Tobruk Forts???

Post by TOCarroll »

What is the best way for the Axis forces to get through the forts guarding Tobruk (In The Campaign For North Afrika...Bob Cross' Scenario). The "Forts are really dug in immobile tanks with a huge infantry attack factor, and a small armour defense factor (if I read it right [&:]). Seems like you should isolate Tobruk, back off one row of hexes, and hit the forts with armour, artilllery, and air.[:D] Problem is, when I do that, I knock em out, but take wicked casulties[:-]. By the time I get the first round of forts killed, most of the Afrika Korps is back at Tripoli, or Sirte, or wherever, returning as replacements. I love the campaign, but can't seem to get past this snag. Perhaps part of the problem is calling Ialian armour "Tanks"?

J. Stalin, 1936-1941...A. Hitler, 1933-1945. W. Churchill (very rarely, and usually in North Africa). F. D. Roosvelt (smart enough to let the generals run the war).

Armour is very hard to kill with anything other than self-propelled AT equipment of your own. The L3/35 (which makes up the bulk of Italian armour in 1940 and 1941) had no main gun, so it isn't useful for this purpose.

Based on your description, I'd suggest you break a hole in the defences at one point and then push to the supply point. Any infantry defending the fort on the inside will be less hard work than these forts.

An alternative would be led artillery bombardments to disentrench them, then find units with a large number of active defenders plus a high recon value (perhaps Italian armoured units, since the L3/35s have recon capability), get them into a good supply state, and try to produce RBCs- if, as the briefing claims, the units have such low defence values.

"War? Huh. What is it good for?"
"Absolutely nothing."
