Bug Report: CPU Usage 100%

Post by Bigfish »

Hi,

i bought H3 ANW this week and already have a problem:

Shortly after i started Harpoon 3 the CPU Usage is at 100%. I think this is a Bug?

System:
CPU with 3 GHz Intel Processor - HT is enabled
ATI Radeon X300 Series Graphics Controller
1 GB RAM
Windows XP SP2

Is this a known Bug? I read nothing about that in this Forum.

Also i read about an free Update 3.7.1 but i didn't find the download: http://www.matrixgames.com/games/latestfiles.asp

Hello Bigfish,

the 100% CPU usage is normal for Harpoon 3 ANW. It is caused by the user interface continually polling the window for mouse/keyboard input. This is a leftover from the old DOS days that we'll have to live with until a new GUI is implemented. Fortunately H3 readily gives up these CPU cycles should other programs need them.

As to the first patch (3.7.1) you are referring to. You can't find that download because it hasn't been released yet. We are awaiting it shortly though.

Cheers,
JP

Hello JP,

thank you for the fast answer. I have to see how i deal with ist.

Thanks
Bigfish

The origin Hapoon II had this CPU usage too? Then i think i know why H2 killed my brand new 486 mainboard in the mid nineties.

Hello JRyan,

sounds good. Is this an official beta version? Are there any info about a new gui version?

The launcher has a slider bar that allows you to adjust what resolution you want, in my case I have a widescreen laptop and it works great. It should be released at some point but the build is not quite ready. Its just one of the things in the beta build.[:D]

Guys,

I am also getting 100% Processor usage and I can feel the laptop physcially warming up. Is there anything i can do to stop this?

Is there a patch or whatnot on the way?

Thanks Tom

See here

I read that. Thanks.

What I was wondering was whether more memory or a better GFX card would solve or ease off the usage. My desktop its fine, just laptop.

No, the usage will be 100% as long as you have a single processor machine. Some people see less than 100% since they have multiprocessor or dual core machines.

Fortunately H3 readily gives up GUI CPU cycles for other applications if they need them.

Sorry to go on.

Will a really hot processor or what feels to be a hot laptop cause hardware issues or are they built to take it??

Thanks

Thats one great thing about the sim, it will use whatever the processor can spare to speed the calcs up. Believe me, from a 60Mhz pentium to the Pentium4 that I have now, it uses it well. Nice thing is that it will gladly give CPU cycles to other things running as needed but will always use any spare cycles to speed the game.

It all depends... One of my customers loves to pause MSN website games for hours and they just eat the CPU resources. Eventually the machine had overheated one too many times or was left without enough ventilation and it is now unuseable (though technically still operational at moments). Most new notebooks will be good enough to prevent destruction but you should take care to not leave the machine on carpet or furniture where airflow will be blocked (and as such, many notebooks no longer suck in air from the bottom, only from back and sides). Anyway, I run HC and H3 almost exclusively on a notebook and have never had issues.

Ditto on what TonyE said. Keep your laptop off the surface and it won't overheat. The rubber feet or plastic potrusions at the bottom should give the laptop enough breathing room.
