FOW bug

Post by delatbabel »

(Previously posted in another thread, but I thought I'd highlight it here separately).

There is a bug playing Fog of War.

Your opponent can, at the start of his turn, copy the .psv file to a .sav file with a new name. Then he can open the .sav file, play his turn, then play your turn and view all of your units, production spiral, research, etc.

You may as well play with FOW off. There doesn't appear to be any fix to this because there is no restriction in the game from loading a PBEM saved game as a normal single or multi player game.

I wasn't aware of this and it's a good catch. Hopefully they'll fix it, in the sequel at least. But I'm not so pessimistic that I won't keep playing with FOW. I play with the assumption my opponent is not cheating until proven otherwise. [;)] I think most people are honest and want a good game - and I think FOW is essential to truly enjoy WAW.

I think it is important that everyone knows about the bug, whether anyone can be assumed to be cheating or not, I don't know. It's not like you can use it to replay your turn.

I like to save a copy of a PBEM game before I end my turn so I can review my units, plan strategy for the upcoming turns, etc, while I'm waiting for my opponent to have his turn and send me back the save.

What really needs to happen is that a PBEM game, once loaded, asks for all passwords (yours and your opponent's) and then lets you have access to the game at least while it's not your turn -- you wouldn't be able to move units or build things but it would at least give you some sit and think time between turns without having to exercise this sort of bug.

Again, not the sort of bug fix I'm prepared to pay money for. I prefer FOW on too, but basically this bug negates it.

I'll ask the programmer about it and see what can be done.
