Fly Out Distances/Tagging Up

Post by PadresFan104 »

Shaun - With 1.20, I still get "Deep" fly outs that are landing 50' or more before the wall, and then I have to use this information in judging whether to tag-up a runner or not. Is it the distance in feet that really matters, or should we also take into consideration whether the game thinks the ball was "Deep" or not?

After reading this question, I thought it odd that you have this decision in the first place. Isn't this like asking you which base the shortstop should throw to in the middle of a play? or whether the batter should swing as the pitch is coming? Players make these decisions on the field, in real time.

I guess, but deciding whether to have a player tag-up or not has been in baseball board games and PC games for years...  Put's more control of the games outcome in the hands of the user, even if it isn't the type decision a manager is making in real-time.

I think part of the hassle with flyballs and tagups, is the way the game displays the flyball

in the game, you see a deep fly to the wall, and you think it got to be deep, but when you see the distance, it is a 280 foot fly

(really hate when you "see" the ball drop in front of the outfielder and then get the Homerun message)

plus maybe we need something so we know in game, how deep the outfielders are playing, at what range is a player, when he is normal, deep or shallow ?

(is a 324 foot flyball, a normal fly or a deep fly ?)

Sarge, just to be fair to Shaun, where you "see" the ball drop has a lot to do with whomever created the ballpark file you are using. I know that for my 2006 ballparks, I had some of my locations in the OF a bit off (Had to bring the Deep Flys in a bit) so that can make a difference. I've since fixed them and re-posted.

Anyway, the question still remains, should we be using the feet measurement or PbP description of the depth.

hi Padre

well, sure, I figured some of it was the ball park itself

but I Think something is going on with the ranges

my last game, I was watching and recording some

318 to the gap, Shallow right
320 to right, Deep
318 to left, Deep
327 to right, Deep
325 to right, Shallow
336 to left, normal
338 to center, normal
342 to center, normal
318 to left, Deep, SF to win the game

what we need is a idea of what is Shallow, Normal and Deep, then we can work out if this guy has a strong Arm or not

again, something is wrong when a 97 Speed runner gets thrown out on a deep fly to left with a 43 arm ?
(if it was shallow, then shame on me for gambling)

but a 35 Speed guy can score on a 320 foot fly to center with a strong arm CF

LOL, guess I will help move it up then

the last few games, been seeing some numbers that also don't make sense

had a flyball to right center, that was shown as 277 feet, bad enough it went to the warning track, but it was shown as a normal fly ball ?

which had 3 flys that game that were under 300 and all shown as normal

also, thought I had seen this before, but it was off the screen too fast to be sure, seen a fly ball of 0 feet, and that was to the warning track also, glad it wasn't a taggable ball, that would of been a tuffy to make a choice on

Nope, using all the 2006 ballparks that I created... Didn't realize that these issues could be caused by the background.....

I'm using the standard park background and it also seems a bit off.  Last game played in old Tiger Stadium, 440' straightaway center, 340' down the left field line, I had a 310' drive to deep center that looked like it went to the warning track, a 306' drive to deep center that looked like a pop up behind the SS, and a 279' blast to deep left that looked like it went to the warning track.
