Japan takes a bloody nose

Post by Bombur »

-The myth of invencibility of Japanese fighters was shattered, as the usual raid from Mandalay found a strong enemy LR-CAP, made of Hurricanes and P-40´s. Losses were massive: 19 Oscars, 7 Zeroes and 3 Ki-48 against 6 P-40s´and 14 Hurricanes (intel estimates that three more were written off after landing). The enemy also lost a few Wirraways over Lae, bringing the overall losses to something close to 30 for both sides. Unfortunately, the B-26´s hit a transport in Lae, and we don´t know if the ship will survive.

And PM is definitely active agaim, a massive raid against Lae resulted in the loss of 10 Zeroes (only 3 in A2A) and 4 C5M´s. The enemy lost about 15 planes in the raid (12 in A2A). Lae was heavily damaged and all sake and 50% of rice was lost.

Post by Bombur »

-Admiral Nagumo, commanding the CV group, and Admiral Kondo, commanding the BB group, decided to retreat their ships. Despite the opposition of some CV commanders, Nagumo pointed that the enemy still had about 60 heavy bombers in PM and the CV based fighters suffered significant losses. Meanwhile, Oscars and Zeroes took a blood nose over Akyab

Well, its time to hear the other side's point of view.  I am Bombur's Allied opponent.

Basically, to sum up the campaign so far: Mid 1942: Japanese battleships, protected by Rabaul fighters and the KB Death Star, have pounded Port Moresby at will.  I've lost a transport fleet, a few cruisers and a lot of marginal planes trying to hold on there. However, i can say with pride that i did land substantial ground reinforcements, and thoguh the Japanese have naval supremacy right now, they will be in trouble on the ground soon enough.

Also i shipped several squadrons of Hurricanes all the way from Bombay to Perth to Port Moresby :)!!!  In a battle against the KB i lost over 120 planes (not good), but 40 precious Zero pilots of the KB are no longer in service.  A few more battles like that and the "Midway" battle will go a lot smoother.  A slow steady grind in New Guinea will turn the Japanese forces into pulp.

Wake Island was scooped up in a quick dash by the US Marines, though without sufficient force there's not much i can do as of July 1942 with it.  I cannot disclose the location of the American CV's, though several traps were laid (only one sprung) on the KB.  As Bombur wrote, massive LBA and Beaufort's with their torpedoes did not break through the CAP screen to sink any of the KB CV's.  But we'll get 'em eventually!!

The most important part of this AAR at this point, IMHO, is the Japanese strategy. I believe a Japanese opponent that stops attacking and invading is doomed.  A Japanese player without the initative can only react, almost always too late, to American advances. For example, Wake Island fell in a quick dash, but now opens up 3-4 new avenues of invasion for me, in addition to the successful landing of massive forces in PM. Holding Wake or attacking Midway or PM would allow the japaense to bottleneck my invasions, but now the road is opening up....

by the way i really enjoy the Nik Mod camapign much better than stock scenario. Its far more realistic and frankly, much more exciting (no longer are land-based bombers the invincible scourge of carrier fleets trying to protect landing forces)

Another member of Nik mod fanboy club[:D]

Well, you will see that Lee and me have a few disagreements on how to manage the Japanese in mid 42. Lee´s stance that an offensive strategy is better is largely based in the fact he isn´t feeling the pains of overextension. While an agressive Japan in 42 can win the game on autovictory, such expansion campaigns also are likely to make Japan fight a CV battle in the range of enemy LBA, and we know how those battles end[:D], not to mention the fast loss of experienced pilots due to offensive missions (I don´t train my bombers bombing empty bases much less disband bomber squadrons to get fighter pilots). On the other hand, if the Japanese player plays on defense and the allied doesn´t make mistakes like sending 4 CV´s against 10 Japanese, the the game is pretty much decided. I actually attempted an intermediate strategy. The objective was to make PM untenable as a major base. The strategy worked well in May/Jun, as the enemy lost hundreds of aircraft and dozens of ships attempting to keep PM. Unfortunately, he succeded in reinforcing/supplying the base and now bombardment missions will be much more costly. The loss of 40 Zeroes is a serious blow to KB. The things are even worse because Lee took Wake (curiously he was only able to do this because my Carriers were sailing to PM, if they were stationed at Trunk he would have a little trouble). In other words, while he is suffering a tatical defeat, he achieved, up to now, a strategic victory. It should be noticed that it is still Nik v5.2. Japan still has the Uber Tojo and the Uber Jack. This will hopefully help me in the event of a larger counteroffensive.

-Excellent point[:D][:D][:D][:D]

-Unfortunately, Lee didn´t risk his carriers up to now. To make things even worse, a massive raid against Gilli Gilli went largely unopposed and inflicted significant damage to the base. Yamamoto is not happy with the situation in New Guinea.
