The build up at Sabang seems to be going nicely! [:D]

Damn, you got a lot forces at New Caledonia! I bet you hope for a visit from KB there? [;)]

Could we have an overview screenshot too.

Can you fake a ground attack on Timor? Some TFs with empty AKs, maybe some light cruisers as escorts? Does he know where all your carriers are (I mean the real ones, not the British [;)])? He's probably preparing his response against Sabang right now, but he might be thrown off by a possible Timor invasion. This is probably far fetched, but if you can make him think that Sabang was only a diversion, and your main thrust is going to happen at Timor (or maybe PM?), you could gain some valuable time to build up Sabang.

Looks like your previous build-up in the Aleutians was at a sweet spot: you were weak enough to entice him to attack, but strong enough to defeat him. When writing your autobiography, you should claim that this was your plan from the beginning... [;)]

1274 psi .. thank you for your kind words .. all readers welcome

Azrez ..all those engineers are on vanikolo island [:D].. and seem to be sleeping as its taking forever to build up. KB is more than welcoem to come along here anytime he wants ,, might go home with a few more ventilaton holes mind you.

VSWG .. no sure i even have to fake an an attack on timor as he seems to be talking about it all the time and i caught some AP's in the harbour today too. unloadibg or loading ? dunno

considering the CAP .. they did very well ..stand down and let the subs work now .. 8 sent to intercept positions.

the aleutians was a close run thing in all honesty .. I had failed to build up the rearward bases first.. but he came in with too little and i'd heavily fortified too. now my airforce rules the skies up there and 2 more level 4 airfields came online today in range of attu for b25s etc. The surface forces dispatched to the west coast for use up north are still undergoing repairs after refitting and its the DD's this time that got a big hit while the bb's only went up 1-2 points of sys damage the dd's got 11 on average. looks like more AA/ASW (on some and secodary radar ( surface use ? ).

Been a quiet turn overall . but i am in danger of getting myself flanked in burma .. hard decision but ive reduced my front line by quite a bit ( hope he doesn't notice). bombers as usual hit his troops hard though amd no sign of japanese airforces .. sporadic LR cap hasnt caught anyone.

Sabang .. more troops ( mostly support BF/eng etc.) coming in about 8 days .. i sail to the west of the island and approach from there , its far safer although a bit slower. subs stationed between java/sumatra to spot any Cv's that might try and sneak through.

next turn aztez overview piccie.. also ill do N australia as i am doing some fake ops here anyway, so vswg and i think alike [;)]

P>S .. i have a BIG transport fleet in townsville ahich he recons regularly .. so he is worried about PM [;)]. 17's to hit gili gili again tomorrow ..
sorry for the spelling . English is my main language , I just can't type . and i'm too lazy to edit :)

I discovered that the AP's off koepang a few days ago were carying the 4th mixed brigade.
How ? i hear you ask .. well i sank 2 AP's at sea with subs and the rest scampered to
lautern for 'safety' under some zero cap. a few brave pilots both australian and dutch
hit this small group 4 times in 2 days . each time they made it through the cap but generally
came off a bit worse..

I tried a new trick vs his ASW Patrols in the straights of malacca which has been
very hard on my subs of late. 100ft atack from beaufighters ! luvverly luvverly. I only used one squadron and pulled the cap radius back for he escorts so i wouldnt (hopefully) go for

they again did very well . the TB's are here now so i'll retire the IL's for a deserved rest

bombard Pakhoi soon .. knowing my luck i'll hit a lone AK and tip him off but its well worth a try.

the AV discrepancy isnt too bad and may tempt in an attack .. i just hope
i can hold the line or its back to mandalay for everyone. I could reinforce it
heavily but i have earmarked off 2arm divs 3 inv divs and 2 bds to clear out the
japanese to the south and allow another encirclement ( ie force him to withdraw back to
thailand and evecuate rangoon.

No sign of retaliation vs sabang yet and the 2nd wave of merchants with fighters/fuel and more
engineers arrived at sabang safely, the CV's sent back to ceylon at top speed.

that all for tonight

bye

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/13/43

These 2 days were a mixed blessing . lets get the bad news over with first.
B17's whuch had been hurt over lae last turn, did a quick switch to buna in the
hope he was LR capping lae from here ( he's used LR cap a lot) . unfortunately
he wasnt ! eek

the really bad losses came on landing with a total of 35 b17's lost but only 14 crews .
even so its a bad attack and thier morale is unsuprisingly shot to hell.

However i did a mental count up of "AK maru etc" sinking messages and we got a grand total
of 16 merchant ships sunk by vasious means in 2 days . inc 1 TK and 6 AP's.

The totals were helped by this !

Day Air attack on TF, near Lautem at 33,78

Japanese aircraft
A6M3a Zero x 12

Allied aircraft
Boomerang II x 12

AP Rozan Maru, Bomb hits 5, on fire, heavy damage
AP Astuga Maru, Bomb hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
AP Daifuku Maru, Bomb hits 8, on fire, heavy damage

The boomerang 2 is still overmatched by zeros but they do keep them away from the
bombers which is thier main job really. and thier exp was a bit crummy.

2nd day followup hurt the 'rangs. but polished off an AP.

As i had expected japan did launch an all out attack on the front line in burma
after yesterdays AV totals. fortunately he was repulsed and a few more allied troops
are being airlifted into mandalay. Basically ive stripped out N burma of most
defensive troops and moved them into calcutta for RnR. after so long in the jungle they
needed it .. but are repairing up nicely , along with a lot of now superflous
base forces.

4 AR's are almost in calcutta after a LONG trip from cont USA. and are a welcome sight
to the submarine repair crews. will also reduce the wear and tear the RN is getting on
its escort runs and ASW duties hereabouts.

Its becoming clear i need to carry the war to japan elsewhere rather than burma and sumatra.
So in teh next month i think we will be doing the PM invasion plan. the land based air is
in place . especially lots of LR Lightnings. the troops are prepped and the shipping is
accumulated. only CV support prevented me before but with the addition of several CVL's and replensishment CVE's . it should be possible. i'll move up the AR's to townsville in case
of emergency repair work.

Also operation Ooze near lunga is carrying on despite the complete failure to build
up the dot bases north of luganville. Rennel island is the target for sub troops/supply
runs and APD's will attempt a night landing of an EAB unit. covered by P38's from lunga
so long as the weather holds out .. fingers crossed. I'm 1/2 tempted to completely ignore the
pacific for a long time and drive up from new guinea and maybe go for timor , while the
brits drive down from thier hold in sumatra and hopefully by land into thailand.

bye bye

Apologies for not updateing this for a while, I've had some sort of hideaous summer cold/flu thing that made me feel like pure %^$% for about 6 days. Fortunately i think the worst is over and i have been batting a few turns just not writing here.

So the game date is 21st April 1943.

In Burma i tried to outflank the main japanese line but was unfortunately held up in a remote jungle hex by 2 divs and a mixed brigade. Even with the RAF pounding daily they held me off but i didnt suffer too many casualties.

Japanese ground losses:
250 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

an exapmle airstike , 1-2 /day have been hitting this hex but to no avail [:(]

Ground combat at 31,33

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 37407 troops, 208 guns, 991 vehicles, Assault Value = 1061

Defending force 38212 troops, 318 guns, 134 vehicles, Assault Value = 777

Allied max assault: 978 - adjusted assault: 681

Japanese max defense: 533 - adjusted defense: 851

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
470 casualties reported
Guns lost 11

Allied ground losses:
591 casualties reported
Guns lost 24

I dont think the allied armoured brigades perform well in jungle hexes( 2 were here) and i was hopeing for a breakout , but its not to be. Looking more and more like japan can hold this line.

I do however have 2 indian divisions at 100% strength in madras that 'could' be used to invade victoria point. taking the place looks easy enough, holding it may well be another matter. Moulmein has 4 units and tavoy 8 .. a tad too strong and also expected landing points. Songika has however 17 nits , no idea of composition though. while sabang was a good operation its just not connected to anything and while a good Airfied (now 4). cant be used to invade the rest of sumatra unfortunately.

piccie shows possible invasion and the current front lines in burma .. i 'may' get one more hex toward raheng next turn as i got a 1-1 with the carabineers last turn, but he's sent in a second defending unit and my onl backup is a bust chinese div that got mauled crossing the river 1 turn before the tanks did ! idiots.

Georgettown airfield will get a going over tomorrow as only a few search planese based here as far as recon tells me.

nowt else most anywhere except i've started an allied fighter training camp in the aleutians so when the weather clears up we occasionally bomb the japanese on attu is. I'll not send any more men up for now (unless its north pacific ).

bye bye

Bit of Both [;)] and several hospital appointments/checkups/physio etc .. all take a toll [:D]

game date has crept upto 27/28 april 1943

anyway i'm feeling guilty now .. so proper update is required with piccies , cant really edit them
much as the software is in 'demo' mode i.e free !

This is who we have trapped up at attu island , Joe mailed me last turn saying that they were
dead and he cannot evac given my air presence over the area now. Also started some surface runs
as i suspected he'd not come calling and the BB's waiting in ambush might as well get some experience , all escorts bombarding too to improve the DD's at no risk.

2BB groups in the area , 1st based in attu itself and has the BB's Penny and california

2nd group of 3 BB's with very minimal escort i may add , South DAK, Arizona, massachsets and
WAsthington .. i need to split off the arizona to the other group for speed reasons.

5 DD's sent off as ASW to find /sink any japanese transport subs attempting rescue at attu.

Trying to find agressive american surface fleet commanders is tricky to say the least. Amd Halsey
seems the most cheeky but he;s earmarked for other TF's [;)]

FYI . the total bomber strength out of adak is is now

96 B24D's
72 PB4Y's

AF5's also exist at attu and kiska so i can forward deploy these assets when necessary . i'e to clobber the recue craft which i doubt will be coming . so may as well do this instead :-

Central Pacific is quiet . Midway is the main submarine base for the area but really
beaten up subs go back to PH for a proper fix.

South Pacific however is a tad warmer. Recon suggested low cap over apamanma <sp>.
so the lightnings went on a 2 day sweep . 1st day went well.

Japanese aircraft losses
A6M3a Zero: 4 destroyed, 1 damaged
Ki-43-IIa Oscar: 6 destroyed

Allied aircraft losses

total 59 japanese for 27 americans ( 20 pilots killed) . not great but not bad.
I would like more fighters here but i'll refrain from that untill im ready to
invade apanama and makin ( tarawa looks too hefty) . i have 4 DIVS in canton
prepping right now . 3-apanama 1-makin also 3rd paras for makin .

about 50% done as they were tarawa aimed but recon has shown its to hot.
Also i'd need either a ton of lightnings or CV's for the next operation.

SW Pacific .. namely operation OOZE ..

Quite frankly its been a disaster . Valinoko and Nendo (both originally size 0 bases)
are taking months to build up .. hence the eng presence on renell island. which
is making very good progress. Subs and APD's did the original runs and the apds
delivered the eng vehicles for 2 EAB's which is a great asset. lost 2 to air from
lunga though so subs now supply the place easily enough.

The air is all ready and waiting for forward deployment. im assuming P38's operate from
size 1 AF's ok ? even though its a 2E a/c.

I had the same briliant idea to build up Vanikolo in my game vs FDR. It takes ages and definately not worth it in the future. [:(]

As for your question. To my knowledge airfield size 1 should support fighters ok.

Eastern australia and new guinea

fisrly a wee warning to all allied players regarding the 1/4/43 DD upgrade .. its a BIGGIE
really clobbers the sys damage into the orange and takes a few days/weeks to fix up.
I had 4AR's in both aukland and sydney and is still took the best part of 3 weeks
to upgrade them and repair them down to useable levels.

Anyway .. PM is the next big target .. looks like its lightly held with 1 unit of
8000 men .. i have 3 divs 2RCT's and plently of sundry support stuff all prepped
and transports ready in port. BUT he's still reconing townsville wher the AP's and
troopa are .. BUT he's lost the CV's who are in brisbane and all fixed up and shiny
after some repairs in sydney.

Piccie is the CV's ready

Now do i wait for the big essex reinforcements in august (roughly) or go ahead against
a possible full KB ??[&:]!!! the thought is terrifying. and i know for a fact that lae is laced
with japanese betties.. kind of a mexican standoff except no mexicans are involved unless
some illegals signed up for the USN [:D]

The recovered B17's will fly to gili tomorrow for airfield supression , hopefully i can bag some
annoying emilys in the harbour/airfield.

N Australia and the DEI.

Not much to say about this area . all sub activity really. APD's sank the O16 last turn so im re-arranging the subs well away from those nasty buggers.

Burma/Sumatra and possibly Thailand.

Sabang (piccie) made a level 5 so i may import the B17's from burma here for anti shipping
BUT i like bombing the japanese front line , not sure if there reports actually do
any damage though .

Day Air attack on 21st Mixed Brigade, at 31,33

Boomerang II x 3
Blenheim IV x 12
Liberator VI x 9
Hudson I x 15
P-40E Warhawk x 25
B-25C Mitchell x 55
B-17E Fortress x 30

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
266 casualties reported
Guns lost 14

Akyab and mandalay are packed with as many medium and heavy bombers i have here all to
little avail so it seems .. the front line swop artillery and im re-arranging the tanks
into the open areas and sending in a chinese corps to shore up the possible gap.

I am unsure as to wether to send the 2 divs (spare) to andaman as a junp off
point .. or wait a while and do even more damage to his airfields in malaya

Allied aircraft
Brewster 339D x 14
Vengeance I x 27
Blenheim IV x 24
Beaufighter Mk 21 x 10
Beaufort V-IX x 15
P-40B Tomahawk x 30
F-5A Lightning x 4

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
173 casualties reported
Guns lost 5

Airbase hits 4
Airbase supply hits 4
Runway hits 44

this place is wrecked .. and verly lightly held as far as i can see. I suspect he's
brought in a lot of troops into songika recently given the shipping activity here.

One strategic thought that i would like advice on is " Do I sent the main SE area army HQ to
Mandalay ? ". currently its in calcutta and its annoying for 2 reasons

1) fragments regulartly appear here for front line units that i have to fly in via
dakotas

2) Mandalay seems supply short. Its constantly in the orange ( stupid iverland supply routine)

Akyab is chock full of supply from the sea by contrast.

I'd like to draw more supply to mandalay .. the 12th br. Army HQ and 221 air HQ do not
seem upto the job. I sacked the useless C/O in 12th army and found a great british general
called H.Shannon 68/60 in stats. average for the detail and a bit timid at 44 agression
but there isnt much choice [:D]

China

EDIT .. whoops forgot the commentary [X(]

Well Nanning is now ours but the supply is terrible . i've sent off a div to
reclaim those rail hexes to the west to allow supply to run in from the
north im getting naff all through wuchow even though i own the rail lines
inbetween (deliberatrly). I was suprised he ran away here (hex between
wuuchow and canton) but its a gift none the less.

Swordfish (12) and avengers (8) await the return of the japanese BB's when they come back
to bombard pakhoi .. ( based in wuchow with escort just in case). IL4's are on
100% naval search fron kweiyang as i cant base Catalinas inland. This should look
innocuous to japanese recon imo.

With the arrival of the P40N i have had to send some of the best chinese fighters into
burma for refits to this much better aircraft ( i like the range on the N model). For some
resn i cant upgrade them in china ?? must be a supply issue as ive been messing around
with Mr Kai-chek <sp> .. to try and drag supply further forward .. didnt work very well
so he's going back home to chungking.

One last comment is about my 'a/c to india run'

almost at colombo are 16 Corsairs (NZ lads so its all commonwealth). more importantly
the last P39 unit in brisbane was upgraded / split up (just in case) . loaded on 3 AK's
for a run to perth-colombo .. i think i'll need more LR fighters in this area before
too long. although the incresed range of the P40N is very very useful in itself i cant upgrade
ALL the E's to N's or i'll run out [:D].

Well thats all for today .. phew !

next turn .. hummm

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 04/29/43

SS Shad had a mixed turn

Sub attack at 40,68

Japanese Ships
AK Sumatra Maru, Shell hits 5, Torpedo hits 1, on fire, heavy damage

after a good start she got involved in a gunfight on the surface .. idiot

Sub attack at 40,68

Japanese Ships
AK Tazima Maru, Shell hits 3

Allied Ships
SS Shad, hits 5

its a daft level of damage .. and also annoying [;)]

the usual cut n paste is dull . many attacks on japanese in burma and according to joe
they do nowt at all .. months and months of heavy bombing in the jungle and if the japanese
are in supply then its repaired overnight .. thats a real blow to be honest as i expected
the allied bombers to be much more effective .. at least causing disruption .

victoria point continues to get flattened

AFTER ACTION REPORTS FOR 05/09/43

time marches on , and its been a lull week really. I can happily report the sinking of
3 APD's ! .. 2 from the USS Billfish .. hunter turned hunted and Joes not happy , he'd
rather swop a fleet carrier for those 3 ships .. [:D]

the bombing in burma went very well and the second unit blocking the carabineers and chinese
was identified as a brigade size unit CV221 .. after 4 days of HEAVY bombing its down to
an AV of about 50 .. and the SNLF remains at 0 .. shelling reveals better levels.

Ground combat at 33,34

Allied Bombardment attack

Attacking force 4768 troops, 29 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 198

Defending force 6064 troops, 40 guns, 0 vehicles, Assault Value = 121

The bombing has definately stopped him for kicking me out but my supply level is at 1/3 needed
even with dakotas flying in supply from india. humm need to ponder this for a bit. Moving SE Asia
command to mandalay was a good move and all bases here are now much much happier.lets hope
some trickles down the trail.

I made a boo boo as well .. deliberate attack on attu ..

Ground combat at Attu Island

Allied Deliberate attack

Attacking force 21052 troops, 223 guns, 12 vehicles, Assault Value = 389

Defending force 30433 troops, 48 guns, 159 vehicles, Assault Value = 670

Allied max assault: 424 - adjusted assault: 64

Japanese max defense: 447 - adjusted defense: 385

Allied assault odds: 0 to 1

Japanese ground losses:
126 casualties reported
Guns lost 2
Vehicles lost 1

Allied ground losses:
964 casualties reported OUCH
Guns lost 42

From the bombardment screen his AV's had plummeted so i thought he was out of supply.
apparently not , else hes just too tough for 2 weak RCT .. 3rd RCT on the way from adak is.

Long island has been working over its dauntless airgroup while dodging subs and bombing his men
till i ran out of bombs anyway , back to adak for more[;)] only having one DE escort makes this
quite exciting [:D]. other DD's on ASW with no luck so far . 4 more escorting the slow BB's.
fast BB's are wasted up here , back to PH for 2 to get the 4/43 refits.

Sub attack at 40,68

Japanese Ships
APD APD-2, Torpedo hits 2, on fire, heavy damage
APD APD-1

Allied Ships
SS Billfish

Allied NF's are useless , completely useless.

Night Air attack on Sabang , at 19,41

Japanese aircraft
Ki-45 KAIa Nick x 51

Allied aircraft
Beaufighter VIF x 12

Japanese aircraft losses
Ki-45 KAIa Nick: 1 destroyed, 6 damaged

Allied aircraft losses
Beaufighter VIF: 1 damaged
Hurricane II: 1 destroyed

Runway hits 1

no real damage .. ive crated up the american P70's ??? for a trip from noumea to ceylon.

And i have to say that the CW has HUGE amounts of BF's just milling about, so time for a
revamp .. all spares are getting shipped to madras for a fix up and then send about 400AV back to
burma while the other 6-700 await a new base for deployment.

Chinese P40N return to chungking while others refit in mandalay. looking forward to
using these a/c .. maybe base in nanning (size 6) and try and plaster hanoi .. using ONLY
chinese a/c too .. [:D] Britain might send a 'volunteer' fighter and bomber unit if needed.
Supply will be the bugbear here though.

this is the japenese Bde thats been getting the RAF's attention in burma

Day Air attack on 22nd Ind.Mixed Brigade, at 33,34

Allied aircraft
Boomerang II x 5
Blenheim IV x 12
Liberator VI x 10
Hudson I x 13
P-40E Warhawk x 22
B-25C Mitchell x 47
B-17E Fortress x 42

No Allied losses

Japanese ground losses:
305 casualties reported
Guns lost 4

2 attacks/day of similar size has rapidly culled this otherwise very nasty unit. Still it
continues the stalemate in burma. no sign of a breakthrough here at all in honesty.

CV Hiyo spotted at tulagi anchorage by Pb4Y's from luganville .. so no rusing to reinforce
russel island ( just made an AF1). will use dakotas to fly in more men over the next weeks.
i have c. 150 heading to luganville for the job. and then fly in the corsairs as fighter
cover.

all for now
