Think I've spent enough time playing the AI

Post by wneumann »

Hello y'all. I've had the game for a few months and ready to try it out with a live opponent. I've played one game - scenario 015 War in the Pacific as the Allies vs Japanese AI thru June '43. Kept the game basically (plain vanilla) historical other than turning off the Japanese (AI) submarine doctrine restriction and no surprise attack on 12/7/41 (so I would have a chance to test drive the Arizona before losing it).

The only stipulation I have is that (with my current experience level at the game) I'll need to play the Allies - I haven't looked at or touched the Japanese at all so I have no idea how that side of the conflict works in this game system.

I saw the thread re: house rules. Seem to be pretty reasonable overall. Actually followed them pretty closely in my game vs the AI. Should be no problem negotiating on that subject...

I wouldn't mind picking up a second game.

My only reservations would be that I would prefer to play the CHS with NikMod style changes (I have scenario 158 loaded).

I will not operate Japanese units outside of their command zone (no Southern Area Army troops invading Port Moresby e.g.) and would prefer it if the Allied player did the same.

I will (as the Japanese player) use the historical opening.

I suggest the following settings: PDU "off", Allied Damage Control "on", Allied Sub Doc "off", Japanese sub doctrine "on".

I would prefer it if 4E bombers on Naval attack operated at no less than 10,000 feet.

I would like the game to be played in a historical spirit.

If you're interested PM me.

Sounds good to me. Couple dumb questions though...

1) About the scenario. I found the CHS site and located the scenario (158). Do I need a copy of scenario 158 (and other required software) nstalled on my PC in order to play it? Looks as if I would have to download and install some map versions (Andrew Brown's) as a prereq to putting in the scenario if this is necessary. Up to now I was unaware this all existed. Any info would be appreciated.

2) When you speak of command zones, are you referring to the HQ under which a unit operated and the historical area in which that HQ operated. Or is there something in the CHS scenarios where command zones are spelled out in a little more detail. Also, how does this affect expending PP to change a unit's assigned HQ (and presumably the geographic area where it may operate)? I had used PP in my game vs the AI to change assigned HQ of units - i.e. evacuating units mainly from ABDA and the Phillipines (most of these ended up in South or SW Pacific, depending on which HQ was most suited to a particular unit), also transferred several units from the US west coast to South or SW Pacific for redeployment to these areas.

3) Historic opening is fine.

4) The settings you suggested are fine too. Except for Japanese sub doctrine, I was using all these in my game vs the AI.

5) Didn't think 4E bombers were worth a ___ for naval attack (at sea). Though in my game I used them to finish off the Kaga and Soryu in port after the AI limped them into Rabaul and decided to hole them up in there.

6) I agree with historical spirit.

I apologize for being slightly ignorant on some issues, but I guess it better that I asked now than after the game is started.

Hello wneumann,

welcome to the forum! [:)]

Here's the installation guide for CHS:

http://www.bur.st/~akbrown/witp/CHS_documentation/CHS_install.html

[align=left]It's a lengthy process (due to the fact that the game cannot handle different mods at the same time), but well worth it. Should you run into problems just ask in the support or scenario forum.

Jolly Pillager - Still working on getting my end set up to start playing. ran into a little problem. I started a string in the Scenario forum "CHS game art missing" to find out what I can do to resolve it. I'm guessing (and probably correctly that some of the game art got lost somewhere or an update for the game art didn't come across properly.

No problem...I think that there is an art update package available to fix the "pink box" issue that was around...not sure if there would be missing art without it though?

One other thing I messed up the first time I installed it is that the zipped scenario file has to be extracted into the scenario folder on the hard drive. If this is not done then no units will be in the game [:-]

I have everything ready to start playing. From what I saw in the game manual, it looks like the Japanese player goes first in PBEM.
