I've heard of the one movie but not the other. Are they complementary movies being released at the same time, are they the same movie edited/translated differently...???

Thanks.

I know they did that with Tora Tora Tora! In that case there was one movie, released simulaneously in both languages and both countries.

Is that how they did it time, or have they actually edited differently to make two distinct movies?

Yes, but I found no mention of the Japanese version of the movie, hence my question. Maybe I just missed it.

AFAIK they are two different movies, with different directors, cast etc. Not just editing

It is two different movies for sure. The casts are necessarily different but I think Clint Eastwood directed both. They were supposed to be released simultaneously originally but the "Japanese" movie got tangled up somehow and will be released a month or two later than "Flags". I sure hope that an English language or at least subtitled version of the Japanese movie makes it to the US. I enjoyed watching the "Yamato" movie and suppose/hope I understood a little of what was happening with the characters from context but was disappointed to find out it's not gonna have either a subtitled or dubbed version for the US.

Completely different movies.  The Japanese one has a lot of the same financers, actors, staff, etc as OTOKOTACHI NO YAMATO.

Im fairly certain there will be no English subtitled version of it.

Also, although "Letters from Iwo Jima" is being marketed as "The Japanese point of view", it is going to be a very sanitized version of their point of view.. Todays Japanese by and large have a very difficult time relating to those events at all and a no holds bar look at that time is extremely difficult and would doom any movie commercially.

Ive lived in Japan now for nearly 11 years (Jan. 16th will by my 11th year anniversery...) and I must say that a disappointing feature of movies made hear about that time period are generally disappointing.  The one exception, and I cant remember the title at the moment, as the movie dealing with the base and surrounding in southern Japan that was the center of the TOKKAI (kamikaze) experience.

No, "Letters from Iwo Jima" will be released in the US with English subtitles.
