Yeah I haven't had any problems either, although I'm not nearly as far as you are. The only shortage I've had (other than no infantry for the BFs) was getting a tank division at low strength (even though I had enough tanks to field the division). As you said, it turned out well because it only cost me 97 PPs to transfer it. [:D]

I would watch for a move towatds Java or Malaya if I was you John. He seems to be avoiding the main PI area and working himself towards that side of the map. Plus he will be able to advance all the way up under a cloud of land based a/c.

That places him astride you supply lines and cuts you off. I would also bet that Singapore has a nice repair base with large airfield. I would be very cautious about that.

Didn't say you were whining about anything, sorry if that's how it came accross. That kind of result was a big issue when the game first came out. As an allied player those results led to a train of thinking along the lines of . . . why throw away force z? to why not save it? to why reinforce singapore? to why not evacuate it? to, eventually, why defend any forward areas? to run away/soiling your armor (otherwise known as Sir Robin).

Was wondering PzB, did those reinforcements drain your manpower/weapon pools?

A not so good day: We were a bit unlucky with the presence of enemy carriers returning
from the Balikpapan mission. They hit one of our cruiser squadrons and I had to scuttle
one ca while another one may sink. 3 destroyers were also hit, but should make it.
Quite amazing that one ca got away without a scratch!

Still, the harassment raids will continue.

Numerous air units arrived today including 2x27 Betty, 3x36 Oscar II, 2x27 Irving night fighters
and 1x48 George. Avg exp is in their 40s. Not great, in need of 2-3 months training before going to
the front. Still, a good reserve force.

A reserve division was loaded at Bombay today, it will go to Malaya/Burma region.
Tomorrow a crack division will unload over Singakwang on NW Borneo together with an engineer rgt and
a coastal defense unit. I will shuffel these force around a bit, one regiment Palembang and Toboali perhaps.
Were should I put the coastal guns, Singapore...Palembang?

Hopefully we can fight a holding action on this part of the front while larger reinforcements closes of
the 'Inner Citadel'. Luzon, Formosa, Okinama are being turned into veritable fortresses with mines, heavy
guns and good troops.

Hi Scott, long time no see! How's life treating you, out of the Army?
Thx for the advice, as you can see of my recent posts I'm trying to take as many
precautions that are prudent without weakening the PI/Formosa region.

You still playing? We stopped a rather good game due to a real war [;)]

Anarchy - my pool looks ok, but the reinforcement list for the late war will
produce quite a few 'skeleton' units. This is ok as I can use them as mobile
combat groups and move them from place to place. Guess I'll need lots of troops
when the Red Bear awakens in a years time..that will be a lot of fun [8|] Already
busy building a solid line, even though it means sacrificing most of Kwantung.

Well AJ, I was kinda fond of those cruisers...still got all of the Furutaka class.
Everywhere there are untouchable enemy carriers, the 5 hexes around them will be
death zone.

But well they died a little "better" than their historical counterparts some hex more in the north near Palawan

Hey John, I have been reading this AAR alot. I am still in the guard, but home since Dec. I have not had time to play since June. I got married then and then we got hit with a heat wave and I have been swamped with work so my 3 games have been on hold for awhile yet. I may be up for a re-start using Nik's new mod once things get back in order around here.
 
 I know you are trying to strengthen everything, but I think he is very gun shy about the PI and that area. Since he is low on pilots and hellcats, he is looking for land based coverage. I would pull a div and brigade from the PI and place them in Singapore. Say, 2-3 Divisions there and a brigade or 2 farther up at say Georgetown or Kuala Lampur as a reaction force to any upwards attacks. I would really watch for a paradrop north or Singapore if he goes after it. That would cut you off from supply. But you can guarantee he will hit Singapore with 8+ divisions if he goes after it. He seems to be using 4-8 divisions in just about every invasion. So he will bring the kitchen sink if he goes after Singapore. But I would plan on that move and a Java move too.

palembang can be bombed into oblivion without even seeing any allied soldier
with instalation destroyed or not and with singapore in allied hands it can only wait and die
there are too many bases around which can help allies in their march around borneo

question is singapore so important ?
answer is yes - port and its facilities are needed on this assault axis
yes as without singapore you can't consider java and sumatra cut off
second if singapore is important how allies can grab it with smallest effort ?
IMO question is extremaly similar to japanese dilema in early days
best way is to grab mersing / johore baru or both
johore baru is banned in most opening turns but it is best and now allies have free hand to choose - there is river forcing shock attack but assaulting singapore itself which obviously have strongest  garrison and max forts in the area is lower probability - taking johore baru cuts off singapore from any reinforcements from malaya/burma - and i expect there are troops that can be used as reinforcements in other bases
mersing is almost as good as it is very close to johore - 3-4 days by road and as it is marginally lower importance it can be weaker than Johore
taking mersing and building there air base was my key to blitzing Malayas in my PBEM against Raverdave - johore fall fast and singapore was cut off few days after landing
so my bet Johore baru first mersing second singapore third for CD

If, for example, your defence force for Singapore was to comprise 6 divisions you could just allocate 1.33 divisions to Mersing and 2.33 to each ofSingapore and Johore Bahru.
 
That way you have enough to hold at Mersing for long enough that reinforcements from Johore can arrive to bolster things and if the enemy goes for Singers direct you have more than enough to hold.
 
If the enemy goes for Johore Bahru you can just re-unite the two 1/3rd divisions from mersing and Singers  and march in an extra division from Singers and end up with 4 division-equivalents at Johore.
 
In each case you are guarding strongly against the two most dangerous threats ( direct invasion of Singers or Johore) strongly and yet have the dispersed strength to have enough to defeat an 8-division assault in place by the time all his troops are ashore and he is ready to begin seriously attacking.
 
FWIW I would agree that Java/Sumatra are red herrings. He has no need to invade them. So long as he kills the AKs coming and leaving they are an irrelevance.
 
If I were Andy I'd go for Northern Borneo then Taan Island and then Formosa as that would prevent you from bringing sizable land forces to bear on any of my invasions and would give me lots of airbases from which to cover my invasion TFs as I inched east (plus some of the bases on those islands are perfect for B29s)...
 
OTOH I don't think Andy is, in the slightest, into deep operations and rendering irrelevant large parts of the enemy force. He strikes me as much more of a " see enemy concentration, hit enemy concentration with big hammer" kind of guy... I think though that the forces you have in the Phillipines have scared him off and so I think we need to look farther west. Farther west is either Borneo ( North), Singers or DEI. It won't be DEI because there's no need to go there so that leaves either northern Borneo or DEI... If you've got 10 divisions why would you bolster Phillipines more? He has already shown he is drifting westward since I think what he sees there scares him. No, reinforce northern Borneo, Taan etc and Malaysia/Saigon/Camranh. A division each into Kuching and Singakawang, a couple of divisions into Taan island and 1 more each into Saigon and Camranh would leave 4 divisions to bolster Malaysia.
 
If I'm wrong and he goes for Northern Borneo or Taan then these dispositions should allow you to fly a lot of troops in to bolster the bases there and if he commits to Singers you should be able to mass 6 divisions there with 2 more in deep reserve ( Camranh and Saigon). That ought to be enough to put a crimp in his plans whichever western route he takes. The only thing this plan doesn't reinforce heavily is DEI since an attack into DEI is completely unnecessary for the Allies at this stage... Perhaps also fly troops and materiel out of DEI to reinforce western and northern borneo and Singers?

just a few thoughts from Imperial Pauk family[;)]

1. we are not sure that northern Borneo (Kuching, Brunei) is worth to be defended heavily. I mean, you've already lost majoritiy of the Brunei's oil, right? So fall of Brunei wont hurt your industrial potential a lot.
IIRC, you and Andy have agreement on not using B-29 in AFs less than size 5 - Kuching and Borneo can't be expanded to lvl 5 so you are not losing much there as well.

Of, course, once when he take northern Borneo he will control South Chinese sea but not that you will have many transports on the route to your oil fields.

So, i would live some forces just to disrupt eventual enemy invasion on northern Borneo and disable his units as much as i can and concentrate on Palembang- Singapore defencive line. I would defend Batavia as well - as long you have Sinkawang-Batava line you can hope for smuggling some more precious oil to Japan....

2. As others pointed Singapore is jewel which must be defended at any cost. I'm not talking about shipyard etc... by the time when Andy closes to Malaya/Sumatra shipyards won't be important[8|] any more.

Singapore and nearby bases controlling the whole area and your troops on Java and Sumatra would be lost forever.

If you are short with ground forces, you may move one or two division from Formosa. This will make you quite exposed i know, but you can react and transfer division or two from the Marians (but i would leave those divs on Marians for now, you never know with Andy!).

All CD guns are good for is hitting bombardment TF IMO. I would be much more concerned about a bombardment raid on Palembang than on Singapore. That was my logic.

If Andy really intends to head that way, then I lean to pauk's theory that northern Borneo is the next target. Losing Kuching will pretty much stop the flow of any oil from SRA. I strongly doubt Singapore would be invaded.

 I too discounted him invading Singapore, but then I started really thinking about what I would do in his shoes etc. It is very audacious, gives him command of the whole area, makes alot of bases untenable due to B29 strikes, and last but most important........gives him a large forward repair yard!!!!! Right now, he has to sail a very long ways to any repair yard. His system damage is probably pretty high right now on alot of combat ships (8-15 I would think).
 
 The repair yard is what I would go after. Plus it being a non malarial base makes it a very nice rest area for combat troops, a/c etc. Coupled with a large air base and that base would be high on my list. Very high.
 
 I really think Andy is put off by the amount of troops and defenses of the PI and plans to try and make it one huge POW camp. Cut it off and let it starve. So he is moving west and then north to Malaya. Once he has taken that area, I would start watching Northern Japan very closely. I doubt he will make that move, but he might. I would go after Taan, and then Formosa myself. Maybe even Hong Kong just to mess with your training ground for you a/c. Because from there, I could field B29's or other heavy bombers and start taking out any base you mass a/c at.

A surface fleet intercepted an enormous 54 ship carrier fleet and torpedoed
the battleship Richelie, damaged several destroyers..and even landed a 5" shell
on the USS Ticonderoga!

Our own losses: 1 destroyer sunk, 3 damaged (1 may sink).

Off PNG enemy Helldivers and B-24s also punished a light cruisers, but she should make it.
Even more incredible: The heavy cruiser Takao may survive. With 99 sys damage her elite
crew has gotten fires under control [&o]

Another shock attack at Noemfoor lowers forts to lvl 6 and we decide to reinforce the garrison
to drive Andy crazy [;)]
