Hell's Gate

A brand new campaign-based 3D tactical engine covering combat in World War II, from the developers at Koios Works. The first operation covered is the famous "Wintergewitter" or Winter Storm, a desperate attempt by Hoth's 57th Panzer Korps to break through to the encircled 6th Armee at Stalingrad and the Soviet counter-attack by 2nd Guards Army that drove them back.

Hell's Gate

Post by Prince of Eckmühl »

Boy, was this a handfull!

After some aerial recon of the area ;) , I did a lot better, but it was still tough. Laryngoscope put in a little surprise at the end of the trail. I won't spoil it for the rest of you, but, I will provide you with some play tips:

1) Follow the path of least resistance. The Stuka strike at the beginning of the game will create a weakness in the Soviet position.

2) Concentrate your forces and then carefully approach the depleted enemy positions to the East.

3) When you've secured the South Eastern quandrant of the map, line up the Tigers and move North.

4) As you execute this leg of the advance, apply liberal quantities of HE, and then CAREFULLY occupy the VP areas with your infantry.

The whole experience will be a little nerve-wracking, but it's fun.

Good luck!

Guys, glad you are enjoying it [:D]

PoE I wrote some designer notes which explain the scenario in a little more detail. I don't think they made it out with the latest patch.

I have included them here. They contain spoilers so don't read until after you have played.

Hi 'Scope,

The readme did find itself into the patch. It's located in the "manuals" folder. It's no spoiler, imo. I also enjoyed the "aftermath" section when the scenario was concluded, nice touch there.

A question, though...

What's the difference between the "campaign" and "scenario" versions of the game?

For Hell's Gate, there's no real difference in the battle itself. By making it a campaign, Laryngoscope could define a graphical briefing screen and an end of campaign aftermath message. The result is a nicer presentation than just a set battle, but it plays the same way in terms of the actual map, units and battle. It also allows for him to easily expand the campaign should he desire in the future, to more than the initial scenario.
