A question if you please...

Post by JudgeDredd »

This may be in the manual, and I apologise if it is...if so, then feel free not to answer...I'll get the message! [;)]

I have a unit sitting on defend orders with Aggro, RoF and Casualties all set to max (I WANT to defend that location)...but now comes the time to move the unit...so I want to move it south. So I give it a defend order and place the marker in the village to defend. Godd.

Now the problem. I want to set Aggro, RoF and Casualties to max again to DEFEND the location...however, how does this fair with the unit when it starts to move. My understanding is it will be at max aggro, rof and casualties....however, I need it to get to the new location ASAP, so I should really set the orders to min...but then I would have to change them when my unit gets to the location...which isn't ideal with realistic orders delay.

So...how should I do it. Ideally, I want to tell the unit to defend at new location X, break contact immediately and get their asap...then hold as hard and fast as you can.

So how does the game take care of these requirements? Quite often, you want to specify orders, but have different orders for getting to the new objective...so orders for travelling, and orders for the objective.

I know I could give a withdraw command to the new location, and this would set the aggro to min...but that means I need to give a defend command, in-situ, at the new location...and again, with orders delay that's going to be tough.

Just thinking out loud...help would be appreciated.

Specific actions at various waypoints is on the wishlist.

Don't forget that sometimes when you are interested in going from A to B (and defending aggressively at B) that it is sometimes wise to specify an AVOIDANCE route.

Billy,

If you want to ap[ply different parameters for both the Move and the Defend then you have to give spearate orders. There's no way arounf that. As Mark said being able to specify separate parameters for each waypoint or to sequence orders is on the wish list but it won't be getting done soon.

Hi all,

Why not just use defend with the end of move task back at the new position while calling for min aggro/casualties initially and as the unit closes in on the new position switch back to max settings?? That your AI subordinate plots the move back at min settings and then switches when you manually order max. I've tried this before and it seems to work. BTW, I've always thought that withdraw converts to defend at the new destination. So this should work too. No?? [&:]

Rob.
So we're at war with the Russkies eh?? I suppose we really ought to invade or something. (Lonnnng pause while studying the map)
Hmmmm... big place ain't it??

Both Move and Withdraw will result in a Defend at the end. If you are worried more about the initial parameters of the Move then use a Move task and reissue a Defend once they get there changing the facing etc. A Withdraw will automatically set the aggro to Min for the Move back, it will also leave a blocking force ( if sufficient line units available ) and it will create a separate Defend at the end. So I would recommend it in this case.

BTW  a word on using max aggro for Defend tasks. With aggro set to max your units will tend to engage the enemy at long range. This may or may not be a good thing. If your units have a good effective long range then go for it. But if they are your typical infantry it may be wiser not to do so. This is especially true when they are likely to encounter enemy AFVs wich will normally have superior long range firepower. It would be better to reduce the aggro and therefore reduce the probability of them engaging at long range, where they will be at a disadvantage.

And if you want to create an ambush, then locate your defenders in covered terrain and set their aggro to Min. This will give them the highest probability of holding fire till the enemy is close where they can do them some damage.
