Windtalkers
I have a question for you guys since you know a LOT more than I do. In "Windtalkers" how authenic was the assualt on Saipan? You know, the scene which opens up with some planes dropping bombs on the Japanese positions? If anyone can answer that I would greatly appreciate it. Thanks everyone! [&o]

Saw it, found it UNREALISTIC, and never saw it again. Liked the thin red line better......

Brain: The Usual Pinky we will try to take over the World;)

Hi,
It was disappointing despite it starring Nicholas Cage. Hope Clint Eastwood's upcoming Battle of Iwo Jima would be better - it should be![:D]

It should be a ten part TV Series, much in the vien of Band of Brothers, basically a 10 hour movie.
Band of Brothers, was based on Easy Company of the 101st Airborne, and the Ambrose book, followed the Company from training, D-Day, Market Garden, Bulge and 'liberating' the Eagles Nest.
Really superb series, one of the best 'movies' (if you could call it that) ive seen.
Buy it if you can.

Some more comprehensive info there. If its half as good as Band of Brothers, itll be amazing.

RE: Windtalkers
Band of Brothers is much better than Saving Private Ryan! Better combat, more realistic and the length allows to relationships beteewn the soldiers be made and broken, the Battle of the Bulge episode is very sad because you feel a connection with the characters.
Production was ment to have begun last summer, so i guess it should be soon... 2007 perhaps.

RE: Windtalkers
After opening sequences "Saving Private Ryan" started drifting towards first person shooter game like movie with usual Spielberg's soap opera additions. I found Thin Red Line much more interesting with as good combat sequences. Never been at war but watching TRL you know it is scary. In contrast Private Ryan finishes like old Hollywood fantasy war movie.

like old Hollywood fantasy war movie
Spielberg is a fan of the "old fasioned" Hollywood style of storytelling.
Some examples of his work shows this: The Indiana Jones movies, E.T., "Back to the Future" movies...
And judging from the money he made, he has a point. (Not all of his work is gold, but still...)

Isn't Eastwood a little too old to be playing soldier [:D], or did he direct the thing?

RE: Windtalkers
I have spoken once with a veteran (well in fact exchanged mails) about the Thin Red Line, and if he agreed that the infantry battle sequences (like attacking under fire with almost no sighting of the enemy, or the bunker attack sequence) and those before the battle were very good and realistic, he found the movie twisted by the pacifism of the author. The reflexions the soldiers have about killing enemy soldiers were rather rare in the Pacific, where 'Japanese' were not seen as equals by Americans. He was also surprised by the high number of prisoners shown in the film, and the proximity between them and the American soldiers. He had never seen more than two Japanese surrendering together and the Americans were very cautious about them each time. His conclusion was that the movie will have been far more better if it had taken place in Europe where this kind of contact may have been possible with German soldiers.

Maybe the video "US Marines at Tarawa" on this link will help answer it for you, I know the film is Tarawa but I am sure the experience of combat was relatively the same.
WARNNING PARTS OF VIDEO ARE GRAPHIC !

edit: Tarawa video is at the bottom of page
