GiO

Post by Okimaw »

I was wondering if anyone out there is playing a game of GiO converted to TOAW 3? If so what turn are you on? I opened it up in the editor and it says valid scenario but it seemed to have had a withdraw units bug but I don't know if that was strictly from converting the game from ACOW to TOAW 3 (I know, I know, that isn't recommended).

How else are you supposed to convert from ACOW to T3? I still have ACOW loaded on my hard disk......you want me to convert it from ACOW to T3 for you? I don't seem to find GiO in my T3 scenarios so if you want it converted just send it to me and I'll post the result here on the forum. You're welcome.

EDIT: Or alternately, you could just post the GiO thingie here and I'll download it from the forum and convert it. And post it here. The result I mean.

Thanks Larry, I kind of worded the original post poorly. I converted the scen already but me and Sergeant Major converted our game around turn 21 and the bulk of his units disappeared on turn 27. I was just wondering if anyone if anyone is currently playing and if it's going ok

Anyone good with under the hood stuff care to take a look at this in the editor and tell mr what it means? Like will we still be good to go still or is this a show stopper?

This is a PBM game? Then you're out of luck. It was just barely possible to retreive games part-way through under TOAW-CW by loading them into the editor, setting the event triggers back, then starting it as a new scenario. This functionality has been removed from TOAW III- the save file won't open in the editor at all.

The only thing you can do is go back to your pre-conversion save and play the game out under COW.

We're only on turn 3 at the moment so starting over wouldn't be that big of a deal. I was actually wondering if somebody could tell me whaqt the exact effect of these errors would be, like I said show stopper or minor glitch. If it was a show stopper, what one would have to do to fix them

Oh, I thought you were still on the same game that was at turn 27.

Anyway, the events in question are targetting the wrong units due to a problem in the conversion. They will withdraw most of the OOB. Give me a moment and I'll look into it some more.

OK, in COW the targets of these events are;
251: 42nd Macedonian
252: 5th Krajina Asst
258: Bulg 22.ID

Try entering these unit names into the scenario in the TOAW III editor. That should fix these events. There may be other problems though; it is likely that other events which reference specific units have also been broken.

Ok, thanks alot Golden. I'll go into the editor and I guess we'll start over. Luckily we're not too far into the game so this isn't such a tragedy.

If you have COW, you should probably open the scenario in that, write down the names of any unit or formation referenced by event (and the event number of course) and check all the events in the TOAW III version.

The impact might not be as dramatic as the three already identified, but it could still be very annoying.

Yes I may as well do that. I think we caught the major one that occurred in an earlier game but who knows what may be ahead.

I just looked in the editor at events 251, 252, 258 and all 3 units that were supposed to be listed are the ones in those events. does this signify that the scenario debugger was successful in fixing the errors?

I have just tried converting GiO and I got about 35 event errors. I opened the .SCE file, downloaded from Rugged Defense, in the Editor and then just saved it again. None of the events I got errors on are those which Okimaw listed (251, 252 and 258.)

Why I should get more and different erros to Okimaw is perplexing. Did I do the conversion wrong?

I wish the developer was around and tweeked these in the editor for us. This is a cool scenario to play and I prefer to play it in TOAW 3 after shelling out the $$ for it. Me and my opponent both have ACOW but I talked him into playing the converted version on TOAW 3  [:D]

BTW, why don't you paste those errors in a post so that hopefully someone more knowledgeable of the scenario editor will feel benvolent enough to take a more in depth look at this scen. I'm about 20% into my start of Operation Bagration at the moment.

I have included them here as a text file, for those who are interested. Does Daniel McBride frequent these pages, is he likely to make a TOAWIII version of his scenarios. I also had the same experience when I tried to convert DNO, with many erros listed.

hmmmm..I am by no means experinced with the editor but maybe later tonight or sometime tomorrow I'll open up my ACOW version and TOAW version and compare the events. The headache is that there's like 500 events here, if we get some volunteers maybe we can divy them up and see what if anything ought to be fixed. I hope Mcbride pops in and helps us out as he'd know better than any of us what should be what under the hood.

I just downloaded GiO 1.81 from Rugged Defense and converted it to TOAW III (using 3.0.0.17). An Event Error text file was indeed created, but made exclusively of false positives, as the event structure (after a quick scrolling through it) seems OK in the TOAW III version. No information is missing in the Formation Orders events incriminated by Elmer.

You should check the events in your converted scenarios to see whether they're actually all right or not.

Okimaw's set of error is different probably because (correct me if I'm wrong) the scenario got converted while played in PBEM. In that case, there might effectively be something amiss with the Withdraw Army type of event - or at least I'm inclined to believe so.

Hope it helps.

Actually the error file that I posted was from a fresh pbem game. The game that was converted at turn 22 was terminated quite some time ago. It seems that the error file generated in my game was false positives as well. This afternoon I went into my ACOW GiO 1.81 and checked the three events against the TOAW 3 conversion and they checked out fine. I hope this is the extent of any troubles with this otherwise excellent scenario.

To my knowledge, no and yes. In fact so far as I'm aware the latter is the reason the scenarios aren't on the disc. He wanted to release the TOAW III versions separately.
