Ferries at Tempe Gorge Crisis and other scenarios

Post by Mr. Personality »

I played (and really enjoyed) the Tempe Gorge Scenario yesterday as the Allies. My guys successfully blew both the road and rail bridges. However, there are numerous ferries on either side of the two bridges. As anyone who has played the scenario as the Allies know, the Germans were slowed, but not stopped by the lack of bridges.

My real life experience with ferries is very limited. On a few occasions, I've taken passenger and/or vehicle ferries. However, I'm sure that the 1940-era ferries used by combat forces aren't anything like the ferries I've been on. I'd be interested in any descriptions of what ferries of the day were like, and whether they could transport all classes of vehicles and equipment. I also assume their capacity in terms of people or vehicles per hour was limited versus road/rail bridges. Another aspect that interests me is how easy they were to destroy and then rebuild. Finally, if anyone could point me towards pictures on the web, I'd really appreciate that too!

Thanks in advance!

In my mind the ferry-points in COTA consists mainly of rather crude civilian or military cable ferries. The picures below are contemporary but from other corners of the world.

Thanks Pergite! I did a Google image search and didn't come up with much. Here's the best of the lot:

Allied ferry crossing

I can't tell if this one is a ferry or not, but it came up in a search for the ferries...

Ferry?

And finally, from the present day, here's a site with a handful of pictures from the river and surrounding area from the Polish drop near Driel/Arnhem.

Also in some cases within COTA they were actually fords rather than ferries.

How can you determine when it's a ford or when its a ferry?  Is there some notation in the game??
