BUG report: still a navigation problem

Post by FreekS »

Hi I'm running ANW3.7.1.

I was testing my Nordkapp scenario (for PDB 6.4.9) which I've made for ANW (I think it would be a nice MP scen), but only released to 3.6.3 because of a navigator issue.
A small group (2 ships) navigates right to left on ASuW patrol misison through the Norwegian Fjords. Patrol zones are plenty big and random (though other types give same problem). The ships fail to navigate and get stuck. The Group symbol (with two patrolling helo's) moves forward but the ships remain stuck in fjord. In 3.6.3 there is no problem.

I've run this twice in the SE; once with the slider: " accuracy/speed (calculaton interval)" to the right ("high/slow"), which results in the nav problem decribed and once with the slider to the left ("low/fast") in which case the ships navigate normally through the Fjords.

Below is a screenshot in two windows; top window show group mode, bottom window shows the two ships in the group in unit mode. The group is moving right to left. It shows that the group symbol has moved far ahead of the ships and while the ships show a course plotted by the navigator and a speed; both ships have been stuck in that spot for hours. On other runs sometimes one gets stuck

I'm being very carefull to release new scens in ANW only after extensive testing in ANW. For Katyusha I found a similar issue with aircraft not navigating around nav-zones in the 'slider right' mode but I managed to circumvent it by changing the nav-zones

I've got to agree that this presents a major problem.  The game should perform in a relatively similar manner whether or not the Accuracy / Speed slider is on Low / High or High / Low.

The fact that some programmed missions fail to execute at all while the game is on one setting as opposed to another is troubling.

Hmmmm,

I'll be testing this one over the next couple of days.

Thanks for the input Freek, Hermann.

Jeff,

I saw a similar effect of the slider position in a test variant of Katyusha. In it with slider right planes took off and circled their own base, and with slider left they proceeded to their target (specific groundstrike targets in all cases). I could circumvent these by moving nav-zones (and the base) untill I found a position from which the mission would work in both positions of the slider. I then renamed the base to a base that in RL is close to that posit! [:)]. You can download that testscen from:

SZO forums- scenario's under construction

Sample file added for PlayersDB 6.4.9 at StrategyZoneOnline

1) Run file in SE 3.7.1 from Iranian side and have the slider on Low/Fast setting
2) Turn on Show All
3) Aircraft can been seen to launch from Ramon and fly off on their missions.

2nd Test:

A) Re-run file in SE 3.7.1 with slider on High/Slow setting.
B) Watch a/c take off and loiter over base; unable to complete missions.

Hey guys,

I've done some testing on this issue and have forwarded a bug report on it to Mantis.

As a builder of scenes also, I have had high hopes for the Accuracy/Speed slider feature from the beginning. Trying to test scenes as you build them, looking for expected behaviors is the most tedious part of the process. Anything to speed that up is an advantage. Faster is very often better as we sometimes are just looking at the overall response from the AI, and then can go back and tweak individual engagements.

After several conversations with the coder who wrote this, I pretty much have set my slider to the far right, which IIRC gives you one calculation cycle every second of game time at the 1:1 setting.

I am not sure why any other setting would have an effect on the AI's ability to execute missions, so I have passed it along.

Thanks once again for your input.
