Thinking about upgrading from Pacific War

Post by dhuffjr2 »

I'm a huge fan of Pacific War and thinking hard about this game.

I noticed a comment about LCI(R,M,G) being useless, why, don't they add to amphibous attacks somehow?

I noticed LCVP, are LVAT simmed too? In that you have various choices of landing craft/vehicles and you select the proper type for the target in question?

I see various support craft, are their fleet tugs too or do you need to use line ships to return crippled ships to port?

Does the not unload shipping feature hold if you disband the convoy? Meaning you can send shipping to an atoll and have the ships remain as afloat warehousing of sorts to prevent spoilage?

They're supposed to, but have never worked correctly.

No. The smaller landing craft aren't meant for landings as such; AP's, LST's and such are considered to carry their own landing craft.

Not necessarily. No fleet tugs.

Yes, but I think you have to keep them in their convoy. I suppose you could split some ships you want out of a convoy, put them in a seperate task force and then have them sit there.

Do you mean LVTs? They are there, but just as part of the TOE of the units that were equipped with them. As such they are just like other armoured units, and need to ride to the target in LSTs.

You can disband loaded ships; they can sit at anchor indefinitely fully loaded.

Not necessarily. No fleet tugs.

But regardless of damage, a TF may always move a minimum of one hex/phase (~5kt)

Thanks for the answers guys.

How about coast defense guns/forts.

Shame about the LSI support ships not working right. Is it supposed to be addressed in a the future?

How about mines. How does that work, good/bad?

Mostly wimpy, except when you count on them being wimpy.

Probably not, since its probably a matter of the programming for them not being finished rather than being a bug.

Wimpy. Apparently GG lost a ship to mines in a game of Uncommon Valor and gutted their effectiveness in retaliation.

Mines aren't that wimpy. They're a nuisance, certainly, rather than a serious threat, but they can cause plenty of damage.

Your pants?  I don't think so, I stole them from TV critic Tim Goodman.

And he stole them from me!

Come to think of it, I'm not sure I want them back anymore... I'll just get a new pair instead...

I've definitely had some good results with mines in WITP. Though not so much so in my CHS v2.07 game - which is funny because this is the one where I sent the MLE from Ceylon to Soerabaja. Previous games have caused numerous sinkings, this one only one so far. EDIT: I have an Aug '42 game with 23 sinkings credited to mines.

And I finally had a truly good result with the Corregidor CDs, sinking five Japanese DDs in one night and forcing an invasion force to turn away.

If CD guns and mines are wimmpy, then why did U2 just hand my A$$ to me when I made a 3 division landing on one of his islands?[:@]

Yup. CD's are not 'wimpy'. I had 7 divisions battled beaten up by several CD guns when I invaded Wake a while back

7 divisions! Obviously there is not a coded restriction on landing force size then.

Doesn't bombardment/air attacks destroy/suppress CD?

"Never enough" is the most obvious answer. The underlying problem is the fact that there are no stacking limits, so you could, in theory, put every single coastal defence unit in the whole order of battle on one tiny little atoll, and destroy every landing attempt.

That is a gamey tactic hopefully rewarded with avoidance of that island an invasion elsewhere.....island hopping anyone?[:D]

Because it was a three division landing. I have noticed that the more ships in the TF, the more shots are fired at it. Disproportionally more. Split the TF up into half a dozen and I'll bet that you take almost no casualties from the CD guns, assuming they even fire.
