 Brigades and 30some support units ( about a dozen artillery units and the rest being engineering or base force units or HQs) then I come up with a figure of, roughly, 175,000 support troops. That is the equivalent of about 15 bombardments of this ferocity. So, it seems that if I CAN keep this ferocity up it is possible that I could reach a tipping point ( at about 100,000 support troops) where the casualties inflicted per bombardment run cannot be repaired by the time the next bombardment run commences. With support units unable to fully repair themselves by the next bombardment run and support for his combat units in the red I could start making significant inroads into his actual combat strength with each attack.

That's about my only hope of taking Karachi before the mass teleportation of US troops commences ( which I consider to be against the spirit of our rules since the teleportation of ground units into besieged cities without any chance of interception is clearly at odds with newtonian physics... which was one of the only two measures against which our rules were to be measured) in mid-July. I've been discussing this with Trey and the most he is willing to offer is a ceasefire in place until the end of 1943 at which time offensive operations from Karachi can recommence. Of course this means that two months before then he will have changed HQs on massive numbers of ground formations and set them all to transfer into Karachi. I must admit though that since I think the teleportation is a quite flagrant breach of the newtonian physics standar we both agreed on that I am VERY disappointed that Trey won't agree, almost to the level of it causing some real hard feeling. I can see it costing him position etc but, then again, I've never complained when he's launched 100 four-engined bombers anywhere and that has certainly cost me position.

What do people here think? is that a good deal or not? I really think that in the absence of these completely hosed teleportation dynamics Karachi WOULD fall and so it galls me to let it get away but, by the same token, I may not have the strength to take it. A full-scale ground attack CAN bring the fort level down but even with forts reduced to nothing the enemy defensive strength is on the order of 6,000 adjusted AV while my deliberate attack strength would be somewhere between 5,000 and 6,000. So, if he has insufficient support points and this renders many of his combat disablements incapable of being repaired prior to the next combat maybe Karachi COULD be taken?

I'm really at sea here and would appreciate any advice.

Where the game dynamics don't intervene and create a virtually impregnable fortress with Star Trek-like abilities to replace men and materiel I continue to do well. 3 more DMS are removed from the enemy order of battle and mines hit several heavier vessels. Little damage is caused since these are only Type 4 mines.

So, 16,000 support troop casualties in 2 days. I'm going to fiddle with the phasing of my BB TFs to try to get 3 BB TFs each making a run every 5 days so that, in essence, Karachi is bombarded by a medium-sized TF every 2nd night. With each of these smaller raids probably inflicting on the order of 5,000 casualties that should mean the inflicting of 15,000 casualties to support troops every 5 days. Can that many support squads be repaired over the next 5 days whilst at the same time keeping pace with the 1,000 to 2000 combat disablements which will occur every 5 days ( from the middle of the month I'm going to try to tie my ground assaults into this same 5 day schedule). Not that it will probably make much of a difference given the obviously hosed game mechanism which the powers that be seem to have not the slightest interest in fixing. Way to go guys [8|][8|][8|]

The 3 CVEs I had operating out of Noumea sprinted northward once I realised the British were fully evacuating Karachi. Since they didn't have to deal with some stupid, short-sighted game dynamic giving the escaping British shipping force fields or something similar they do, over the next few days, do a good job of culling the transport numbers somewhat.

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 06/07/42

Today was marked by the concrete realisation of the concept that not only is the teleportation of men and supplies into Karachi while it is completely besieged by overwhelming land, air and naval forces viewed as realistic but so is the flying in of hundreds of heavy bombers from neutral countries which, in reality, were bending over backward to avoid starting a war with the Japanese. he didn't even move the bombers to the US to rebuild. He just rebuilt his B17 and LB30 squadrons in Irkutsk... undoubtedly relying on the plentiful supply of spare B17 and LB30 parts the Soviets had built for their many squadrons of these bombers... oh wait... *Sigh*

I've been expecting something like this and made sure I always had at least one bombardment TF within 1 day's sail of Karachi. Tomorrow these bomber squadrons are the targets. I'm quite peeved that Trey is, to my mind, flouting the newtonian physics standard so destroying a couple of hundred heavy bombers will cheer me up endlessly.

Between them these bombardments removed over 26,000 Allied support troops, 150 guns of varying types, sank the Cromarty and, most gratifying of all, brought the number of four-engined bombers destroyed over the last two days to exactly 100. Almost two months worth of B-17E production was destroyed in these two days and a similar toll taken of LB-30 replacements.

I'll also be invading Washington Island in the next couple of days with an infantry regiment. it is, essentially, unescorted and unsupported but since the defending forces mass only a base force, an engineer force and an artillery unit ( based on my previous ground attacks) I think it should be enough. I have a convoy coming to replace the losses I expect to take in the initial landings in case I need to land a 2nd regiment from palmyra. My basic plan is to land at Washington Island, suffer massive disruption and then wait for a couple of weeks while I make good my disabled squads and get ready to attack the Allied defenders.

RE: 6 Months In: How much longer can Japan run rampant?

Post by Andy Mac »

Nemo I enjoy your AAR and understanding the rules you are playing under but even so I would suggest you take the deal and free up the troops for other ops. If your opponent really wants to try and kick you out of an urban hex let him try.

He will manage it eventually but it will cost him and as for transferring troops to Karachi if he has to use PP's per unit and not say transfer an HQ so he gets the ground units for free (which is an exploit) let him it will cost him lots of PP's and I doubt it will do him any good.

(ok now the bit you may feel free to ignore as I only saying this because you commented on possible bad feeling but I dont think your opponent is wrong to decline your offers and actually a ceasefire is about all I would be willing to offer in his place. I know we disagree on this point so I wont labour the point but who says you have the city besieged ? The only reason you have air superioty is because the 50 AF's to the north of Karachi are not represented in the game and the reinforcements that would have poured into the area to stop the threat to the oil fileds are not represented (would the Torch Landings have occured in this scenario I would assume the Br 1st Army and possibly even the US 3rd Corps would have been diverted) so your TF's can close Karachi's AF at will at the map edge this is not the end of the world it just happens to be the end of game map that also is not newtonian physiscs IMO)

Re Russia I would be pretty hacked off about your opponent using the Russian airbases in that way.

[quote]ORIGINAL: Nemo121

I'm developing another 4 training bases with the possibility of adding another one later in order to maximise the efficiency of my training programme. So far the training is going well. Many of my carrier attack squadrons have experience in the 90s, most of the Zeros and Nates have experience in the 80s and, overall, it looks like I'm going to be able to field an awful lot of 90 Experience fighter squadrons by August in time for the conversion of my Nates and Oscars to Tojos and Tonys.

Ground combat at Karachi

Japanese Shock attack

Attacking force 228412 troops, 2437 guns, 915 vehicles, Assault Value = 4820

Defending force 116507 troops, 1053 guns, 208 vehicles, Assault Value = 2291

Japanese engineers reduce fortifications to 8

Japanese max assault: 4987 - adjusted assault: 3258

Allied max defense: 2242 - adjusted defense: 19341

Japanese assault odds: 0 to 1 (fort level 8)

Japanese ground losses:
3964 casualties reported
Guns lost 103
Vehicles lost 40

Allied ground losses:
771 casualties reported
Guns lost 48
Vehicles lost 1

According to my calculations even with NO forts the units in Karachi ( if receiving no reinforcements) will muster an AV of over 7000. I can gather a maximum of 6,000 AV in the hex. That's still within striking range if my bombardments CAN whittle enemy support levels down into the red.

So, given this is the opinion still the same? Is Karachi not possible?

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Chungking

Japanese Bombardment attack

Attacking force 165459 troops, 2113 guns, 11 vehicles, Assault Value = 3416

Defending force 7880 troops, 39 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 79

Japanese ground losses:
7 casualties reported

Allied ground losses:
11 casualties reported
Guns lost 14

--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Ground combat at Ogliuga Island

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 600 troops, 14 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 36

Defending force 0 troops, 0 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 0

Allied max assault: 31 - adjusted assault: 32

Japanese max defense: 0 - adjusted defense: 1

Allied assault odds: 32 to 1 (fort level 0)

Allied forces CAPTURE Ogliuga Island base !!!

RE: When Star Trek meets WWII

Nemo, I have been reading your AAR from the beginning. My understanding was that this was a no holds barred type of affair. When you made your first turn teleport move, there were many negative posts made. But you explained the rules that you and Trey were going by, and that was good enough for me. I believe that I even posted in support of you at the time, and urged you to keep going.

Your entire aproach seems to be to use many gamey tactics to put yourself in a very strong, extremely unhistoric position from which to defend when the allies get very strong later in the game. By gamey tactics, I mean teleporting into the DEI, bypassing Singapor, and then quickly moving on India before adequite defeders arrived. You have also made mention of plans, once India was taken, to then take these forces en masse and work around the map edge and basically try to take out Australia, NZ, the south pacific, and even Pearl.

Since both you and your opponnent agreed that this was ok at start, I don't see anything wrong with this at all. In fact it looks like the makings of a very FUN game. But I also thought that the " realism" defence went out the window on turn 1. I thought that you guys made the right decision when the dreaded shock-persuit model reared it's ugly head. That was defenitely broken and needed a house rule.

But I have to say that I am surprised by your hard feelings over the Karachi situation. I don't think that units teleporting into a beseiged town is "realistic", but using the map edge as a mile high brick wall to shield your flank while you mass your troops elsewhere isn't any better. I don't think that moving bombers to russia for r&r is realistic, but the fact that you are anywhere near Karachi isn't realistic anyway so what's the difference?

I understand your frustration about your timetable being set back, but I don't think that there is anything broken or FUBARed about this aspect of the game ( exept for the first turn jap teleport).

Oops, hit the post button before I was finished. In any case, I hope that you keep on with your AAR, and find it within yourself too accept the situation at Karachi as reasonable if not realistic. You had to know that there would be a fly in the ointment sooner or later. I wish that I could post more in depth but I must run. Looking forward to your reply. Umm, I haven't done that anywhere. Hell I've proposed to trey giving him safe passage along map edges to Australia/US and India no matter what I take... Of course that offer is now off the table as far as I'm concerned.

bypassing Singapor, and then quickly moving on India before adequite defeders arrived.

Gamey? BS. Bypassing areas which are no longer a threat is just good strategy and keeping up the offensive momentum is also just good strategy. I don't agree there is anything gamey in doing something which makes strategic sense. By your logic all manoeuvrist warfare is "gamey" yet it is the doctrine the American army and especially marine corps promulgate.

to then take these forces en masse and work around the map edge and basically try to take out Australia, NZ, the south pacific, and even Pearl.

The South pacific and Pearl are an age away from the map edges. To represent taking them as a map-edge exploit thing is disingenuous.

Redd,
Ok so later on in the game when the Americans are, for example, invading Tinian you would be happy with Japanese forces in Tinian receiving 15,000 tons of supply per turn and being able to teleport in multiple divisions using teleporters yes? I would appreciate you answering this question as it is directly analogous to the situation at Karachi. If that were allowed America and Japan would still be at war today.

As to the 1st turn "teleport"... Nah it isn't even close to equivalent to this situation. The 1st turn bonus moves ARE susceptible to interception ( if only after Day 1) and do simply represent ships sailing at dates prior to December 7th 1941. What we have at Karachi is hordes of American divisions teleporting in from San Francisco with NO possibility of interception whatsoever. That ships left port early and sailed for various ports conforms to newtonian physics. There is even precedent for them not being attacked as they neared their targets and were spotted in the British and American refusal to honour their treaty with the Dutch when the Dutch called for a declaraion of war against Japan when troops convoys passed a certain longtitude on December 4th. Teleportation of units from one side of the world to the other without use of shipping etc doesn't conform to newtonian physics.

but the fact that you are anywhere near Karachi isn't realistic anyway so what's the difference?
Says who? I used the in-game assets available to me and managed to get to karachi fair and square fighting every inch of the way. Lots of others have tried and failed so that shows it isn't easy etc...

Hell you know what, it simply isn't worth the hassle. Allied fanboys are everywhere and everything which benefits the Allies or hurts the Japanese is fine. When I began playing this game I thought the fanboys on both sides were as bad as eachother. Over time, however, I've seen Allied Fanboys shoot down every single call for removing absurdities which benefit the Allies time and again with nothing more than "well you shouldn't be there anyways" or something similar. Whatever. All I do by arguing for the same rules to apply to both sides is to increase my blood pressure. There's no community or programmer interest in addressing these issues.

Well, it looks like we're going to have to take the deal at Karachi. it would appear that the US Northern Pacific HQ is about to arrive in Karachi and with it will arrive many, many US units at zero PP cost. I've limited my training programme to using only the programme-envisioned number of on-map planes. With the conduct at Karachi that restraint is now a thing of the past. I'm going to try to triple my training programme over the next two months. I see no need for self-imposed limits if I'm facing Star Trek.
