Is there a Demo & Is This the Game for Me?

Post by Rocko911 »

I am deciding between this and another Matrix game. I have Korsun Pocket, Gary Grigsby's World At War, Uncommon Valor & Panzer Command Winter Storm. So I am not a wargamer noob. I am looking at this and War In The Pacific. I play mainly turn based but do play Combat Mission games and Close Combat games & Panzer Command. Is this game pretty easy to pick up and figure out or is it a logistic headache like World at War can be from time to time? Does this sound like a game for me or is War in the Pacific a better match. Is this a fun strategy game or more a dull strategy game and finally does this have replayablity ? Thanks in advance.

Hi,

- no demo, but a pretty good picture of what this game is all about can be gotten from MarkShot's miniguides - get them here : m.asp?m=977049

- War in the Pacific is a monster game, meaning it'll eat your game-time like snow melts in the August sun, but it's turn-based and can be played PBEM.

- COTA is pretty easy to pick up. Not because I say so, but because I know as I've explained/shown the basic principles of the game in 5-10 minutes to absolute newbees a couple of dozen times on a couple of conventions and that was enough to get them gaming. The user interface is pretty slick and easy so this combined with basic military principles will get you proficient in no time.

- Is it fun ? well, I think it is [:'(] - mainly because it's got such a strong AI opponent. Easily one of the best in the business giving you tremendous replayability because no game will play out the same twice.

All in all my best advice is to check MarkShot's miniguides, and you'll soon know if this is a game for you or not.

P.S. playing online is a blast too [8D]

Yes, it's a fantastic game. Read a bit about about the operations before you play - it adds quite a bit to your enjoyment of the game.

I've played all the games you mentioned though PZ was not for me. COTA is a genre all to itself. WITP is a totally different and huge animal and hard to predict who will like both. Both WITP and COTA are excellent games. WITP may be a more familar game to you versus COTA as COTA is so unique but it will really challenge your wargaming mind like few others I can think of.

If I started over, I'd still buy both. COTA is much less of a time investment if that helps.

WITP will take more time then you can imagine if you play the campaigns. PBEM is the way to go with that game while COTA is only TCP/IP but it's AI will kick your arse whereas WITP's AI is not such a challenge due to the broad arena and complexity.

You can't really go wrong either way and much is your personal preference since both games are classics. Good luck!

Yeah, going through MarkShot's AAR threads gives a very good representation of the game.

There actually is a demo of the first Airborne Assault game - Red Devils over Arnhem. It's very primitive compared to the later installments, though. It did manage to captivate me and persuade me to buy the other games in the series, however, I imagine it could easily be difficult to get into if you don't know what to do. If you want to try the demo, I suggest going through the AARs and see how the game works, and then test it out in the old demo. Again, I repeat, the demo is very primitive compared to COTA. COTA's interface is very slick and refined.

COTA is also virtually bug free compared to WITP witch still has some serious bugs even at latest versions.

WITP at 1.801 there is bug that could stop your campaign when your planes divert from carriers it could make game CTD every time turn update.

Alright I am close to a purchase, but I have Flashpoint Germany and this sounds similar in style to it. The problem is that Flashpoint was an ok game , but I felt disjointed from the combat. Is this game simlar to that?

The 2 games are nothing alike.

Conquest of the Agean is a much better game.
