Mouse button reversed?

Post by JudgeDredd »

Whilst I am map making I thought I would point this out - Dave - you are a bunch of buggers

People were calling for the mouse button to be reversed in the game and so you put a button in. Very helpful and I, for one, like to roll the mouse button forward and ZOOM IN...however, you've only left it out of the bloody map maker - and therefore I keep bloody zooming out when I am trying to zoom in (I have the mouse button reversed option ticked in game so I push the button forward and back to zoom in and out repsectively).

It's right blooming confusing...especially when I go back into my game and I forget to not reverse what I was doing because the reverse option is ticked!! [&:]

I'm with Judge Dredd on this one. He is the Law after all.
And don't forget to issue a patch to include it in HTTR as well. [;)]

The first sentence is serious. And configurable mouse wheel support wold be nice in the ScenMaker as well.

Thanks,

JeF.

I am with the Judge on this one.

And why doesn't the "reverse mouse zoom" box stay checked? I have to reset this every time I load the game!

I have a hard time understanding why game designers in general almost always get this backwards. It is the same with "mouse look" mode in rpg games where pushing the mouse forward defaults to looking up and pulling the mouse backwards defaults to looking down. It is completely counterintuitive. In RL to look down you tilt your head forward, not backward. To look up you tilt your head backward, not forward. Every last RPG ever published has it exactly backwards and forces you to go into the options settings to choose "reverse mouse look" to get it to reflect real physics.

I guess the logic being used by designers with regard to zoom is that in order to get closer to the map you "pull" the map toward you by scrolling the mouse wheel backwards, but this, just like with mouse look in rpgs is backwrds of the reality of physics. If the map is on a table top and you want to get closer to the map to increase it's visual size, you don't lift the table top off the floor bringiong it closer to your face, you move your face closer to the table top, thus the reason why scrolling the mouse forward to zoom in is the intuitive solution and scrolling the mouse wheeel backwrds to zoom in, which is the default, is completely counterintuitive.

My option stays "sticky"...however, I have noticed that some others do not...and I'm quite sure they used to...for example, I noticed the other day that the grid comes on...even though I switch it off...and it definitely used to be off...same for surrendered units, iirc.

I think there is some issues with the stickies.

Come on Panther...I'm no world beater at coding, but even I know how to load a program and read some values, be it from the registry, a text file or an ini file....[;)]

Still a great game though! [;)]

Ah stop your winging![;)] The sticky prefs have all been fixed in the patch. [:)]

As to Reverser mouse option in MM and SM. We ran out of time. That feature will have to wait till BFTB.

Re. Which is the correct method of zooming with the scroll wheel, well that does depend on perspective. We opted for the same methodology used in most GIS programs - ie you pull the objects towards you hence scrolling back zooms in. I realise that some other games and some paint programs work the other way - ie you fly into the image and hence you scroll forward to zoom in. It's just a preference of perspective, not a case of being right or wrong. Each to their own and that is why we have provided the option.

Nice one. And agree totally - everyone has a different idea of how to scroll in and out...hence the option...which I found a nice touch.
