Artillery on Defense

Post by rhinobones »

Been wondering if it really makes a difference for defensive artillery whether they are set on minimize, limit or ignore losses.

If the enemy attacks and your artillery supports the defense, does ignore losses provide more defense than minimize losses? Would artillery set on ignore losses cause the attacker to burn extra rounds?

Anyone happen to have made a test?

I think passive supporting artillery, on the attack or on the defence, ignores its loss setting.

Unless something has changed for the Matrix edition, the loss setting assigned to artillery on passive support(or active, for that matter) determines how many rounds it will fire for.  Minimize losses gets you 1 round, limit gets you 2, ignore buys you three rounds.

That is incorrect. Even in CoW, passively supporting artillery and air would continue to fight for every tactical round in which a friendly ground unit was still participating, regardless of the loss tolerance of the supporting units. The loss tolerance settings will determine the nominal number of tactical rounds that ranged weapons will fire in direct fire, subject to loss-induced break-offs.

And no, we didn't change that behavior.

All right, bottom line seems to be that it is a waste of time to play with the loss settings for passive artillery when the artillery is strictly in support of the defense. Suppose, however, that when artillery is in jeopardy of being attacked by air or ground one might want to consider adjusting the loss setting as appropriate for the situation.
