How to close an arifield

Post by pvj »

Question from a newbie

Am running the Jap side. Time Jan 44.

My evil allied foe is trashing me everywhere with zillions of 4E bombers. But in China I have him down to one last base and have 350000+ men closing in - he will have app 175000+ men and level 9 fort, 450+ planes bombing me every turn. His fighters are keeping me from stopping supplies comming in from India by air. It will be very difficult to take the base.

Question; will bombardment by land forces destroy his airfield and/or stop reinforcemnet and/or destroy his supplies?

I suspect you are talking Chungking here, in my experience its impossible to take - repeat impossible - if he has any sizeable force there. You cannot stop supply coming into it and the force multiplier for a fort level 9 plus terrain makes it impregnable - I have tried!

Bombardment won't touch the airfield.

You can easlily take Chungking, but not without the air supremacy above the city. Just try to mass every IJA bomber you have and send a great strike. You'll lose zillions of fighters but some 200 Sallies are able to close the AF...then keep on bombing it, no matter how many planes it will cost you...that's the only way imho

Artillery fire won't destroy supplies the way air raids do, but will consume some as 1) Chinese guns will counterfire 2) Chinese squads will be disabled and will use supplies to return to normal state 3) possibly artillery fire will rise the disruption and fatigue of the defending units and more supplies will be used to restore then to a better state.

If Chengtu (probably your target) is a hornet nest, rather than try to close it you may try to close the base from where fly the transport (probably Ledo or a nearby base). It will probably have less fighters on CAP and in both raid periods (morning and afternoon), all transport AC will be considered by the game to be on the ground, they only fly in the air transport phase. So if you send 2-300 bombers on their base you may destroy a majority of the transport AC based here. It will at least reduce the activity of the groups for some days. You may even be able to close the airbase.

Chegtu may be winnable, but it won't be quick. You will have to win the air war to do it though. Then tons of engineers to take down those forts one level at a time. Then aerial bombing to bring supplies to zero. You will basically have to starve them out....its the only way with massed Chinese troops.

Can't starve Chegtu. It gets 300 supply automatically per turn even if you bomb out it's resources and industry.
