Atmospheric battles

Well, this is more of an idea than a mod. Why can't capital ships enter the atmosphere? It's been done in many scifi shows/movies. Perhaps pose some sort of limitations, like shields are less effective and they lose manueverability. I just think it would be pretty damn cool.

I have no intention of modding this, I wouldn't even no where to start.

There needs to be a suggestions forum...

Well as far as Starshatter's technology goes, the only thing to make things fly over distances efficiently is to give em wings. Realisticaly, it would be a rather colossal task to keep hundreds of tons aloft, unless the capships are aerodynamic and have massive wings.
That said, you could easily make floating capital ships using the SDK, you'd just have to skirt around some rules, first, your capital ship would actually have to be an LCA, so that it could enter the atmosphere and hover, however that means if anything of any considerable size collides with it, it's going down.
So where's the obligatory game video with topgun music?
