Fomations support levels determination

I'm curious to know how the program determines the formations support levels. I know it's based on counter colors but how is it done actually? do each counter color-type have a specific code or something the program uses to determine which can coordinate with another? [8D]

Noone then? JAM? Ralph? I suppose if I replace a counter template with another the program will still recognize the older color for formation support level right?

My guess is that it works based on the graphic file names, so altering the files without renaming them should not induce any change in formation support levels.
