The event editor and graphics

Post by Dave Ferguson »

The new event editor has a lot more slots and the game now benefits from flexible graphics handling but is there a way to manipulate map graphics using events, for example changing to a alternative map tile set depending on game turn and/or weather conditions. For me those russian winters just do not look frozen enough even with the snow overlay.

Hi!

Indeed, "insert terrain" would be a very nice addition to the event editor and give the designer flexibility to do all kinds of things, some conventional.. some rather weird.

As an example, you can have a river delta flood by inserting "marsh" hexes. Pulling them out when the rainy season is over.

I've thought about an "old west" type of scenario. Here it would be very kewl to be able to have "villages" sprout up or roads or railraods (broken) which could then be "built."

Having the ability to "insert" of "delete" terrain would be a fantastic improvement for the editor and allow folks with real imagination to do some wonderous things.

If you just want graphics, then this could be achieved if the program could be made to rename the scenario (just adding an extra whitespace would be enough) by event. Then the program would automatically look in another folder for the graphics, which could contain a special winter set.
"What did you read at university?"
"War Studies"
"War? Huh. What is it good for?"
"Absolutely nothing."

Or perhaps just rename the default directory!

I tried this

1. opened and saved a scenario fom the WW2 east front folder, except I saved the game in the WW2 missc folder
2. on opening the saved game the graphics were from the WW2 east front folder which contained modified graphics.
3. used the open new game dialogue to change the default directory to WW2 missc
4. opened the saved game and viola! the graphics changed

It seems TOAW is loading the graphic set from the current default directory even for saved games.

Must be a problem with this somewhere
