Engineers vs. Engineer Squads

Post by GaryChildress »

Do engineer squads have the ability to build fortifications, airfields and ports? Or do only engineer support units have that capability?

Thanks,

Engineer squad tear down fortifications, engineer support units build them as well as build airfields and ports.

Theoretically both do both.

In practice there is some question about if combat engineers actually build?

WITPQS reported they don't - and I ran tests confirming his findings - but Matrix says either we must be wrong - or things are not working as they should.

In our tests, adding a single squad of "real" engineers makes construction take off. Maybe combat engineers are helpers?

I put a unit with only combat engineers into a base and it sat there for a month with no work done. I put a base force there with about 12 engineers and the base started building, but it was glacially slow. I pulled the combat engineers out and I noticed no difference in the speed of construction. As far as I can tell, they did nothing at all for construction.

Allegedly construction engineers work faster if they have infantry - probably including combat engineers -
to help them.

If combat engineers don't contribute to base and fort building then that sort of throws a monkey wrench in my plans. I was going to replace the four support engineer squads in the SNLF units with combat engineers to increase the assault a bit.

I'm wondering if that wasn't the case with the actual units anyway, that the engineer squads were actaully combat engineers and not just construction. [&:]

Something is wrong with your SNLFs in the first place. They have 6 combat engineer squads and no construction engineers at all.

In the CHS game I'm playing they have construction engineers, not combat engineers. It seems like they should have combat engineers instead. [X(]

EDIT: 6 squads? Is that in one or two engineer platoons? The OOB I've been looking at has only one engineer platoon.

You are dead on right. But IJN had BIG platoons - typically 50 men. There were no less than four fire teams in the infantry - and six engineer teams in the "one" engineer platoon! Each had one flamethrower, among other things. They had explosives of various kinds, but none of the fancy toys of the Army "electric" engineers.
