This the May '42 campaign. Stock scenario.



Initial situation:

Begining of May. The SRA has been conquered. The imperial Japanese command is contemplating its next steps towards world domination.
However a quick look at the situation shows it's an awful mess. Things need to be sorted out.

Army:
4 main zones:
- Home islands 4 divisions of infantry Guards infantry brigade various support units
- Kwangtung area: 15 divisions a few brigades,a lot of artillery and engineers
- China: 26 divisions 20 brigades a few smaller units artillery armor and engineers.
- rest of the world. Burma 4 divisions SRA/Pacific 8 divisions 6 brigades over 50 naval infantry units most of the understrength various support units.

In thePacific The divisions are located in the Philipines 2 Java 4 Indochina 1 and Sumatra 1.

The other units are still in their starting positions except for some base forces in the SRA and some navy units inthe newly conquered Pacific islands.

Fleet:
The bulk of the Fleet is making a victory parade in Tokyo bay. 3 carriers in Truk one in Kwajalein.

Transports are scattered all other the place with many tankers in the Pacific and very few near the oil center.

Industry:
I have some reserves but many HI centers will run short before I can bring resources in.

Initial strategy.

The army will be organised into 4 division armies.
This makes
1 Home Islands army.
4 Kwangtung area armies
7 China armies
1 Burma area army
2 SRA/Pacific armies.

2 brigades are assigned to the Burma area army.
the other 4 SRA army will make the Pacific special army

In China the various brigades will remain independant.

I'm 3 divisions short so far.


Here are the plans:
home islands: nothing special so far.
Kwangtung: free some artillery and engineers to other theatres.
China: I'm planning an offensive in Northern China. I will draw some brigades to reinforce Burma and the Pacific.

Burma. I'm going to set up a defensive line. I willnot recieve any major unit as a reinforcement before several months.

SRA/Pacific.
My top priority is to take Port Moresby. So the two armies will be assigned to this task with thefleet committed in support.
The Pacific special army will prepare offensives against Central Pacific islands. After the fall of PM I will consider further operations.

The naval infantry units will beused as light garrisons accross ou perimeter. A few unitswill be moved to China for Garrison duty in ports to free army units.

The First week was used to move ships aircraft and troops around.
Army air force will operate mainly in China for the moment. The pilots will undergo training before new modelaircraft come into production.
 
The navy air force will concentrate on the support of operations in PNG. No combats occured. An american sub was spotted and succesfully attacked by an ASW TF off Shortlands.
 
Transports have been rushed to the SRA to bring resourcesto my starving factories. I've fiddled with the industry.
I've halted most aircraft production except for the zero the Betty and a few models. Carriers were accelerated while the construction of other ships has been suspended. A number of other changes have been made. I won't go into the details.
 
Most fighter groups have been upgraded either to Zero or Oscar. I've stopped the Production of the Oscar as I have over 1000 Nates and Oscars into the pool. Tojo and Tony will enter production in August and I'm planning to use mainly zeroes till then.
 
The fleet has recieved orders to move to Truk. The carriers are organized into 2 air combat task forces. the two CVEs are left behind. The Zuikaku and Shokaku with the Two CVLs that started in the Pacific and the rest of the carriers coming from Tokyo.
 
Naval aircraft are assembled in Truk.

On 05/08 allied transports are spotted in PM.
The IJN air force is alerted and plans an attack.
3 zero daitai and a Chutai are moved to Lae. The rest of the naval aire force gathers in Rabaul.
an other 90 zero 90 nells and 90 Betties.
 
The carriers are ordered to move to Rabaul. Just in case.
The sweep from Lae did not take off as I forgot to assign the target[:(]
The main strike hit PM but missed the transports.
My fighters caused 2:1losses to the CAP but the day costme 17 zeroes. 25 kittyhawk and P40E were shot down as well as a bunch of wirraways.
 
I need to start thinking about setting up my training program. [8|]

On 05/09 Enemy transports are still in PM.This time The Lae sweep moves in and hammers the CAP. A P39 group has been deployed as reinforcement and it is slaughtered.The main strike from Rabaul hits the airfield and the port but misses the transports. A betty Daitai then moves in unescorted. Fortunately by that time the allied CAP ismuch reduced and only 5 bombers are lost.
 
Then comes the last strike wich at least hits a troop loaded AK and a MSW sinking both.
 
The carriers have been moving towards Rabaul. The Zuikaku TF has recieved orders to make a full speed run andshouldbein a position to launch against PM tomorrow. Hopefully I will catch those transports.

My naval bombers struck PM on 05/10 but transports had vanished. There was no CAP and 15 allied fighters, Kittys ans P40E, were destroyed on the ground so that was a good day.

On the next 2 days weather was bad everywhere. Thunderstorms all over the place. So my airforce did rest as I don't want to suffer needles operational losses.

Mycarriers are now lurking in the Coral sea looking for trouble.

On the 12th some transports were spotted in PM but my aircraft were grounded by the bad weather. Let's see if I can catch them on the 13th. It looks like the allies are reinforcing PM.

In China an army starts to besiege Yenen and a second army is on its way. I'm short of supplies and support so I do not attack for the moment.

I'm concentrating the whole Kwangtung force in Jehol where I will sort things out. I will send some artillery and some combat engineers to China while construction engineers and AAunits willbe sent to Burma and the Pacific. I need the PPs for that. However I'm already assigning some objectives so that the units will start prepping.

Well my carriers went lurking for trouble intheCoral Sea and and they got it.
A PM bound fast transport TF loaded with troops from the 7th Australian division came within range. [:D]
5 allied CLs sunk and a few Australian troops drowned. An other two AKs were sunk in PM

In China there is some movement outside Homan. In Yenen my forces are getting in position forthe assault. Still have 3 divisions one army HQ and North China HQ on their way. I'm bombarding for the moment.

In the Pacific AKs and TKs arestarting to load ressources. 18000 oil landed in Singapore.
I have 100 troop loaded AP. An other 150 AP on their way.

The naval infantry is getting some replacement at a fast rate. Already over 200 squads replaced. They should be operational soon.

Two days of rain.
 
My carriers are moving back to Rabaul to refuel. Troops loading everywhere.
Tankers and AKs will soon bring oil to the home oil islands while the first convoy with fuel and supply will soon reach Truk.
By the end of the month my supply network should be up and running.
 
In China I'm bombarding Yennen. I will soon start bombing it with Sallies. There are 6 Chinese corps there. Probably between 1500 and 1800 assault value. I should be able to start attacking in a few days.
 
I'm spotting some allied subs  in the Indian Ocean but I have nothing to attack them.

The attack on Yenen begins. One fort level is down. Two left. Two combat engineers and a heavy artillery brigade are on their way from the Kwangtung army.
 
My sallies were ambushed by an AVG squadron, 20 shot down:( They came in sentai by sentai to facilitatethe work of the CAP.
 
In the Pacific AKs and TKs are loading.
Some troop convoys are on the way to Truk. A naval guard  is moving to take Lunga. No more fuel in Rabaul.

Allied air offensive started on 05/25 in Burma.
Two groups of dive bombers from Kwangtung area army that started the game in Mandalay were flattened.
I left them there as I did not have political points available for them. About 40 aicraft have been destroyed onthe ground in two days. He's using P40Bs as escorts. I'm gonna LRCAP tomorrow as I want to attrit P40s as much as possible.
 
A small transport TF reached Rangoon and is loading resources and oil.
 
Two Chinese divisions have been spotted on the border.
 
In China, an assault on Yenen did not achieve anything. Losses were low though. About 2000 japanese against 1000 chinese.
2 engineer regiments and a heavy artillery brigade are on their way to give additional punch. some Chinese units are on their way to Yenen. I've Deployed 3 zero daitai to sweep  his AVG squadron. Air bombardment will then resume. I'm developing my airbases in the area.
 
Kwangtung Army is now assembled in Jehol. I will send some artillery Engineers and aviation units to China. Flak units will be sent to Burma. I want to send as much Flak as possible to Burma. They should have plenty of targets there.
 
A transport and a MSW were attacked in PM. Both were hit. the MSW was sunk.
 
One of my subs was sunk in Canton islands. 3 TFs have been spotted in the area. Most of my glenn carying subs are deployed nearby. The KB has been sent to investigate. My aim is to disrupt allied shipping towards Australia and, if possible, gobble a few transports and escorts.
 
A naval guard landed at Lunga and captured the base.
 
3 divisions and a bunch of support units are on their way to Truk. The 4 divisions from soerbaja will soon be loaded and will follow. Taan is waiting for some extra transports to lift the rest of the units there. Most of the Troops will soon be assembled in Truk. begining in June I will start setting up my perimeter.

Near Canton Island one ofthe enemy TFs turns out to be a heavily escorted convoy. 10DDs and several AKs have been identified. this has cost me 2 subs. I have lost contact but I have many subs in the area. KB should be within range in 3 days.

Divisions in Soerbaja are loading. I'm planning to attack PM in late June.
 
In china Reinforcements are moving to Yenen. My airforce is grounded because of thunderstorms.
 
MC is off one week so this gives me plenty of time to plot evil things.
 
A few notes about strategy:
I'm planning to keep on the offensive as long as possible to keep pressure on the allies and delay their offensive as long as possible.
 
My main objective is PM. Once and if I capture it I will attack his islands in the Central Pacific and push towards New Caledonia.
 
I will use my carriers to raid his communications and hopefully sink some convoys. It's too late to attack India by now.
Western Australia is a possibility but not before September '42.
 
I will reinforce Burma heavily. I have 6 large LCU there for the moment. This is not enough. I will first send artillery and engineers then some LCUs from China once I get enough PPs. There is little risk of British amphibious operations in the area before mid late '43.The main risk is a land offensive from India but it willhave to come through the jungle. So I will have some time to react.
 
Meanwhile in the Pacific myfleet will hopefully hold the allies at bay till mid '43. By that timemy land defenses will hopefully have had time to to settle. I have 12 large LCU and about 50 small units.
 
By late '42 the allies should have 30 divisions worth of trops in the whole Pacific area and about 20 divisions worth in India.
I should be able to handle that.

I organize the KB in 2 equal TF. Each will have 4 CV 2CVL 1 Yamato class BB 2 CS 6 CA 8 DD.
The Yamatos 1CV and 1 CVL are still in the yards.
 
I will have to sort my DDs to select the most appropriate ones.
 
The CVE will be grouped with the AOs to form a replenishment task force. 
 
The Army AF stays in China so far. The navy fighters and bombers willcarry on the fighting in the pacific on their own.
Once I recieve Tojos and tonys Iwill use them as local CAP in the Pacific while the zeros will act as a mobile reserve force.
 
Navy transports are slowly getting mustered in Truk. I will use them as well as Emilys to bring reinforcements to attacked bases. Each base will recieve a garrison strong enough to delay the attackers allowing the transports to bring in the rear area reserve units.
 
The range of my aircraft gives me a lot of flexibility.
 
Army aircraft are assembled in Burma for the same purpose.
 
This does not mean I will neglect the defense of my forward bases but I hope I'll be able to seriously disrupt the first allied invasions.

Disappointment all over the map.
In the South Pacific the KB was in its final approach to strike enemy shipping around Pago Pago and was so far undetected.
The Captain of the newly arrived Junyo unaware of the fleet orders launched a strike against a minor american airfield, losing 2 kates in the process and wasting any chance for a surprise strike in the area.
 
I may manage to  get a few stragglers but I won't get much more from this raid.[:@]
 
Around PM A few isolated ships were not attacked by my naval bombers.
 
Against Yenen a massive sweep had been planned against the flying kittens but only an Oscar Sentai went in hopefully losing only 2 planes.
 
Finaly, the 240mm howitzers brought from the Kwangtung army for more than 600PP fail to make any impression on the entrenched Chinese forces. Chinese losses to bombardment have actually been quartered since the arrival of the heavy artillery brigade. [8|]
 
Anyway my forces keep moving to their positions. SNLF units recieve replacements regularly. Oil ladden tankers will soon reach the home islands.
 
Aircraft losses amounted to about 250 aircraft this month, even though there has been little actual fighting. I need to start training new pilots soon.

My bombers will start tomorrow.
Yenen will be the main army training ground for a while. I have several bases ready. Overall there will be around 1000 aircraft operating against Yenen.
 
Navytraining ground will be around Canton.
 
I the South Pacific the KB now split into 4 carrier divisions found only 2 stragglers. A tanker  and an AK. Both were hit but they did not sink.
 
An AK was sunk  by a sub. It looks like allied convoys have been dispersed. Oneofmy Glenn carrying subs was sunk at Canton though.
 
Burma is getting bombed heavily day and night. I will soon ship quantities of flak there. My plan isto have a Flak corp at each base ( 3 divisions of 3 AA regiments per corp )
 
AA regiments arebeing concentrated in Tientsin and Tokyo for shipment. I do not need 20 AA regiments in Manchuria.
A CVE arrived today. I will recieve a Zero daitai and will be assigned to the replenishment TF thas is being assembled.

In the south Pacific my carriers caught a few ships. 15 ships werehit including 8 tankers. 8 ships have sunk so far. Some may follow. My carriers are now withdrawing. The carrier divisions will reunite and sail back to Truk. They are in an exposed situation right now so it's time to leave before an American reaction.
 
In Gilli Gilli a NLF was landed only to find the base occupied by troops from the 7th Australian division. The AP that landed the NLF hit a mine and sank.
 
In China Yenen isnow bombed everyday. An assault brought the forts down to 2. More forces are converging on the city which should fall within 10 days.

In the Pacific KB is heading home. Carrier division 3 is already in Truk. Carrier division 1, 2 and 4 are are grouped and are now about 300 miles North of Guadalcanal running low on fuel. They will meet a replenishmend TF with 16000 fuel tomorrow. Hopefully this will be enough to bring them to Truk. I do not know which DDs to use with my carriers. Minekaze are nice with good AA and ASW but short legs. Ithing I will use them as escorts in the major fleet operations while i'll use the longer ranged classes to escort myanti shipping raids....... 
 
Thoughts and experience from other Japanese players will be welcome on this one.
 
In Truk I'm waiting for the last troop TF to arrive and the PM invasion force will be complete. Gilli Gilli will be bypassed and attended to after the fall of PM.
 
However I'm short of fuel and supply. Some convoys are coming regularly but I donot have enough yet. I have about 100000 of each between Rabaul and Truk. Truk is low on supply at the moment with only about 11000 left but some convoys are coming. Fuel is a more of an issue as I have few tankers available at the moment and major fleet operations will eat up masses of fuel.
 
Allied submarines are very active in the port of Rabaul at the moment. Some have layed some mines. They managed to sink two MSW. At least four of them have been plastered by my ASW but I scored no kill so far. 
 
The central Pacific is quiet. I'm bringing in reinforcements and supplies.I'm waiting for the naval guard units to grow in strength before I deploy them. 720 SNL squads have been used so far. That's 2 divisions worth of infantry.
 
Around Pago Pago my subs hit a TK and an AP but did not sink them.
 
In the SWPAC some allied fighters are having fun strafing Teninbar. I'm bringing insome zeros tosee if I can do something about it.
 
In Burma about 300 aircraft hit my bases everyday. Rangoon was plastered and I lost almost 150 planes there. Mainly transports and recon and a few Nells and Betties. TheFirst Flak units are on the way. I hope my Flak will be able to put a drain on his air offensive.
 
In China  the offensive over Yenen coninues. The fort has been reduced to level 2 but at a high cost. The last assaul failed and I lost 8000 to 2000. My airforce has been grounded for more than aweek due to thunderstorms. I do not want to suffer op losses. The allies lose about a dozen planes a day to op losses at the moment.
 
Japan ran out of oil about one week before the first convoys got there. Hopefully there was enough HI in stock so production was not affected. More convoys areon the way but I also need to send fuel and supply to the front lines. I have plenty of fuel but not enough tankers to move it around while I have plenty of AKs but my supply is scattered between all my bases. soIt arrives to the front bases in small quantities which arenot enough to support a major offensive yet.

Two zero Daitai were waiting for the unsuspecting allied fighter raid.
the 14 zero on station managed to shoot down 19 allied fighters at no loss to themselves. Nice little victory.
In China a Val daitai starts training againstchinese units outside Canton.
In the Pacific the CV TFs sucked the two AOs dry. They are still 21 hexes from Truk.
In Northern China T-storms all over the place as usual. My air force has been grounded for over 2 weeks.
My troops are recovering from their assaults in Yennen. Infantry losses have been heavy.

In Burma allied raids keep on pounding my bases.
I use 2 3500 tons AK to shuttle resources to Singapore. I can afford to lose them. OIL is stockpiling there,so I may risk  a small TK.
 
In the SRA my convoys are loading all what they can put their hands on to feed the industry.l had a shortage of resources in the home islands for a few days. Hopefully The stock of HI was sufficient, but I need to bring enough resources so that my industry runs smoothly.
 
In China the Siege of Yennen continues. The weather cleared and my airforces started pounding the city. I'm bombing the airfield. I hope this will prevent the chinese from rebuilding the forts.
 
There are now 20 units in Yennen. There are at least 17 combat units so 2 or maybe 3 HQs at most. The chinese forces should be low on support and possibly on supply. My engineers have suffered a lot though, and they need a few days rest.
 
In the central Pacific, I'm launching an assault on Gilli Gilli. The 7th Australian division is there with a base force.
Air raids from Rabaul are causing them a lot of damage. The division also suffered during it's transport with several transport ships sunk. I'm sending with imperial guard, 2 brigades the south seas detachment and warious supports, HQ, Engineers, art and armour.
 
Once Gilli Gilli falls I launch the assault on PM.
 
In the South Pacific, again alot of allied traffic. My subs score a number of hits but sink few ships while Allied hunter killer groups are lethal. Reinforcements are starting to move towards Tarawa. A base force should get there in a few days. Naval guards will follow soon.

After a couple of weeks of pounding from the air, Gilli Gilli was finally invadedafter a last round of naval bombardment.
Landings took 3 full days the base was captured at the first assault. The australian division was in a poor shape and did not offer much resistance.
 
It retreated to the very Southeastern end of PNG and is now completely cut of.
 
Gilli Gilli was heavily mined. About 15 ships were seriously damaged by mines and coastal guns. 1 DD and 1 AP were sunk. 2 CLs have been seriously damaged but should survive. I think Iwill lose about 4 or 5 other transports.  
 
MC sent some aircraft to Gilli Gilli. The finished off my damaged DD, but the KB swept them clean. All in all about 150 allied aircraft lost against about 50 Japanese. A lot  of Kittyhawks have been destroyed and PM is closed for a few days. B24s managed to score a number of hits on my BBs and downed more zeroes than all the other allied aircraft combined.......[8|]
 
A couple of unclonclusive night battles occured of PM. An allied TF met one my bombardment TFS but not much happened. A lot of smoke and some shells wasted. 
 
In China the siege of Yennen continues. I'm slowly grinding the forts down. I bombardments should slow down the chinese  efforts to rebuild the forts.
 
I'm still short of resources in Japan. Convoys are on the way But I do not manageto build a significantreserve of HI.
 
I also need to build astrategic reserve of OIL and resources in Japan.
