Attack the middle of a line first??

Post by larryfulkerson »

When you are facing a group of enemy units do you tend to attack from the ends and work toward the middle ( making a large group possibly danger packed red ) or do you tend to attack the middle first and the ends later?

I'm not sure what the best procedure is but here I'm attacking the middle first:

In a situation like that I tend to go for the middle and then the end units as they are isolated and vaporized easier as there's nowhere for them to retreat to. But then again I lose a lot more than I win so maybe that's how NOT to do it [:D]

Them russians divisions sure are in a SNAFU [X(], imo the best is to cut the kessel in half and create two, one-hex pockets, enemy units surrounded in a single hex are easy to destroy in TOAW (maybe too much).

I tend to go first for hexes allowing flanking attacks, so I guess I'm more often than not beginning with the ends and working towards the middle.

Is the armor on an open or wooded hex? I suppose regardless hitting an armor unit of this strength with infantry and AT that's essentially passive (i.e. for defence) maybe isn't the best idea. I'd pound the infantry out of the woods on to the armor unit with flanking attacks and direct arty support until you've got them all in the one hex. Then flanking attacks until they're done to death. All attacks at limited attack, minimize losses. Check, adjust, maybe change units, repeat dosage.

Yeah, my thoughts too.

But if all the units were identical, I guess I'd try to break the unit in the middle first.

I tend to go for the flanks where I can hit a unit from three hexes and then work my way in eventually surronding the center unit/s and destrorying it/them. I can avoid large stacks by places some attacking units on limited attack.
