More analysis latter. Nik was able to send 130 planes, including 75 torpedo bombers, in a single attack. Why did he achieve almost nothing???? Overall, there was a big imbalance between forces. I had 500 planes (plus the Betties/Nells) against 300 from Nik. Did the uncoordinated attacks made the difference again? Given the disproportion of forces, a Japanese victory was more or less certain, but a loopsided victory like that is strange....

Why do you consider the result to be strange? The Game always "rewards" the side with more planes in the air in a battle. The Japanese side had more fighters than the Allies in each of the air battles. Therefore, the Japanese won the air battles cleanly. The Game has always performed that way.

If I put 70 P-40Bs into the air against 30 Zeros, The P-40s will blow the Zeros from the sky. If I put 16 Spitfires into the air against those same 30 Zeros, the Zeros will wipe the Spits. That's just how the Game handles things.

That's why it is so critical to always have total air superiority over a battle, or not fight at all. And since fighter pilots don't get "tired" or "out of ammo" in air battles, You can't wear down a CAP of 100 planes with sequential, smaller attacks. (That's how it worked in PacWar, but GG changed it for UV and WitP.)

In the end, if the Allies want to stop 500 Japanese carrier planes, they have to find a way to put 700 planes in the air over that carrier fleet at one time. (I've got to think that something like 400 B-25s and 300 Corsairs is the way to go... [;)] )

Should the Game be this way? Well, that's another discussion...

Should an Allied player send any CVs into battle before 1944? Well, that's even more of a discussion for a different venue.

In any event, congrats and enjoy - you played it well and you won a hard fought battle.

-I agree with you that a Japanese victory was expected, but I´m surprised with the extent of my victory. The enemy was able to place about 80 bombers over my fleet (those who survived CAP), but only 4 hits were achieved. Disruptionj of enemy attack by the huge CAP/AA is an issue...

-Japanese Navy leadership had a meeting to analyze the battle results. Yamamoto was euphoric (and drank a lot of sake) and told the officials that the war was lost by colonialists. However, Tanaka noticed that, while Japanese losses were minimal, lots of ships were badly damaged and that the continued bombardment of Lunga wasn´t feasible. Yamaguchi also noticed that the quality of Japanese carriers aircrews suffered a blow due to excessive losses and lack of trained replacements. Furthermore, Kaga and Hosho suffered moderate damage and would be unable to fight in the next months. Admiral Abe also was worried with the big reinforcements that the USN was able to bring to Guadalcanal. "Recon planes are noticing an almost daily expansion of airfield facilities and lots of air activity".

-Our Ki-15´s are reporting a fantastic expansion of Lae instalations. They noticed a paved runway and lots of new instalations. Seems to be like a city, they told the Shortlands commander. In a series of agressive sweeps, Zeroes from Shortlands destroyed 24 F4F´s over Guadalcanal. Seven Zeroes were lost. Hurricanes from Pagan were also targeted for sweeps.Overall, the enemy lost 41 planes against 12 Japanese.

No propaganda.......we got stomped, but we gained valuable real estate. I'm buying up more banana stock as we speak. I'll be rolling in dough soon.....and bananas.

(and on the bright side...the recent battle was very useful for the upcoming mod update.)

-Nik´s new update is surrounded by secrecy, however, I will openly lobby him for the Ki-44II armed with 40mm guns as a compensation for changes in the Uber Tojo in v5.3

The next step

Post by Bombur »

-The Guadalcanal campaign entered a new phase, as allied bombers, many of them based in Guadalcanal, started to pound Shortlands forcing Yamamoto to admitt that the stunning Japanese victory in the sea didn´t prevent the US from gaining a firm foothold in the Solomons islands. The enemy raids caused little damage to Shortlands instalations, but 11 Betties and 4 Tojos were destroyed in the ground. The enemy lost 14 heavy bombers, half of them to A2A. More five Zeroes were lost due to combat and non combat causes. A naval bombardment on Guadalcanal caused heavy casualties on enemy troops but the airfield wasn´t hit. A new interceptor in on the way in order to deal with enemy heavy bombers

-The air campaign over Shortlands goes on. Ki-45´s were commited again with the usual disastrous results, but this time they shot down 3 P-38´s for 15 losses....[:D]. Another 7 Tojos and 10 Zeroes lost over Shortlands. The enemy, however, paid again a heavy price, as 24 P-38´s, 4 B-24´s, 3 B-17´s and 3 Marauders were lost.

Endgame

Post by Bombur »

-Game over, the evil colonialists were defeated by a 2,8:1 margin, with the yankee carrier force being destroyed two times.... however, the Japanese economy was in relatively bad shape, the enemy gained a firm foothold in the Salomons and no less than 3 divisions are surrounded in Mandalay. We decided to declare the game a draw and moved to Nik mod 8.0, Great campaign
