RE: Disaster at Tinian - Halsey Court Martialled
Would you consider downgrading some of your reserve squadrons ( or squadrons in quieter sectors) to previous versions of the Corsair ( youmay only have 30some F4UDs but you have 1200 of its immediate predecessor and that's not exactly a bad aircraft) and antecedents of the F6F Hellcat in order to free up forces for your main thrust?
I understand you may not have many reserve squadrons to downgrade or quiet sectors but downgrading wherever possible would allow you to rotate these slightly obsolescent squadrons into the fight whilst allowing you to keep a core of your best squadrons outfitted with the best planes possible. This would tend to ease your replacement worries and allow you to mount more sustained operations.

Well, that's that settled then.

Isn´t downgrading only possible with PDU on? I think when this game started PDU was just a dream. Else I don´t think PzB would have Oscar IIs on duty.

RE: Disaster at Tinian - Halsey Court Martialled
This is a pre PDU game. So I think downgrades are not possible.
RE: Disaster at Tinian - Halsey Court Martialled
Ah, sorry, I thought downgrades might be possible without PDUs... Sheesh.. Reminds me why I didn't get the game until I heard PDUs were enabled. Sorry about the poor advice then.

RE: Disaster at Tinian - Halsey Court Martialled
The advice was good just not possible in this game.
I would not want to be trying this battle if the Japanese had 1,000's of Tonies and Tojos on defence rather than Oscars and Zekes.
My casualties are worrying and my CVR's dont seem to be replacing my bombers. Also my sorties are gettign low and to rotation of carrier TF's are not keeping up.
I am considering trying to laugh the whole battle off as a bluff to PZB delay for 3 days.
Withdraw all my TF's to Entiwock re arm replenish and then come back turn the amphbs around for a turn as well.
What do you think would he fall for it ?
I dont want to risk an invasion with my pilots so tired and low on sorties I will think about it a little
Today I hit Guam tomorrow I have ordered a stand down of bombers while I sweep and recon to try and figure out his strength

RE: Operation Thunderchild
ORIGINAL: Andy Mac
I am expecting a minimum of 1,000 AV, about 60,000 troops and a 1 in 4 chance of 240mm CD guns plus probably some armour....
But it is flat terrain whereas Saipan and Pagan are mountains so I will avoid the x3 mountain multiple.
Well, you had better hope you shut down the airfields on Tinian and nearby as he has show n he can airlift 15-25,000 troops in very short order. The Mariannas are also close enough that barges might be a possibility for intra-island transfers. Did you consider that in your calculations? If not, that's maybe a total of 100,000 troops he could get to Tinian, all well supplied. It's a good decision not to go for a place with mountains, that would be a killer.
And what level forts are we talking about? Level 9, I suppose?
What is the strength of your invading land forces? You've done a good job of detailing the naval and air assets assigned to this, but I've missed the force strength of what you're putting ashore -- they're the ones that will need to do the fighting after all!
I see that you've been kocking down his air assets and gradually closing a lot of airfields. Can you keep that up and make the whole area a no-fly zone before you send in the transports? Or at least make his air attacks be at long range -- that should make a for a lot of unescorted bombers and enable you to inflict more damage on his troop/supplies. It would also silence a decent number of CDs which in the past have really caused mayhem amongt your invasion forces.

RE: Operation Thunderchild
It'spretty much irrelevant to close airfields to prevent reinforcement by air.
Mavis and Emillys will do the trick anyway.
Mavis and Emillys will do the trick anyway.
RE: Operation Thunderchild
I have 170,000 men and about 500 tanks on the way plus two Corps HQ and lots of arty but to be honest I am wondering whether to proceed.
The unit count is rising at Tinian and despite my best efforts I am being outproduced by the Japanese.
I have identified 3 Divisions on Tinian plus an Ultra Heavy Arty Bde and at least some vehicles which means tanks (my worst case projection had 2)
I physically cannot keep my Hellcat Sqns at full strength whereas the Japanese seem to have an inexhaustable supply of fighters. (Hellcat pool is almost exhausted when what is aboard my carriers is gone thats it. I lose 40 - 100 per day depending on what I do and if they shoot down 200 - 300 enemy planes so what I cannot replace my losses the Japanese can.
Also keeping Tinian closed to prevent air transport is almost impossible due to the engineers and supply he has there.
I am very depresssed about the whole thing.
(For all players PDU's will make invasions by the allies in 44 without LBA to cover them impossible IMO I am only keeping up at present because the Hellcat eats Zekes and Oscars a 1:2 or 1:1 exchange rate is disastrous IMO for the allies if all those Oscars were Tonies or Tojo's I would be toast (or god forbid Franks)
OK I will give it a few more days and see what happens a decision will be required before I land any toops I may go ahead just to see if it can be done.
I am coming round to a view that this may just not be possible without a few hundred more superforts and more carriers.

RE: Operation Thunderchild
OK guys I am pissed off this is chronic.
My Hellcat pool is empty after a turn that I wipe out 600 enemy aircraft. A great victory but at the cost of a months productuion of Hellcats.
This is out of order I get 144 F6F's a month - I am willing to bet PZB is producing 750 Zekes pus Oscars, Tonies, Tojos etc a month how am I supposed to compete I shoot down 4 : 1 and its not good enough not even close. I also get 144 useless night fighting hellcats a month I would kill at the moment to be able to deploy these night fighting planes but I cannot.
(anyone in a PDU game considering the Mariana my advice forget it its suicide)
The operation is off I am not going to commit 2 Corps to an invasion with no chance of success.
Unit count is now 20 on Tinian and rising I may as well forget it.

RE: Operation Thunderchild
Once again because the allies are limited to historic production when the Japanese aren't the allies get outproduced.
I am going back to the drawing board and am throwing out 3 months of planning Tinian is off

RE: Operation Thunderchild
OK lads I have calmed down a little I am not sure what to do I was bringing 7 Divisions to Marianas to ensure capture I would need 3 x as many which is just stupid.
I will not hide the fact that I am dissapointed.
And I apologise to anyone hoping for the war defining battle but IMO its just not feasible and its time to think again.
I have proven I can operate behind the Marianas perhaps its time to go deep and bypass I am going to think and plan this a little more

RE: Operation Thunderchild
So, Andy, do you have an idea of where you might redirect this invasion/how long will it take you to re-prepare for your alternate target?
John Dillworth: "I had GreyJoy check my spelling and he said it was fine."
Well, that's that settled then.
Well, that's that settled then.
RE: Operation Thunderchild
At present to be honest I dont.
I need at least a month to get some sys damage off the fleet and restock the Hellcat pool.
I have a corps prepared for Marcus and for Wake plus in SWPAC forces starting to prep for Malaya.
As a time filler I may consider launching 1st Armies assault on Malaya earlier than planned but the Marianas are impossible. (4 units have flown in since the start of the offensive and over 9,000 men)
In 50 days I get 4 more Gps of Superforts that would allow a 2 Groups every day sustained offensive and 2 more Essex's plus the 2 Essex class in drydock will be back.
But they are useless unless I can get the Hellcats to put on them.

RE: Operation Thunderchild
I wondered if you would be able to do this Andy. I think going straight in is not the correct thing to do. without the drain of the British in India PzB is able to defend with a lot more. And that production thing hurts also, sucks that Japan can produce more than you. My orginal plan was to bypass the Marianas for a while, taking Wake, Marcus, and possibly Iwo in the North and the Palaus in the South to cut the Marianas off and provide some heavy bomber bases in range. Coupled with continued attacks into the SRA area to try and eliminate some of the oil production. I wish you well Andy, it is a tough game you are in.
RE: Operation Thunderchild
Aye thanks.
Not sure what or where to go West Borneo, Malaya, Java, Mindanao are all being considered.
Whereever it is it will be an ahistoric deep strike because thats what I need to do

RE: Operation Thunderchild
Take your navy and wipe him from the seas.
If you cut his oil life line his production will eventually collapse.
Can you send the superfortresses against oil in the SRA?

RE: Operation Thunderchild
I can and will.
I think I have made the right decision I will probably second guess myself for a long time to come but I was losing to many irreplaceable fighters.
It may be a little chicken but my gut was telling me not to do it so I listened. (I was hungover this morning after seeing Robert Plant and Deacon Blue play yesterday ....Plant still has great pipes !!!) I hope it watn the hangover making me pessimistic

RE: Operation Thunderchild
Well in my game as japan im able to stack up 3 month supply of oil in 6 months so i think that cutting PzB oil supply will not help much as he has like a year supply or so... i don't know in what condition were SRA OIL fields and when they were captured... the only thing that can couse a Allied Victory is destroying the Aircraft Production plant's Well Andy i understand your frustration maybe some one should talk to designers of this game to allow allied player to at least recive additional modern Aircraft instead of the old types like 144 F-6-F + F-4-F nr... this is redicoulus that Allies are outproduced[:D]
