CHS: Mandalay on the wrong side of the river?

Post by GaryChildress »

This has probably already been discussed also but shouldn't Mandalay be on the east bank of the Irrawaddy river and not on the west? Most maps I've checked have it on the east bank. In CHS Mandalay is wedged between what look to be the Irrawaddy and Chindwin rivers.

Thanks,

Here's a tourist map of Mandalay showing the Irrawaddy to the west.

And here's a map out of the West Point Atlas.

One always suspects there are hidden AFBs and JFBs in WITP development. This was probably done to make
it harder to take. It would not be hard to fix. But I don't do art - it depends on Cobra's schedule.
We can fix it if you think it is worth a new map panel - or fold it into the next map panel in that area.

You know Cobra - my nickname for him (from a gospel song) is

"sooner than right now"

this is in for RHS -

I need to do a pwhex file - and I probably cannot beat Cobra - but I am fast
in my own way

I will release a twin pwhex file with the new art

RHS standard pwhex and
RHS Panama pwhex (with the canal 'busted')

Before you try to fix anything, look at a more detailed map of Burma (hint: the river to the south of Mandalay is not the Irrawaddy...).

I have not been to Burma - it not the sort of place I can go and stay alive -

but I have maps of everything in Asia.

There is a small river south of town - too small to show up - or maybe one hex side worth.

The Irrawaddy indeed is to the West - and does not circle the town.

And there is no river on my detail charts or maps to the east or northeast or southeast.

There is one thing to verify - maybe Mandaly actualyl stradles the river (as many cities do)? If so, where is the airbase?

The map you attached shows Mandalay as a point - no help. The brochure style map you attached might help if it shows a wider area. For example, does it show the airport? If so, perhaps the airport is the old airfield?

Here's a tourist map of Mandalay. It looks to me like the whole city is on the east bank. It doesn't even show a west bank.

As far as the old airfield, in the big map, which is a section of the smaller, you will see that something called the "Old Airfield" exists on the east bank of the Irrawaddy within the city itself.

It looks to me like Mandalay should be represented on the east side of the Irrawaddy, airfield and all.

here's the link I'm looking at: http://www.dpsmap.com/mandalay/index.shtml

Good enough for me. I am coding the pwhex file now - and Cobra is just waiting for me to say what happens to do this - and the new Atlantic Entry thing - I will transmit to him within the hour. You have your wish -
and you can use this map with either CHS or RHS. This probably will be the LAST time RHS maps are interchangable.
But using my pwhex file and the RHS map you may play either game - just call the scenario. [Thiis was discovered by Cobra - or if not - at least he is the one to taught me].

There is another river that connects to Irrawaddy south of Mandalay. If you put Mandalay to map without it being behind river...well..it won't be historical.

Correction:

The Irrawaddy should be indeed to the west (north on the map) of Mandalay. But there IS a river south of the city, coming from Lashio: the Doktawaddy. It's not on the map, though. Should it be on the map?

I think yes. mandalay should have Irrawaddy west (and maybe north too) of Mandalay and Doktawaddy south of it.

Hmm..actually CHS map seems reasonable to me...

Not really. The Irrawaddy (the river that connect Mandalay with Myitkyina) should be to the north (on the map) of Mandalay. But if the Doktorwaddy was important for the defense of Mandalay, it should be on the map, too.

Well, if you see the screenshot in start of the topic, Doktawaddy *is* on map...west-east river south of Mandalay. Maybe Irrawaddy needs to turn to north of Mandalay, tho...instead of continuing straight to north. But I can live with it.

The Chindwin runs dow from past Imphal, the Irrawaddy from Myitkeina, and the Dotkawaddy from past Lashio (ref. post #3).

It would seem to me that the two rivers as shown on Andrew's map is meant to be the Chindwin and the Irrawaddy. If not, where's the Chindwin gone?
Where's the Any key?
