No one is going to say, "Hey, lots of people could have put this out but we were selected at random from the phone book..."
RE: Battlefront gets Theatre of War (old name was WW2RTS).
You know Ranthood I just don't get why you are sooooooooo Displeased with Matrix, Battlefront and just about every publisher out there. You just might want to start looking into a new hobby, it abundantly clear you hate just about every title put out in the last five years.

Baah just another HTTR/COTA/Bullrun type of game. Not a wargame. A MOVIE!![]()

Dear Ravinhead, please, please, please tell me, WHAT GAMES DO YOU LIKE? What publisher do YOU think is putting quality games out there? What games would YOU like to see made? Your constant whining and complaining is really sad and pathetic. You claim to be a "wargamer for over 50 years" but I have yet to read one post of yours that isn't more than a constant bitch rant. Have you been complaining like this for over 50 years? Since you value your own opinion so very much, and since it seems to be the only reason you post here, give it to us. What, if you had the ability and resources, would you make? Sack up my man, opinions should be more than just non-stop complaints. They should be, at the very least, somewhat enlightening.

What "would you make" is easy. Everybody can dream up the perfect game in his mind. What "can you make" that is the interesting question [;)]

I really admire your composure and short but right-on-the-mark reply, while at the same time it also makes me despise some annoying and trollish traits found on someone else.[;)]ORIGINAL: Marc Schwanebeck

Best stick to playing mancala or checkers then.ORIGINAL: ravinhood
And what we have here is another "movie type game" where the AI plays the game and you watch basically like other games I have noted this change in.
Being in the position which realistically creates the command decisions required for the scale/theatre is greatly rewarding. As you accurately noted, it's also the future. Board games, and the PC games which copied them, were limited by the technology. You had to move every counter yourself. Finally getting away from that and introducing the feeling of true command is the best step PC games have taken.
But I'm sure Tic-Tac-Toe will still require you to fill in every box

I know ravinhood wants to deliver boot polish to troops to give a +1/8 on a fighting-retreat morale check, but some of us prefer to have subordinates doing boring stuff like that.

I think I understand Ravinhood's problem.
Sounds like he suffers from attention deficit or something.
I think that's what draws so many to so many games, that are all about constantly needing to "do something".
The idea of being able to decide, "this unit needs to do this" and then actually watch it happen under the control of the AI, is not a flawed manner of wargame simulation, but it leaves the attention starved person desperate for something to do in those few seconds where they are left unable to "do something important feeling".
There has to be a limit.
To use Ravinhood's logic, I should have to order a tank to move forward in a game of Steel Panthers, and then leap to a view of that tank from the tank commanders view point, and actually drive the tank in tank sim mode, before moving on to say a squad, where I had to command the squad leader, who might order a private to advance, where upon I would then have to walk that individual forward in first person shooter mode.
That IS what Ravinhood is implying, when he says just watching counters move in HTTR is a "movie wargame". I myself don't find it a problem, if I command a unit to move in HTTR, and then actually get to pick up a drink I have with me, and maybe take a few swallows while watching my command get acted upon.
One thing is for certain, there's no real chance in hell, that Ravinhood will ever be fit for command above the rank of corporal.
I can see him all twitchy and nervous if put in charge of a division. He'd be a nervous wreck. "What do you mean I have to just wait here and wait for my subordinants to check in?"

I LIKE that my life bothers them,
Why should I be the only one bothered by it eh.

Ok everyone,
Let's please stop making any personal judgements or attacks. I realize Ravinhood can get on people's nerves, but as long as he's not attacking anyone personally, you can disagree without being personal.
For the record, he regularly compliments our Tin Soldiers (and recently Panzer Command) titles, but doesn't seem thrilled by much else.
Regards,
- Erik

BTW, even though Red Orchestra is nominally not an RTS, is there anything this vaporware game has, that RO doesn't have already in terms of features, tactics and realism??
Vaporware? Doesn't seem to be....
BFS has one of the deepest sets of data I've ever seen......I would argue their info is superior to others out there including RO. RO doesn't have the RPG element to it that is also a draw for me.
The infantry doesn't change. We're the only arm of the military where the weapon is the man himself.

LOL I understand your sentiment, but having played a lot of RO it's main "flaw" is other players. If it was just 2 dedicated wargamers playing head to head controlling all units on each side that would be one thing, but having 32 guys going in 32 different directions is typically what you get in RO (of course I'm talking about public servers in general). I haven't played it in a few months so maybe it has gotten better...

Two words: clan play. You pick people you play with, and you can train with them until you turn blue in the face, and until you make one mean lean killin' machine.
Couple more words: real war is chaos too, and especially on tactical level in WW2, you can POSITIVELY count most people in your platoon will be idiots, with 50% perhaps being illiterate etc. We're talking about WW2 Russian and German armies here not modern Navy SEALs, so what you may call players being idiotic and not team oriented I may call certain dose of realism.
BTW some time ago I read long rant-ish article - I think it was by you Heat - where author complained about, basically, all other players being idiots and ruining the game for him, the game in question being Battlefield 2 I think, not RO. Anyway, lets say RO players are marginally smarter and more serious than BF2 crowd right from the start but give or take a word or two, what you said in that article, could apply to any other MP FPS out there.
Well I disagreed strongly with your stance in that article, which stroke me as being elitist and superior to others, and making a big fuss outta nothing. Yes there are idiots on the Internet. Yes some of them will team-kill and do other things to ruin your game. What else is new?? Apparently, this bothers you a lot, and is taking enjoyment away from RO and BF for you.... If that's the case you need to adapt your attitude mate [;)]
You have to part with being all-knowing, all-controling, micromanaging anal wargaming freak when playing these games. You have to realise you play with dozen or so (more or less) randomly grouped bunch of people on the Internet. THAT is the whole idea. In as much as you could not choose your squad mates in WW2 German/Russian/US/UK squad - you can't choose people in your RO (or any other MP FPS) team either. Get over it. Leave wargaming control freak personality behind. (And since I play WITP believe me I know what "wargaming control freak" I can be [:D])
BTW RO has very good, perhaps even too restrictive tools against idiots (TK kicks etc.)
Basically I can't remember when I had a game of RO ruined by idiots.
Sorry for being off topic but now that I re-read my post I think it's not too off topic after all - much of what I said could apply to this WW RTS too.
