Newbie question

World in Flames is the computer version of Australian Design Group classic board game. World In Flames is a highly detailed game covering the both Europe and Pacific Theaters of Operations during World War II. If you want grand strategy this game is for you.

Newbie question

Post by Missouri_Rebel »

I am new to wif and was wondering what rules are relevant to the computer version of the game? There are so many optional rules from the various modules that I am unaware of which rules to learn and what are the ones to bypass as to avoid confusion and shorten the learning process for me.

Can someone tell me what rules I should study and those I shouldn't?

Thanks,

Mo Reb

Hi Missouri_Rebel. Welcome to the forum [:)]

Don't worry too much about learning everything. Most of the rules are only encountered every now and again. The core of the game is the land, air and naval combat system that you use most of the time. If you want to you could spend more time understanding that.

The important thing to remember is that the game will come with a lot of tutorial material to help newbies get started. It will be easier to learn than cardboard WiF for this reason. Also, the computer is going to do the rule checking for you. At turn's end there is production and a bunch of other stuff but you will be stepped through it fairly painlessly by the game.

If you have any other questions, feel free to ask.

The bad news is you will eventually want to be familiar with all the WiF rules. The good news is what Neilster said: MWiF will do its best to make it easy for you to do so, or at least easier.

Thanks guys. On the surface the rules seem daunting, but I am confident that I will be able to pick them up eventually. All things good are worth the trouble.I have been wanting a grand stategy game for a long, long time.Although I am new to wif, I am confident of it's execution merely becase of it's longevity. Tried and true I would presume.

Are there any decent sites that might give a newbie a few examples of play or some other useful material?

Thanks again.

Mo Reb

the easiest way to learn WiF is to study the sequence of play, learn the force pool rules, punch out the counters for the Barbarossa scenario, and start playing it. following the sequence of play, you will then learn movement and combat and the air rules. the rest can be skipped for that scenario, even production can as you will end up wanting to replay the first two turns anyway as you uncover your rules mistakes. That is a fun scenario to learn the core land rules of the game. Once you can play it all the way through without picking up the rules too many times and expand it to include the production rules, you can start over with the Guadalcanal scenario and learn the generally more detailed naval rules. A few times through that one and you are ready for a full game such as the 1944 scenario to start getting a grip on the next important concept ... Offensive Chits and action limits with large forces.

After playing barbarossa twice, one player trying each side, I try to get one or two games of guadalcanal to teach the unpredictability of the naval system.

Then we are usually off to the races with the '39 campaign which ends early the first few tries with the new player.  Most newbies don't conquer france on their first try, but they sure pay attention the next time they play france and watch their opponent conduct a victorious campaign.

Germany in the '39 game is one of the best powers to learn the game with - it was how I cut my teeth on WiF - and our group here in Ottawa, assuming someone gets a house with the space for a WiF room, is going to get another new guy to cut his teeth on the game that way.

The Commonwealth is hard for beginners. You have to think both waaaaay ahead and globally.

The good thing about MWiF will be...no one needs to know how hard one sucks as a beginner. Play against the AI or other beginners online to improve. The tutorials will make learning easier too.

One of the reasons I suggested the video replay function was so that newbies could watch the moves made by the AI/human opponent and say "Hey..what did he just do there?" Press rewind. "Oh...he loaded paratroopers on to an air transport"

hey, im up to it-plenty of naval and air battles, with a massive campaign to conquer Spain gave me plenty.
ironically, there was never a battle of britain or a battle of the atlantic-my convoy lines were only severed from australia and india, but that was a voluntary recall, so i had about 50 points of convoys in reserve.
