Will there be a demo?

Gary Grigsby’s World at War is back with a whole new set of features. World at War: A World Divided still gives complete control over the production, research and military strategy for your side, but in this new updated version you’ll also be able to bring spies into the mix as well as neutral country diplomacy, variable political events and much more. Perhaps the largest item is the ability to play a special Soviet vs. Allies scenario that occurs after the end of World War II.

Will there be a demo?

Post by Missouri_Rebel »

? Looking to see if this game would run better on my system than the first. I tried the demo but there was so much lag that I forgot about it. The funny thing is ALL other wargames run fine, but not WaW.

There's a good chance we'll have a demo put together in the future, but not right away. If WaW did not run well on your system, AWD will unfortunately be no different. They have the same basic requirements. Where was the lag? Was it with the map scroll? WaW and AWD require a decent amount of video memory. If you meet the minimum specs, 32 MB video RAM in a video card, 512 MB RAM, the most important thing to increase the scroll speed is video card RAM.

It was indeed on the map screen. It is rather odd that some of these other games ran fine though, ones with seemingly higher resolution. The system I use for wargaming is a laptop with these specs;
AMD Turion 64 mobile tech ML-30
(1MB L2 Cache. 1.6GHz)
800 MHz, 960 MB RAM
Display:SiS M760GX

Not sure if the processor is 800MHz or 1.6GHz?

BTW...can you change the graphics card in a laptop?
Comp was bought last Christmas

IIRC it was slow when I clicked on units too...taking a second to do so.

I don't see a video card listed and the video memory in that card. Being a laptop you probably have some kind of built in graphics card with limited video memory. WaW/AWD really require a dedicated video card of some kind. I used to play WaW with my built in Intel video card (I think with 32MB of memory), but I do remember it was slow and once I got something better I could never go back.

Last year I bought a laptop for my mom with a built in card (no chance to play WaW/AWD on that, but she didn't play games) and I bought a laptop for myself with a 128MB NVidia card in it which will play just about anything. All laptops are not the same.

I don't know if it is possible to change video cards on a laptop. Maybe someone else can answer that one.

If your a little familiar with BIOS settings you could try increasing the amount of ram that is shared. In a lot of cases these on-board video chips use main system ram to run. You could look for the entry on that in BIOS and try upping the shared to max. Also look for the AGP aparture size setting. Set that to 128MB if you could.
