Uggh binary. That's more primative than cuneiform.

Transmitting a tone of that frequency on a long distance line would put the connection into "operator mode", allowing access to more functionality. Whistles that came free in Capn Crunch boxes were discovered to emit a perfect 2600hz tone. [:D]

Actually it's worse than that. It was *analog*, which isn't even binary.

Right! Don't think this works anymore. The 2600 tone could be heard at the end of long distance phone call for the "disconnect" signal.

Some blind fella could whistle this 2600 and supposedly the two-toned dialing codes (i have my doubts on this second one, but the first is easy). By doing this, he could "dial" long-distance for free. His nickname was "Captain Crunch" - and he ended up in jail for doing this (illegally obtaining long-distance service).

Right you are, although it was at the time when folks were messing with binary codes, so hackers ended up doing both.

Y.I.P. = Youth International Party (not Industrial)

These Phone Phreakers could whistle the two-toned dialing codes by themselves, so they built devices called "Blue Boxes" that reproduced the tones.

Various clubs grew up around guys who did this, one was Homebrew Computer Club in California. Two members of the club had already made a name for themselves as manufacturers of 'blue boxes'. Their handles were Berkeley Blue (Steve Jobs) and Oak Toebark (Steve Wozniak), the founders of Apple Computers.

Nah, I've got some Sicilian friends in dark suits and very narrow ties to take care of that sort of thing...

Have them talk to my Calabrese friends in dark suits and wide ties (old school)... (not for naught that my name ends in a vowel!)
