Subs
oh, and on the topic of submarine warfare, the USN got its first confirmed submarine kill of the war just west of Pearl, with some direct hits from depth charges. There are still a couple of IJN subs lurking around there but not too many... I imagine Simon has them marking the various atolls.
USN subs have been doing far better than I am used to. Merchants seem to sink when torpedoed rather than go back to base and get fixed. Simon's ASW efforts have badly damaged 1 S-boat and thats it. Already the kill ratio is very much in favour of the submarines, and its only 1941! I think Allied subs in 1943 will be terrifying things.

Build up in Malaya and PI continues. Some pesky Swordfish hit an AP off Kota Bharu. Troops embarking for the next epansion phase.

RE: 12/15/41
A Dutch submarine sinks a troop carrying AP on the surface east of Malaya, as well as the Swordfish attack.
Needless to say that little patch of water is alive wit submarines.
Rabaul will fall any day now.
AKs that fled east from PI are being bombed around Saipan, maybe one or two will make it but it looks bad.
MiniKB off Timor. I wonder if Simon will go for Timor early... I remember in our last game Timor never fell, and was such a pain in his ass. [:D]. I wouldnt be surprised if he's going to make damn sure that doesn't happen again.

Plus NW Oz is a lot more difficult to supply and get to as well.

RE: 12/16/41
Indeed, in Malaya theres an ordered retreat going on, though no effort is being spared into bringing torpedo bombers into action against Jap shipping. The units at Victoria Point arrived in India today in fact, no sense in wasting those after all. [:D], although Malaya isn't being totally abandoned without a fight.
Dutch submarines sink an AV and a troop carrying AP east of Malaya, thats 4 sinkings in 2 days. Subs are waaay more effective in CHS! The US submarines north of the PI are getting fish into Jap ships too. I'm impressed. I thought the sub arm was a bit screwed in WITP, no longer it seems.
Admittedly this is early days so Jap shipping is concentrated at obvious locations, but still.
Marblehead takes one for the team at Lautern as Kates from mini KB come in. A P-40 CAP provides little protection.
Jap landings at Wewak, Simon seems to think New Guinea is a priority, and lots of Jap shipping south of Amboina now, but it looks like its heading northeast. I'm still suspicious of Simons intentions down here... specially given his speed of advance.
Jap troops are finally sighted on the trail to Burma.
China very quiet... not even much bombing. For my part I'm not doing anything audacious.

Believe it or not the current ship loss rates are about equal for both sides, 350 points apiece of shipping VPs.
I got off very light at Pearl Harbor.

RE: 12/16/41
Another day passes... MiniKB moves off east of Timor. Jap battleships near Macassar. Allied subs torpedoed a Jap again near Formosa.
First serious air raid on Singapore, ~70 Nells/Betties hit the place. Buffalos put up a fight but the raid was unescorted and Betties/Nells arent one shot firelighters anymore with CHS tweaking the durability. Moderate damage is done.

Holding out pretty well so far I think! I peek at other AARs and see Singers air defence pounded to dust by the 19th.
He's only probing though, not yet deployed his Zeroes. He's busy sweeping over my other Malaya bases, suspicious that he is. [;)]
AVG hasn't been deployed anywhere yet. Holding back on them for now.

Shame I as operational commander can only put PoW in the right place at the right time, what it does when I get it there is anybody's guess. [:(].
PoW and Repulse have night fighting xp >70!

PoW vs Hosho
Simon will be pleased to hear that neither PoW nor Repulse are that bad off - atm anyway.
Air deployments in the DEI is tweaked a bit given the situation there - I actually thought MiniKB was an SCTF not his carriers! Shame a 14" shell didnt land on one though... I'm sure Simon was having memories of Warspite blowing away two Jap CVLs in our last game. [:D]
The general strategy of "managed retreat" continues to my satisfaction. A Jap submarine torpedoes an AP near Fiji, far from ASW assets at the moment alas, but the area around Pearl is a dangerous place for Japanese submarines, with another one being heavily depth charged today.
Operation Catalina Cordon is underway in CentPac.
Other devious things are also underway, but opsec forbids their open discussion. [:D]

RE: 12/21/41
Yeah, CHS has definitely made fighters much less effective as a counter against bombers, and especially Betties and Nells.
Wasn't so much thinking of those CLs so much as the torpedoing of DD Electra at Macassar practically without loss from the Betties, despite the Betties being unescorted and despite P-40s being based there. Really it looks like even small numbers of Jap bombers infamous for their vulnerability can breeze in and out even protected targets.
Bodes ill for carrier supported invasions against defended positions later on I suspect.
...speaking of CAP I've barely seen the dreaded Zero yet...
