New Computer => Avoid CTD

Post by TulliusDetritus »

Finally I am going to get rid of my obsolete computer. But I remember some players said -- on these forums -- that they experienced a lot of "crash to desktop" even if their computers were quite powerful (Ferraris compared to mine). I, on the other hand, almost never experienced CTD's.

So, should I be avoiding "something"? Note: I am talking about the motherboard itself, the chipsets thing. After all, I'm in Eurotrashland, the technical specifications could be (?) different here (example: TV here => PAL/SECAM; in America => NTSC). I really don't know, I'm 100% illiterate.

Thanks in advance.

To be honest, I think most CTD are caused by faulty drivers and Codex's. Be careful what programs endup installed on your new computer. Some of them install faulty or incomplete support drivers.

Sam, the problem is: if the 1% was caused by the motherboard thing, this is indeed a potential problem. And I need to know if this may be possible. Thank you anyway [:)]

There's nothing you can do - other than making sure that hardware and OS are set up correctly. No one knows in advance which combination of hardware devices might cause an application to crash, it's trial and error.

A quite expensive trial, VSWG. I understand what are you trying to say though. Thank you. I will keep my fingers crossed. Alea Iacta Est [8D]

P.S.:
at least from now on I will be able to play Rome Total War (incredibly slow now) and Silent Hunter III (impossible to play now).

The "best" way to avoid CTDs is to have absolutely nothing else running on your computer.  No anti-virus software, no firewall, no anti-spyware protection, no CD/DVD hardware drivers, no sound card drivers, no mouse drivers, nothing, nada, zip.  Get rid of it all.  If it shows up in your system tray or anywhere under Task Manager, "They" want you to get rid of it.  'Cause "They" don't have those on "Their" development machines and therefore don't account for them when "They" program.

(And its not just Matrix/2by3.  Every computer game developer on the planet is part of "Them".)
This game does not have a learning curve. It has a learning cliff.

Any bugs I report are always straight stock games.
