Comic Book Ads for Wargames

I suppose this is an age test, of sorts. I recall that in the mid to late 60s, Avalon Hill placed a few ads in certain Marvel comics -- I believe that's how I was introduced to the world of board wargames as a ten-year-old kid in 1967.

What's even weirder is that I also recall a few ads for Mothers of Invention LPs in Marvel comics. Didn't realize how subversive the comic book world really was back in 1967-68.
Anyone else of my generation remember this?

Of course, my parents unknowingly contributed to my twisted imagination -- in 1967, for birthday/Christmas presents, they bought me copies of AH's "Stalingrad" (my first-ever wargame), The Beatles' "Sgt. Pepper" LP, AND a cheap acoustic guitar.

Those three items changed my life.

I remember the cheesy little 2-D plastic Civil War Soldiers that they sold in the comic books. My big brother had several sets of them. I think there was a WWII set too, but was in green plastic instead of blue and gray.

Of course, they were also selling "Sea Monkeys" (brine shrimp) back then too.

Ah, the good ole' days, eh? When $1 would buy you all this wonderful stuff! And the comic was only a dime too!

Saturday afternoon I would jump on my 5 speed Apple Crate and pedal down to 7-11 and spend my weeks earnings ,

1 slurped (pre-Big Gulp days),

1 pack of Topps baseball cards (remember the gum hehe) ,

And once a month the new Sgt. Rock would hit the stand.

Now who didn’t want a pair of these

Not an ad, but a great photo: I still have my original 1967 copy of this game -- this is what you got -- ahistorical, but a classic slugging match, with the Germans having stacks of 8-8-6 and 7-7-6 Panzer corps along with 4-4-4 infantry corps for "soak-off" purposes facing Russian 4-6-4 infantry corps and the dreaded 6-9-6 and 7-10-4 units.

LOL, I had these. They were once part of a "comic" called "Yps" here in Germany.

Oh man... my brother and I did have that sub....... we saved our grass cutting money to buy it. It was made of a kind of Masonite type of stuff. We put it in our pool and got in, but it absorbed the water and disintegrated. My dad was not a happy camper when it came apart , as thousands of pieces of the material clogged the filter and he made us drain the pool and clean it.

But we did save like $650,000,000 if we would have went out and bought the real thing. So I guess we got our money's worth out of it... for like 7 minutes....
