First steps

Post by british exil »

I'm planning my first big game.

Not quite sure how to go about it.
Should I try to form a beachhead with inf? Then follow up with eng? Building a port and airfield?
Or should I concentrate my efforts on gaining air superiority? Then take the landstake?
Should I send supplies to a place where i will intend to land troops or is there a danger of the supplies falling into enemy hand?

I have only played the little campaigns? With cheating - no fog of war.
But now I want to play the real thing[:D]
But while I'm asking all these questions I wonder if I should try at all.[X(]

But still not quite sure where to really start.
I'm sure that there are plenty of veterans out there who would be glad to show a newbie how to do things.[&o]
Maybe there is or was a thread that gives all the answers.

I'll keep an outlook for all the help I can get.
Thanks in advance

Depends on if you're playing Japan or Allies, PBEM or Ai and which scenario.

What to do? that's the beauty of the game.

I'd just start playing, and see how concentrating on airpower versus land bases versus sea control works out for you. What you will learn quickly is that they are all interrelated, and you always need lots more of everything.

So try getting a new base (either by conquest or construction), and then find out what's the best way to hold it, and then exploit it. The AI will be only to happy to tutor you with the use of the stick, not the carrot.

have fun, and remember, in UV, unlike the real world, you only lose pixels, and you can restart and try again.

heck---go for the real thing, early May 1942 thru Dec 1943. Nothing like getting whupped in the Coral Sea right off to get you to lose your initiative, and be forced to react to your opponent's OODA loop...

I have played for a while now and I have learnt some important things. First. take your time. Be sure that all units has got an appropriate order every singel turn. Have an object or two as your strategic goal at all times. And, read the manual.

Good luck!

PLAY THE GAME IN PBEM THERE IS NO SUBSTITUTE....
Learn the intracasies of the game as there are many..
When using your aircraft watch fatiuge levels as you will lose
more pilots too fatiuge from op losses than anything else...
also fly minimal aircrews in thunderstorms as you will lose them
rather quickly from op losses..
Rotate aircrews in and out of the front line constantly too the rear
bases too rest and recoup, this also allows for the gaining of experience
while replacing fewer pilots too op losses and the enemy...
fly naval search constantly too give you the advantage of seing your enemy
at least part of the time and Recon bases too allow for more acurate bombing runs.
when attacking bases bomb the airfields and then the ports when damage levels reach
100% shift some bombers too hitting troops, keep the airfield too 100% then when
your getting close too invade say a few days or a week then hit the troops hard and
allow there engineers too repair the ports and airfields partially for you..
when enemy troops take a base and you can bomb it keep hitting the port and airfield
as the damage too those facilities take precedence over them building fortifications,
they will suck up supply from constantly repairing instead of building plus there troops will acrue fatiuge especially from malaria if in a malaria zone.(keep them weak)
As the allies early on in the long campaign train up your carrier pilots before engaging
in the Japanese and definately fill out your aircrews and retrofit your carriers before
a CV TO CV engagement, if not you will be bringing in a carrier force with no substantial AAA, a low plane count, pilots with 55% experience against IJN pilots in the high 70's.
Not much fun creating reefs of your carriers..
Pay attention too your cap levels, set them at 50% - 60% for your carriers and never
ever set your wildcats too training if you are out too sea or you will learn a valuable
lesson the hard way..
Learn too supply forward bases with fast transports especially if the bases are contested
and learn too arrive at night too avoid getting gutted by aircraft.
Put up a fight for Gilli Gilli but don't jeapordize too much this is only a stalling
tactic too buy you time same with Moresby..
Quadalcanal is tough against a determined apponant but remember that the japanese have too commit too one side or the other if he commits too taking Moresby then you pressure
quadalcanal and vice a versa but remember too adjust too your apponant as the game shifts..

If playing as the japanese you want too exploit as fast and as far as possible as time is
not on your side, by 1943 you will be as far as you are gonna get unless you destroyed
the allies too the point of capturing Noumea or Brisabane.

Ask lots of questions from the guys here as we stroll back thru the forums from time to time too help..

consideration all of the tendencies of the mind
and soul in combination towards the business of

Yeah! What he said!

And, as the alllies, never, ever, send carriers early on north of the PM/ GG/ Lunga line, or the LBA will eat your carriers alive.

Similarly, try to have your LBA harass/rough up his carriers (mainly by attriting and fatiguing his CAP) just before your escorted DBs and torpeckers hit him.

And always be the first to hit with carrier air; no where else is it more important to give rather than to receive!

Lots of help given.
Put alot of it  into action.
And it seems to be working[:D]

CV killed 80 jap planes last attack, so I must be doing sth right.
Now landed 43 Div and a few marines on Munga just got to convince the japs that they want to leave.

Just keep the tips coming.  Thanks
