Agonia y Victoria

Post by jesperpehrson »

I would like to hear some advice for Agonia y Victoria if someone has played it through.

Me and another fella are planning to play a PBEM-game with the scenario soon and I have just opened the game a few turns in single player.

I will play the republican and I would like to hear some advice of a grand strategy for success.

My initial thought is that I will have to hold around Madrid and in the north and if my opponent makes a push in the south I will yield some ground. I am also thinking that closing the toledo-gap, that would free up a lot of troops, could be a swell idea.

Anyone`?

I've played the scenario, but it's been a while and I don't remember enough to discuss the finer points of strategy.  Jarek Flis has played it quite a few times and can probably help if he sees this.

My thoughts for the Republicans would mainly be to hold your nerve initially and let the Nationalists attack where they will, reacting as appropriate. Obviously you can't afford to lose ground at Madrid, but if you can draw the enemy into a grinding advance elsewhere where he has to dislodge a fortified regiment from every hex, you're doing pretty well.

Now we are 50 or so turns (about half-time) into the scenario and this what happened:

In the south the republicans went on the offensive and captured both Malaga and Granada. They even approached both Gibraltar and Cordoba. After this they ran out of momentum and were pushed back from Malaga and Cordoba. Granada is still in republican hands but it is under constant pressure. The defense now goes from Almeria to Granada to Almaden/Ciudad Real.

In the center the nationalist put all their effort into knocking Madrid from the republicans. The Toledo front was mostly static but the Guadalajara front erupted with a surprising fury. Even with reserves from the Teruelfront to bolster the defenses the capital fell. After this a hardfought retreat to the river passing east of Toledo (Tajo?). Here the republicans made a stand and not until just recently did they retreat further towards Albacete. The front is rather stable still and recent reinforcements have bolstered the defenders.

The Teruelfront has been mostly quiet even if Cuenca was lost around turn 40.

In the north the republicans went on the offensive and captured many of the cities in Aragon and Basque country. Saragossa and Huesca are now the ones still in republican hands and in force. Saragossa is however under siege and the defenders are crumblings. Hopefully reinforcements will arrive soon. Huesca is well defended.

Plans for the future is retreating to a shorter defensive line as soon as Ciudad Real, Albacete, Granada, Saragossa and Huesca are lost. This should still make me "win" a draw in spite of losing Madrid. What is working against me is that reinforcements are scarce after turn 60.

No pasaran...más... [:-]
