I am not understanding this game

Post by songdovenym »

Back around 2001 or 2002, I had a great baseball management game that let you choose ticket prices, coaches, and had much better sport coverage than "this trade will impact both teams", which is pspn's response to every trade that happens.

Here are the specific things that I am not understanding with this game.

1) Why is that every team has a payroll of over 100,000,000 dollars? It's extremely unrealistic.
2) How come I can only have 35 players on my entire roster, including minor leagues? It seems like an entire waste of a minor league system!
3) How come I can't change the name of the annual awards?
4) Why can't I manage or at least watch the All-Star game?
5) Why are trades so unrealistic? For instance, how is that I'm trying to trade Alex Rodriguez, and the team's response is that there is no player they will trade up front for him?
6) Why is money not an object? My team started out with so much money that I can sign every all-star that I want. It's ridiculous... there's just no strategy which makes it a little boring.

I hope that there are fixes to many of these things and my lack of playing has limited me. If you can help, it will be much appreciated!

I think you're speaking about Baseball Mogul. There are various versions of it still out there.

Some responses

1. You can change every team's finances if you want
2. You can have rosters as large as 70 players if you want. However, 35 man works best with real players since they enter the league when the made their MLB debut.
3. Award names are editable in the XML file.
4. The All Star game isn't played. That would be a nice addition.
5. Is that with any team or just one team? That seems strange.
6. It takes a little bit for the finances to settle down. If you want decrease your available funds for a greater challenge.

Are you playing with the demo version? Take advantage of the current half-price sale, and upgrade to the latest beta patch (1.19).

Also, use the forum search feature for particular topics. Some of these issues have already been discussed in some detail.

As for finances, you can just turn them off.

How can I change the finances? I know that I can change team's available financces, but that won't change their current payroll.

Also, how am I able to have a 70 player roster? Every time I have more than 35, it won't let me advance in the season.

And finally, what is an XML file and how can I access that?

Thanks for the responses, I appreciate it.

As KG Erwin asked, are you using the Demo. If so you are limited to what can be done. Register the game and the other options become available.

The XML file is Simulation engine file. It is located in the XML folder under the PureSim folder. You can open it with note pad. Be sure to back up the original before making any changes. Also read the various threads dealing with the XML file.

How do you register your game?

Not sure how to register. I bought it online with a hardcopy sent to me. I would expect that it was registered when I bought it in the online transaction. Anyways, registration link takes you to register with Matrix, which I don't like. I don't want commercialism in my email inbox.

On to your point about finances. You can adjust several aspects of the finances - a ton, really. There is limited adjustability via the assn setup screen, when you can choose the level of markets you'd like to play with (high, medium, low, etc) or you can decrease the % of total team finances during setup, too. Additionally, there is the XML file which allows you to tweak almost every part of it. In particular, I've found that decreasing one of the initial lines in the file, quoted below, is very important for shaving the overall finances down big-time, which I think are too much for my tastes:

<FRANCHISE_POINT_MULT desc="" formatCurrency="true">250.0</FRANCHISE_POINT_MULT>

The figure in red is what you want to reduce. I dropped mine to about 100 and it makes a world of difference. I might even drop it down further and restart the assn (started in 1966). I find that I still have about half my assets available for salaries and so forth.

Another line you might want to drop is this one, found a little below that:

<BASE_SAL_ADJUST>.700</BASE_SAL_ADJUST>

This adjusts the overall salary per player, best as I can tell. I currently have mine at .600, and this might be a main cause of why the payroll is too low and I have about 45-50% of my funds left over. OTOH, you have to account for inflation and the first few years when contracts run out and they get much beefier, so I think I'll play this assn for awhile and check out what happens. I am still new to how these values work with/against each other.

Bottom line, there is mucho you can tweak in the XML and for me, if it's there, I want to play with it. This, IMO, is one of the best features of Puresim - the ability to get in and really push the engine the way I want to. Shaun took a good cue from FPS Baseball Pro (I guess that is what he considered) when he made a master file available like this to tweak stuff. I have no clue if OOTP or other sims have that, but if not, then I don't want a part of them (personally speaking). I want the power!

I don't have an XML folder. I bought the game a week ago off digital download. There is no Puresim folder. When I go to Puresim in the start menu, I get options to uninstall, view the license agreement, view the catalog, register online, play the game, and check latest changes... Am I missing something?

Have you not read what I said? I am NOT using the demo. I bought the game. I have never played the demo. Why is that so difficult for everyone to grasp?

Your start menu does not show folders on your hard disk, it shows shortcuts.

In order to browse to a folder use explorer.

Example:

1. Click on the start menu
2. Click "Run"
3. In the open box type "c:\Matrix Games\PureSim Baseball 2007\xml"

Now you are actually browsing that folder on your hard disk.

Hope that helps.

Puresim is a file in that folder named puresim.xml. The pursim_europe is pursim_europe.xml. I am guessing that the last is used by people who live in europe. Assuming that you live in the US, open the puresim.xml file using notepad.

Do you not understand how to search your harddrive for the relevant Matrix directory, regardless of whether you have the full game or demo?

And zip the attitude if you will - a good way to ensure no one helps you in the future.

"zip the attitude"? And you think that your condescension is justified? I answered several times that I was not using a demo and you tailored your answer despite that as if I were. And I apologize for apparently not being as computer savvy as you regard yourself. No one, other than puresimmer and deltadogg, were specific with their instructions and you assumed some sort of extreme knowledge that I think many casual gamers such as myself never thought necessary to play a game.

I think you need to go back and look at the amount of effort I invested in trying to share some stuff with you on the xml and your questions in that regard. And I apologize for overlooking the post there where you explained you weren't using the demo, but had the full version. It apparently got lost in the plethora of questions you have posted in this thread.

You strike me as a somewhat thankless person. Normally I bend over backwards to help people until they prove they are disrespectful such as you have.

And that'll be the end of this for me...

That's really sad that you're going to make a character judgment of an individual because a post that wasn't even directly at you, but was a general frustration with the technical knowledge that the answers required, and everyone assuming I was using the demo after I said I wasn't. How was I to know that the folder is the same for the demo and the regular version? As I said, I apologize for not being as computer savvy as you would like, but I can guarantee that most computer owners probably have even less working knowledge than I myself do. Be that all as it may, I do appreciate the help that you did give me and I thank you for your time.
