RE: Pzjg Hortlund vs 2nd ACR -round two
Just so people know, this game still lives. We are now in 2/21/42 after resuming play after my busy summer schedule. The battle of Java is sucking men and ships at a ferocious pace. He has shipped the 18th UK division into Batvia and I of course landed right on it with a division and brigade. I have begun landing a division over the beach just south of Batvia and am taking a huge pounding from the air.
We have had many and I mean MANY surface battles near Java in the Batvia area. Unfortunatly, my prized CV Shokaku met her doom near Tarawa around Jan 42 to allied CV's after a raid near Canton island. Zuikaku was also pounded. The allies traded 1 CV Saratoga in the exchange. It was my fault I lost the CV, I forgot to change them off of port attack until it was too late. We will see if Panzer updates anything.

RE: Pzjg Hortlund vs 2nd ACR -round two
Oh, that is not the only thing Ive shipped into Java. I suppose I shouldnt be telling you this, but you'll find out soon enough anyway. Ive got 3 Aussie brigades there aswell.
Old 2ndARC tried to catch me with my pants down at Java. First he landed a NLF unit at Kragen, but I managed to kill that landing before he could reinforce it. Then he landed at Batavia with one division and one brigade. Unfortunaly for the japanese, I had brought in the 18th UK from India. His landings failed, and now they are being pounded by 3 artillery brigades also brough in from India. He is losing 2-400 men per day to those bombings.
Then he tried to land the Imperial guards division south of Batavia. Ive sunk many of his APs, more than ten, and he has taken heavy losses. I think he's lost more than 1 000 men who went down with those ships.

I figured you had shipped a whole slew of units into Java. And after seeing the amount of heavy combat ships you have shoved forward, I knew I had a serious fight on my hand.
Now I have 2 divisions and brigade on Java proper. Only the Imperial Guard Div is free to move about. The other 2 units are stuck at Batvia. But I have 3 additional brigades and 6 freshly freed up divisions to pump into Java. Currently shifting them into place now. Java is also now a focus of 90% of my air power. KB is in the area, heavy surface shipping in the area. Just a matter of time before I have another toehold in Java. And if I take a base, just watch how fast things will fall then. I have massive airlift capability.

RE: Pzjg Hortlund vs 2nd ACR -round two
Well, here is my motivation for pumping so much troops into Java.
Java is one of those places that you simply have to take. In the early game, you can pretty much dominate the entire map, heck if you want, right now you can take Pearl. But we both know one thing you and I, you have to take Java.
So, instead of trying to slow you down in several places, Im focusing on that one spot. Because we both know that you have to come there. I get to pick the spot where to defend, instead of spreading out.
18th UK is doing much more here than it would do in Mandalay or Colombo. You cant go into the Bay of Bengal until you have Java anyway. The 3 australian brigades are doing much more here than they would do at Port Moresby or Guadalcanal. Because you cant go into Port Moresby without the KB, and they are busy at Java... you get the idea. Right now Im crippling your entire war effort, simply by forcing you to use more and more troops in Java. That costs time...the one thing the Japanese does not have much of at the beginning of the game.
Right now you have all your battleships around Java. You have your entire carrier fleet there (save two CVs, one sunk and one banged-up in port). You are concentrating your airforce to your bases in Singapore and Borneo. You are shifting the divisions from the PI into the area, and the divisions in Malaya are focused on this one place.
So, will you take it? Of cource you will. But you will pay heavily for it. Most of the bases are up to fort level 5-7 now, I have at least two brigades in every..single...base, Ive got artillery, lots of engineers. Ive got 5 US battlewagons from Pearl in the area, Ive got the RN carriers there, Ive got the dutch and aussie airunits there, and by now they are approaching 80 exp. Like I said, you will take Java...but it will take you time, and you will pay heavily for it.
I love this game.

Only the Imperial Guard Div is free to move about.
Yeah, but they cant be in that good shape. Offloaded into a non-base hex with heavy losses, stuck in a non-base-hex in a malaria zone, depending completely on airlifted supply. Right now I dont fear them that much, their fatigue/disruption must be pretty high.

And this is exactly the reason why the opening port attack on Manila is always a grave mistake, IMHO.
While the US subs located in Manila at start are far from useless and may be a real pain to the Japanese, the old US battlewagons, if left alone, are able to deal out much more punishment when properly used (Java, Guadalcanal, even Rabaul). One cannot prevent or even delay a Japanese invasion attempt with subs while battleships are ostensibly able to do just this.

Well, actually, Japanese CAs and DDs proved to be a much graver threat. I lost a surface action where I had 4 BBs and a handful of destroyers against 4 Japanese CAs and a handful of destroyers.
Two of my BBs were sunk, and the other two crippled.
Lets just say I was pretty unhappy about that surface action. 4 BBs should be able to defeat 4 CAs.
